Welcomefrom the CLPNA President

Welcome to the 2015 CLPNA AGM & Conference, and thank you for joining us in Banff, Alberta at the Rimrock Hotel in the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

Themes for our events are chosen carefully, and this year’s Conference is focused on Authentic Care. Authenticity is a collection of choices we make to show up and be real, allowing courage and innovation to guide us as professionals.

During the next few days we will examine how to develop positive relationships and connect meaningfully with patients and colleagues as we provide compassionate care. This Conference will provide expert speakers, provocative discussion and engagement opportunities with colleagues and healthcare experts. Take time to seek out advice to cultivate courage, compassion and connection that enhances your practice. Get real by sharing experiences, knowledge and insight with your colleagues, as we are truly stronger when we nurture and rely on each other.

We are so pleased you are here with us. I hope you engage, learn and network to challenge your practice. I am confident you will enjoy the many forums and expert speakers sharing new perspectives and information to make a difference in your authentic journey in nursing.

May this event lead you through the process of ‘Getting Real’, finding your path to Authentic Care!

Sincerely,Jo-Anne Macdonald-Watson

Trauma-Informed Care WILDROSE BALLROOM

Vicki Enns, Trainer and Clinical Director, Critical Trauma Resource Institute Working with people inevitably means working with the impact of psychological trauma. Due to the pervasive nature of trauma, it is essential that all health professionals have an understanding of the links between trauma and a person’s mental and physical health, ways of interacting with others and compulsive coping behaviours. Working from a trauma-informed perspective creates the necessary foundation of an organizational culture that protects health professionals from burnout and vicarious trauma, promotes the safety and health of patients and allows the possibility of growth and transformation of trauma into greater mental, physical and relational health.

How Social Media Impacts Healthcare Beyond the Ease of Online Sharing Jesse Miller, Consultant and Educator, Mediated Reality/Miller Consulting Services Inc.

In our shared work environments, we have to be prepared for the role that social media plays in transferring personal and non-workplace related information with the ease of a mouse click or tap of a mobile device. Your healthcare facility most likely has a social media marketing plan to engage patients and you may have experience with social media use in your private life, but we also now need to consider how social media engagement affects dynamics in the healthcare profession between employers, staff, colleagues, patients and caregivers. This session will focus on social media use within the workplace and how social media is reshaping traditional workplace relationships, hiring and office communication with staff and patients. The session will also focus on the options available for the healthcare professional and how to provide balance as social media use develops within your care settings. Bring your smartphones or tablets to participate in interactive social media education!

8:45 - 9:45 am Daring to Care: Culture, Power and Privilege in the WILDROSE BALLROOM

Human Health Experience Scott Harrison, Director, Urban Health and HIV/AIDS, St. Paul’s Hospital, Providence Health Care

This plenary session provides participants with a safe space in which to explore how privilege and power are enacted in health care settings. To deliver truly inclusive and culturally safe care, health care leaders and providers require support and reflection on their own experiences, in order to understand how relational practice can be fostered for the benefit of patients, staff and leaders. Understanding fundamental principles about how we behave, interact and what we believe is essential in moving health care forward to a person-centred approach. The session will provide participants with an understanding of how we are socialized to ‘other’ people and how systems work to benefit some and not others; how power and privilege are experienced and enacted in health care encounters; and what health care professionals can do to ameliorate the effects of marginalization.

Educational Tools to Improve Clinical Practice Using Patient and Family-Centred Practice Tools to Improve LPN Proficiency, Accountability and Clinical Best Practice Robert Cooper, Alberta Health Services

Preceptor experience suggests that an increase in clinical practicum hours would lead to improvements in student experience and efficiency. With the public and regulatory emphasis on competency and adherence to the standards of acceptable practice, it’s more important than ever to ensure that nursing care focuses on patient-centred relationships and promotes positive outcomes. This presentation will share experiences from the implementation of a successful care model emphasizing patient centred practice and positive nurse/patient relationships at the Foothills Medical Centre. By using these tools for authentic practice, student experiences are enhanced, practice accountability and proficiency increase, and public confidence and positive outcomes are fostered.

