Welcome Welcome to a new year in Girl Scouts! We are looking forward to all the exciting adventures that girls will take this year in Girl Scouts. Please be sure to check out all the details in this program calendar. There are many events offered to give girls a variety of experiences. Plus we work hard to make events affordable. It is important to make sure to include your girls in the decision making and plans for your troop. We also encourage troops to participate in the product programs. There are many skills that girls gain by participating in the Fall Product and Cookie Programs such as goal setting, entrepreneurial skills, mon-ey management and more. And by participating in product programs, your troop can earn funds to help pay for the great programs offered in this calendar. We would like to welcome Rachel Ray to our Metro staff. Rachel will be handling all program and train-ing registrations for Metro. You can reach Rachel at [email protected] or at 636-0900 x 20000. When you come to visit the Metro Service Center, Rachel will be at the first desk as you enter. Again this year, we plan to mail the Metro Media newsletter to all 01 troop leaders, service unit manag-ers and Juliettes. This is made affordable by ad sales from area vendors who support Girl Scouting. If you are not a troop leader, service unit manager or Juliette, you can still purchase a subscription for $10.00 for the troop year for your newsletter to be mailed to your home. The Metro Media includes upcoming program events for girls, important product program details, upcoming trainings for lead-ers, family and community partnership details and council news. For any information about the Metro Media, including purchasing a subscription, contact Brady DeLu-ca ([email protected] 636-0900 x 21900). THANKS much for all you do as a leader to provide the girls a great experience! Enjoy a wonderful year! Special thanks to Brady DeLuca and Jennifer Court for all their work planning this program cal-endar. Council-Sponsored Product Programs The Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana provides two program opportunities for troops and Juliettes to earn needed funds for activities. Girls who participate in these programs learn important skills to help them face real life challenges. These learned skills are lessons money can’t buy. Fall Product Program

The Fall Product Program is held during the months of October and November. It is a multi-part program meant to involve friends and families only. Step 1 is the Nut & Candy sale through Ashdon Farms. Step 2 is address booklets and Step 3 is the sale of magazine sub-scriptions, books and CDs through QSP.

Leadership learning is built into the Cookie Program with experienc-es designed for each grade level of Girl Scouting. Girls learn skills, not from a book, but from real-life experiences; skills that will last long after the Cookie Program ends.

GOAL SETTING

DECISION MAKING

MONEY MANAGEMENT

PEOPLE SKILLS

BUSINESS ETHICS

Why do they matter? Because when your Girl Scout has learned these skills, she’ll be poised for success in her career.

Think about it: When employers interview job candidates, they all look for the same things. This is true whether the employer is a bank, high-tech company, university, hospital, publishing house, car dealership, accounting firm, or even the local pet store! They want:

Someone who can set goals and meet deadlines. Blowing a deadline can mean blowing a deal!

Someone who works well with others. Who wants to deal with strife and complaining in the workplace? Not the boss! Someone who understands customers. It doesn’t matter whether the “customers” are hospital patients, TV viewers, or other

companies—every business has to know its customers and what they want. Someone who can influence others. This doesn’t just mean selling a product. Employers want people who can sell ideas, pitch

projects and convince other employees to help out. OR sell ideas, pitch projects

and make deals.

Someone who is honest, trustworthy and reliable. Kind of goes without saying—or it should!

Sound like anyone you know? That’s your Girl Scout, using the 5 Skills she learned in the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

Policies: • Troops, groups and individual Girl Scouts can sign up for any program provided they meet the grade level

requirement. Girls who are not currently registered Girl Scouts may attend our programs by paying the $12 membership fee in addition to any program costs. A completed Girl Scout registration form should accom-pany the program registration form in these cases.

• Girls bridging to the next grade level can participate in programs for their next level to satisfy bridging re-quirements.

• Programs fill up quickly, so please register early. Advance registration is required for all programs and events. Money will not be accepted at the door. Be sure to include “Free” adults on your form.

• Registration will close two weeks before the event date unless otherwise noted.

• We will send a confirmation after we receive your registration. If the program is full, you will be notified and either offered an alternate event date, or issued a refund.

• Please register for events responsibly. Capacity is limited for all events, so please be mindful that your re-served space may take an opportunity away from someone else.

• Only the number of persons accounted for on your registration form - girls and adults -will be allowed to attend a program. Space, staffing and materials are all prepared in advance for the number of people regis-tered. If you bring additional people, they will be asked to wait outside the event.

General Information: • Please check Volunteer Essentials (VE) and Safety Activity Checkpoints (SAC) for the correct girl/adult rati-

os for your grade level. Leaders are responsible for maintaining the correct girl/adult ratios and meeting other VE/SAC guidelines. Please make sure you have your girls’ health records with you when you attend a program. Seniors and Ambassadors may attend events without a chaperone, but must bring a completed health history and permission form with them.

