WELCOME TO QUAKESUMMIT 2010, THE NEES & PEER ANNUAL MEETING!
We are pleased to announce that interest and participation in the 2010 annual meeting has been exceptionally popular--so much so that we have had to find a larger meeting space to accommodate attendees in the technical sessions on October 8-9. NEES will still host two days of pre-conference activities October 6-7 at the Marriott Union Square and PEER will still host the Young Researcher Session on October 7 there as well.
However, the technical sessions for the annual meeting on October 8-9 have moved to larger conference rooms provided by the Marriott Marquis. The short walk should be pleasant this time of the year and the area safe for pedestrians. Thank you for joining us; we are confident you will find the session topics of particular interest!

NEEScomm created this competition to promote photos and videos that highlight the innovative research and facilities that characterize the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation.
Contributors to the 2010 Media Competition participated in two categories: Photo and Video. Photo submissions feature an image based on its subject interest, photographic, artistic, and compositional quality. Video submissions clearly and succinctly convey a research outcome, or highlight an activity or facility. Topics for the categories included:
Photo:• Specimen Construction – Researchers and staff constructing and instrumenting research specimens • Testing — A completed specimen pictured during the testing sequence • Failure – Structural, geotechnical, or system failure as a consequence of testing• Photo Favorite – A favorite photo of the contributor’s choosing

NEEShub Lunch Session
On Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8-9, stop by Golden Gate A between 12:45-1:45 p.m. and explore the NEEShub with NEEScomm IT specialists (lunch provided). Friday’s lunch session will focus on “NEEShub ABCs”, which includes the Data Model, Project Warehouse, Project Display, PEN, and Groups/SynchroNEES.
Saturday’s lunch session will cover NEEShub tools in two 30-minute segments. The first 30 minutes will provide general information about using NEEShub tools and the second 30 minutes will provide technical information about contributing NEEShub tools.
Concrete Column Blind Prediction Contest 2010 PEER and NEES held a blind prediction contest for a full-scale reinforced concrete bridge column which was tested on the NEES Large High-Performance Outdoor Shake Table located at UCSD’s Englekirk Structural EngineeringCenter. The bridge column was subjected to increasing intensity of uniaxial earthquake ground motions in September, 2010.
The contest was open to teams from both the practicing structural engineering community and the academicresearch community. One winning submission from each community (academic research and practicing engineering) is being recognized and awarded. The prediction contest was “blind” and compared analytical response “predictions” with those measured during experimental testing. Because the actual loading was determined during the course of the testing based on observed response, the contest featured two parts: pre-test analysis and prediction based on anticipated earthquake loadings, and post-test analysis and prediction using the actual loadings from the experimental test. The analytical column model for the post-test analysis had to be identical with that for the pre-test analysis. The closest predictions to the test results won, based on the posted rules.
The winners for each category will be recognized at Quake Summit 2010. Join us Saturday, October 9, from8:30-9:00 a.m. for the Blind Prediction Contest Awards and Winning Model Presentations in Golden Gate B.