Assessment and Debriefing Tools for Simulation in Healthcare Sharron Burns, Columbia College

Columbia College identified a need to offer Practical Nursing students the opportunity to increase their confidence, competence, skill and theory integration prior to beginning acute care clinical placements. A 5 week clinical preparation workshop pilot was designed, implemented and delivered to a group of learners via scenarios using low to medium fidelity simulation methods. Following from the success of the pilot workshop, a second simulation workshop was designed along with a tool to support facilitators in the complex art of debriefing simulation. This presentation will describe the design and implementation of the tool, focusing on the impact it has made on the techniques facilitators use to manage and maintain best practice while delivering clinical simulation in a lab setting.

Staying Real: WILDROSE BALLROOM B

Keeping Nurses Healthy

Are Your Feet Working for You? Karen Hardy, Primary Care Network Edmonton North

Christiane Rawlins, Primary Care Network Edmonton North

This presentation will describe recent experiences of the Edmonton North Primary Care Network nursing team in presenting foot care information and education to health care professionals working in a long term care setting. Information shared will include education on foot problems such as: high/low arches; dry cracked skin; sore and tired feet; toe deformities; and calluses and corns: all are everyday problems encountered by healthcare providers. We will discuss how to recognize and prevent some of these common foot problems and will demonstrate how you can help yourself and others to ensure that your feet continue to work for you.

Preventing Vicarious Trauma: Beyond Burnout and Compassion Fatigue Daniel Doherty, Christiana Health Care Systems

It is important to maintain authentic practice in nursing, however, there are significant effects associated with the providing patient care including burnout and compassion fatigue, as well as vicarious trauma. While there are rewards in nursing, it is important to examine the challenge of separating work from one’s personal life. This presentation was developed to build a mechanism for proactive coping by creating awareness of burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma as an occupational hazard and how this affects the nurses’ connectedness to others. The presentation will provide specific strategies for health promotion behaviors and resiliency and will offer techniques for putting these insights into practice to decrease or minimize the effect of working with the sick, dying and/or critically ill patients and families.

Respecting the Real: WILDROSE BALLROOM C

Supporting Inclusive, Responsive Nursing Practice

Diversity Mohamed Abazinab, Carewest

Cultural diversity is increasing within our facilities. One of our key organizational values is to have a ‘whole-person’ approach to care. This means not just looking at physical needs of our clients, but understanding who they are as individuals and respecting their cultures. This extends from our clients to all staff, families and volunteers so that we are each authentic in who we are. By understanding cultural diversity, we can create a healthier environment and stronger relationships. To better understand diversity, we are investing in staff education.

Behavioural Supports Alberta: Supporting the Management of Responsive Behaviours through a Grassroots Approach Lynne Moulton, Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Zone, Continuing Care

Challenging responsive behaviours (RBs) such as aggression, wandering, and social inappropriateness exhibited by persons with neurological, mental health and addictions, or developmental disorders are of increasing concern. They can cause distress or catastrophic outcomes for the person exhibiting the behaviours, family members, others in care, caregivers, and healthcare providers, and result in extensive resource utilization. Behavioural Supports Alberta (BSA) is a unique, grassroots provincial initiative aimed at enhancing networking, collaboration and research among healthcare providers, decision-makers, researchers, and caregivers across government ministries and service-provider agencies. It connects resources and people from across sectors, silos, agencies, institutions and provinces to build upon existing resources and support solution-finding in the management of RBs. This presentation will share tools for managing RBs in patients across the lifespan in order to minimize costs, support maximal resource utilization and enrich care delivery in a way that respects the needs of our patients.