• Adults are to serve as leaders/chaperones, not as participants at events and programs.

• In the event of inclement weather, a decision to hold or cancel an event will be made at least two hours be-fore the scheduled start time. Your troop will be notified by phone if a program is to be cancelled. You may also check the websites of local television stations for cancellations.

• All adults chaperoning overnight events must be registered as a Girl Scout member and have a completed volunteer application on file at the Metro Service Center office.

Refund Policy: Refunds will be issued if a program is cancelled, or in the event of an illness or family emergency only. All refund requests must be submitted in advance. There are no refunds for “no shows.” In the event of weather related cancellations—troops will be offered the reschedule date before a refund will be issued. If the program/event takes place and your troop decides not to attend - no refund will be issued.

Tagalongs: Please plan to make other arrangements for tagalongs. Tagalongs are any child under 18 not the designated age for the event (infants, toddlers, older or younger siblings - including Girl Scouts - are all considered tagalongs.) Tagalongs are not permitted at most Girl Scout programs, and adults who bring them will be asked to remain outside the program.

Financial Aid: Limited financial aid is available for Service Center and Council events. One completed financial aid form per person should be turned in with the event registration form. We ask participants to pay what they can toward the event fee. Confirmation will be sent if financial aid is granted. If financial aid is given for an event and the person “no shows” for that event, that person/parent will be expected to repay the amount of the financial aid within 30 days.

Introducing the new Journey It’s Your Story...Tell It

Daisy: 5 Flowers, 4 Stories, 3 Cheers for Animals! As Daisies enjoy a fictional story about the flower friends, they learn just how much they can care for animals and for themselves—and just how confident that makes them feel.

Ambassadors: BLISS: Live It! Give It! In BLISS: Live It! Give It!, Ambassadors dream big, now and for the future, and assist others in dreaming big, too. They explore their values, strengths, and passions as a way to open doors to wonderful, new adventures. Designed as a flip book, BLISS: Live It! inspires girls to pursue their dreams while BLISS: Give It! encourages girls to assist others in pursuing theirs.

Brownie: A World of Girls This flip book devotes one side to fictional stories that take the Brownie friends characters to diverse places in the world. The other side has real-life Brownies exploring their World of Girls closer to home. Through the journey’s many adven-tures, anecdotes, and activities, the Brownies have fun learning that stories con-tain clues they can use to make the world better. And that strengthens their con-fidence.

Junior: aMUSE In aMUSE, Juniors gain an understanding of just how limitless their potential can be as they try on a range of roles—real and creative—that the world offers. In doing so, they learn about people and the power of real-life action and leadership.

Cadette: MEdia Cadettes put the me in MEdia as this journey encourages them to explore the great, big multimedia world around them and then remake media to better match the reali-ty they know. Along the way, Cadettes become aware of the value of media, its limi-tations and its power, and the power they have to lead and inspire others.

Senior: MISSION: SISTERHOOD! In MISSION: SISTERHOOD! Seniors widen their networks and ignite the energy of sisterhood to create real change in the world. As Seniors expand their friendship borders, they boost their own confidence and make the most of their leadership skills.

Wicked Juniors & Up Back by “Popular” demand. Entertainment Weekly calls WICKED "the best musical of the decade,” and when it first played Louisville, it broke box office records and sold out in record time. Winner of 35 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, WICKED is Broadway’s biggest blockbuster, a cultural phenomenon and was just named “the defining musical of the decade" by The New York Times. Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One born with emerald green skin - is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for "the most complete and completely satisfying new musical in a long time" (USA Today). GS Cadette Media Journey Series Cadettes Would you like to complete the MEdia Journey with a group of your fellow Girl Scout Cadettes? If so, then this is the series for you. We will complete all of the requirements of the journey in this series. All you have to do is register and participate in the journey sessions. While some of this series will be preplanned, there will be numerous opportunities for girl led, learn by doing, and cooperative learning. We will kick off the MEdia series with an overnighter at the PLC in September where we will explore online safety, monitor our media sources, and take a look into advertising - how companies tailor their ads to a target audience and how consumers react to those ads. Then on Sunday afternoons, we will break down the different MEdia sources and determine their influence on us and our influence on them. These afternoons may also include some field trips to area MEdia resources. In January, we will hold our influence overnighter and explore the ways that the MEdia influences how we see ourselves and others. We will also explore ways to have a voice to enhance the way that the MEdia approaches us. Then in February, we will review our new MEdia know-how and cultivate our individual mission statements and celebrate the completion of our Journey. The cost of this series is $20 and will include your GS Cadette MEdia journey book, the awards set, and materials.
