A/Prof Alex Hunyor MBBS (Hons), FRANZCO, FRACS Alex Hunyor is an Associate Professor and member of the Macular Research Group at the Save Sight Institute, University of Sydney. He is involved in numerous clinical trials for treatment of retinal diseases and is one of the principal investigators in the Australian Macular Hole Study and the Fight Retinal Blindness project. Alex is a Director on the Board of the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists. He is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists, Oceania
Retina Association, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS). He is the Australian international delegate to the ASRS. Alex is an examiner for the RANZCO Advanced Clinical Examinations, and is involved in teaching of local ophthalmic trainees and ophthalmologists as well as participating in education of overseas specialists. He is the Chair of the RANZCO Medicare Advisory Committee, and is a member of the Principles and Rules Committee of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) Review.
Scott Chapman Partner, TressCox Lawyers Scott Chapman has over 24 years’ experience in Health Law, advising a number of major health institutions, including MDA National Insurance Pty Ltd, Avant Mutual Group Ltd, the Australian Medical Association (NSW) Limited, the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. Scott’s expertise and experience includes negotiations with government health
departments, professional conduct and administrative law matters, risk management, business structures and governance, corporatisation of medical practices and advising clients with respect to legislative interpretation and amendment, Coronial Inquests, Medicare investigations, policy advice, and corporate and commercial advice. Scott also advises clients in relation to Hospital based investigations including issues relating to bullying and harassment, clinical privileges, systems issues and employment disputes and has significant experience representing VMOs in relation to their contracts and disputes with Local Health Districts. Scott was actively involved in the drafting of significant amendments to the Medical Practice Act, the Health Care Complaints Act, the Health Administration Act and the Health Services Act following the recommendations of the Walker Special Commission of Inquiry and subsequent legislative reviews. Scott was selected for inclusion in the 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014/15 and 2016 edition of Best Lawyers®: Australia for Health & Aged Care. In 2013 he was also selected as Lawyer of the Year for Health & Aged Care - Sydney.
Dr William Glasson AO MBBS, FRANZCO, FRACS, FRCOphth, FRACGP (hons), DIP AppSc(Qph) Dr William Glasson graduated from the University of Queensland in 1980 and completed his residency at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Mater Hospital. After completing his ophthalmic training in Brisbane he undertook postgraduate training in London in the area of ocular oncology as well as working in the area of lid and lacrimal pathology.
Dr Glasson currently practices at the Terrace Eye Centre in Brisbane and is a consultant ophthalmologist at the Mater Public Hospital and Longreach Base Hospital. Dr Glasson is a past President of the Australian Medical Association and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. He is a consultant ophthalmologist to the Australian Army and holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Dr Glasson provides outreach ophthalmic services to Longreach, Winton, Barcaldine and Blackall in Western Queensland as well as Katherine in the Northern Territory. Bill is also involved in providing ongoing ophthalmic services to East Timor.
Michael Roff CEO, Australian Private Hospitals Association Michael Roff is the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Private Hospitals Association (APHA). Michael joined APHA as Public Affairs Manager in 1994 and was appointed CEO in 2000. Prior to joining APHA, Michael worked as an assistant to a Justice of the High Court and as a Policy Advisor to Ministers in the New South Wales and ACT Governments.
He also spent several years in Sydney as a public affairs manager with a major national industry association. APHA is the peak national body representing the interests of the private hospital sector, with a diverse membership that includes large and small hospitals and day surgeries, for profit and not for profit hospitals, groups as well as independent facilities, located in metropolitan, regional and rural areas throughout Australia. For more than ten years, Michael has also served on the Board of the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards in addition to holding appointments on a wide range of government and industry advisory bodies
Simon Conolly Manager, Strategic Advice, Perpetual Private Simon Conolly is Manager, Strategic Advice at Perpetual Private, one of Australia’s most experienced wealth management and trustee groups. Simon is responsible for the provision of complex taxation and superannuation advice to Perpetual’s high net worth clients and their professional advisers. He also has specialist knowledge in asset protection, succession planning and estate planning.
He has over seventeen years’ experience in the financial services industry. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce, an Advanced Diploma of Financial Planning, and is an SMSF Specialist AdvisorTM accredited by the SMSF Association.
The Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care Ken Wyatt was elected in 2010 as the Federal Member for Hasluck, an electorate South East of Perth, making history as the first Indigenous Member of the House of Representatives. In September 2013 Ken became the first Member for Hasluck re-elected for a second term. Since his election to Parliament in 2010, Ken has worked tirelessly to be a strong advocate for his electorate and to help build a stronger local community. In 2015 Ken again made history as the first Indigenous member of the Federal
Executive after being sworn in as the Assistant Minister for Health. Ken is responsible for Aged Care service delivery and implementation, as well as for Dementia. Before entering politics Ken worked in community roles in the fields of Health and Education including the District Director for the Swan Education District, Director of Aboriginal Health in New South Wales and Western Australia. Not only has Ken had an extensive career in health and education, he has also made an enormous contribution to the wider community in training and mentoring young people. This was recognised in 1996 when Ken was awarded the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Later, in 2000, Ken was awarded a Centenary of Federation Medal for ‘his efforts and contribution to improving the quality of life for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and mainstream Australian society in education and health.” Ken brings his knowledge in the areas of Health and Education to his role as Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, as well as a lifetime of experiences in raising a family and being part of the local Perth community.
Dr Tim Henderson MbChB, BSc (Anat), FRCOphth, FRANZCO Eye Specialist & Director of Ophthalmology, Alice Springs Hospital Dr Tim Henderson grew up in central Africa, moved to the UK in his teens and did his medical training at Leicester University Medical School. He began his eye specialist training in the UK at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 1990. He moved to the Yorkshire ophthalmology training rotation for specialist registrar training and completed a corneal research fellowship with Professor Coster in
Adelaide in 1998. Returning to the UK he worked as an NHS consultant ophthalmologist at The Centre for Advanced Eye Surgery in Wakefield before taking on the challenge of Director of the eye department at Alice Springs Hospital in July 2000. Dr Henderson visits numerous remote communities each year on a specialist outreach program. He is a Senior Lecturer in ophthalmology with the NT Clinical School, Flinders University and supervises the accredited training eye registrars during their placement as part of the South Australian ophthalmology training program. He was awarded one of the inaugural RANZCO supervisors training awards in 2006 and has received a number of other awards since.