Supporting our Patients, Supporting Ourselves WILDROSE BALLROOM A

Connecting Meaningfully with Your Patient with Mental Illness Elizabeth Anderson, Author, Being Mentally Healthy

The process of navigating mental illness can be challenging. What if there was a recipe for success for people to recover and a road map for nurses to connect meaningfully with their patients? Based on her own experiences, Elizabeth has developed a recipe for success to help people flourish while living with mental illness. Armed with the recipe, the recovery journey can be analyzed to identify strengths and current challenges with patients, and this recipe can be applied to any chronic illness. In this presentation, Elizabeth will share her story, her recipe for success, and tips for how nurses and other clinicians can understand the patient experience and help with their journey to recovery.

Recognizing the Importance of Caregivers Debra Paches, Caregiver Navigator Coordinator, Alberta Caregivers Association

One in four Albertans is a caregiver, providing unpaid care for a friend/loved one living with illness, disability or age related challenges. Caregivers provide 80-90% of care in the community and statistics have shown that there can be negative physiologic, psychological, social and financial impacts to caregivers. In order to sustain caregivers in the community and the care that they provide, it is vitally important that health care professionals (care providers) recognize, assess and support the caregivers they meet in their practice. This presentation will share information on the community resources and supports available to support caregivers – many of whom are themselves providers of care – so that they are able to attend to their own needs, develop and practice self-care, and therefore be better caregivers to their loved ones.

in patient care. The principles of empathy, self-awareness, and leading by example are key components of authentic leadership and are critical success factors in making a difference towards improving the patient experience and quality of care within the context of patient-centered care (also referred to as person-centered care). This presentation will provide LPNs with information on how they can apply concepts from authentic leadership theory into front line practice to deliver patient centered care.

Building the Bridge to the Medical Home: The Impact of LPN Evolution in Primary Care Lindsay Azure-Allan, Fort Saskatchewan Medical Clinic

Jenni Hartt, Alberta Heartland Primary Care Network

Graham Kitson, Alberta Heartland Primary Care Network

Kristine Osbaldeston, Alberta Heartland Primary Care Network

The Resource in Clinic (RIC) Pilot Program, launched in 2014, is based on the premise that when a family physician has direct one-on-one assistance from a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) working in an interdisciplinary team model, it will increase physician efficiency, thereby improving access for existing patients or allowing the physician to take on new unattached patients; increase clinical productivity; and facilitate better panel management within the clinic. Working within an integrated care delivery team under the direction of a physician and within their defined scope of practice, the LPNs working in the RIC program are able to positively impact patient health through the use of evidence-based preventative health promotion strategies. This presentation will showcase the direct impact of the patient-LPN-physician partnership and highlight future implications for rural communities using direct feedback from LPNs and physicians involved in the program.

Keeping it Real: WILDROSE BALLROOM C

Maintaining Authenticity in the Nursing Profession

Why Do We Do What We Do? Kimberly Hogarth, Bow Valley College

Abbie Kranz, Bow Valley College

This empowering session will focus on how observations made in nursing care relate to decision making at the bedside and how this leads to improvements in systematic health care delivery. Looking at various case studies within health care, this presentation will highlight how nurses have paved the way for better patient outcomes. Upon completing the session, participants will be able identify the importance of the question “why do I do what I do.”

Workplace Bullying in Nursing: The Antithesis of Caring Lisa Adams, MacEwan University

It is ironic how the premise of caring that initially strengthened the nursing profession is now threatened with annihilation. As the onus to provide caring behaviours lays with individual nurses in the extent to which they perform their nursing responsibilities in a caring manner, nurses still face many challenges of increased patient acuity, heavy workloads, staff shortages and repeated organizational structure changes. Workplace bullying is one behavior that has grown in recent years in nursing. Workplace bullying results in both physical and mental consequences for those involved: its effects are like a cancer and can permeate every corner of a nurse’s life, mental health and overall well-being. While it prompts many to question the underpinning of caring in nursing, its triggers, presentation, symptomology and adverse effects insidiously destroy nurses and jeopardize patient care. Identifying workplace bullying, increasing awareness about it and dealing with it are all crucial if the profession and integrity of nursing is to survive.
