Dear Students, Teachers, Parents and Colleagues, It is my great privilege to welcome you to the 56th annual Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) of Southeast Michigan. We have a group of very talented young men and women from schools in southeast Michigan (and Indiana) who will share their research with us. I would like to thank the teachers and mentors for the guidance they provided students throughout the research process and their parents for the support that such activities entail. An event such as this one cannot be accomplished by one person alone and I would like to express my gratitude to those who help make this event possible every year: the members of the Advisory Board, judges, speakers, and the administration of the College of Education at Wayne State University. A special thanks to Ms. Saundra Sumner, Ms. Joyce Martin, Mrs. Karuna Arora, and Ms. Marion Tate for their help in the planning and running of the symposium, and special appreciation for the JSHS partnerships with the MI Sea Grant Extension, the COE Upward Bound Program, and the U.S. Army CCDC GVSC. I would like to take this opportunity to give you a short overview of the history of this wonderful program. The JSHS was established in 1958 by the U. S. Army Research Office. In 1995 the Office of Naval Research and in 1997 the U. S. Air Force joined the army in funding the symposium. Since 2018, the National Science Teachers Association has administered the funds and organized the National Symposium. The primary aim of the JSHS is to promote research among high school students. Each year, more than 10,000 students and their teachers participate in forty-eight regional symposia held on university campuses across the country and in Puerto Rico and the Department of Defense schools in Europe and the Pacific. Students presenting at the regional symposia have the opportunity to receive significant awards in the form of scholarships, payable to the university of their choice. The first, second, and third student finalists at each of the regional symposium receive $2000, $1500, and $1000 respectively, and all five finalists are invited to attend the National JSHS free of charge. The two finalists from each regional symposium also present their research at the National JSHS where they have the opportunity to receive additional awards. The three finalists in each of the categories at the National JSHS receive $12,000.00, $8,000.00 and $4,000.00 respectively in scholarships. For additional information about the JSHS please visit: http://coe.wayne.edu/ted/science/jshs/

Thank you for participating in this year’s symposium. I hope your experience is a memorable one. Sandra Yarema, Director Southeast MI Regional JSHS

Where is He Now?

Ajay Arora is currently a freshman [sophomore standing] at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), earning a Bachelors in Science in Computer Science and Management Sciences with a minor in Public Policy. He was a JSHS Finalist in 2016 and 2018. Ajay has been doing research for over 5 years; most recently, he has been doing research as an extern at Massachusetts General Hospital in the Center for Systems Biology, with Dr. Miles Miller of Harvard Medical School.

During his time at MIT, Ajay has immersed himself in the entrepreneurship scene in the greater Boston area. As part of a team, he recently received funding from the MIT Hacking Medicine group and Leo Science and Tech Hub for a project that streamlines the biopsy consent process in dermatology clinics and saves the 20% of a visit normally reserved for administrative burden. He is also a part of an 8-member project at MIT to create and implement a new education platform that improves the sharing of knowledge among students and with teaching assistants. Some of his other entrepreneurial interests and projects have spanned across freelancing platforms to hire college students, public policy for marginalized communities, and media and entertainment recommendation systems.

Ajay's goal is to combine tech, social, and creative entrepreneurship towards specialized approaches to learn from the data around us and inform decision making/creation.

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Douglas Hudgins is the Program Scientist for NASA’s Exoplanet Exploration Program in the Astrophysics Division at NASA Headquarters. In that role, he is the principal architects of NASA’s multifaceted program to search out and characterize planets in orbit around other stars (i.e. exoplanets). He previously served as Program Scientist for NASA’s Kepler mission—the agency’s first mission dedicated to exoplanet exploration—and currently holds the same role for the Kepler’s successor, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Dr. Hudgins also oversees a portfolio of technology development projects that will pave the way to future, even more ambitious exoplanet missions. Dr. Hudgins was born and raised in Wyandotte, Michigan, where he graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1981. After graduation, Dr. Hudgins moved to Adrian College in Adrian, MI, where he earned Bachelor of Science Degrees in both Chemistry and Physics in 1986. From Adrian, Dr. Hudgins moved to Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where he earned a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry in 1990. Dr. Hudgins started his NASA career in 1991 at NASA Ames Research Center where he led a successful laboratory research program that, among other accomplishments, established the foundation for our current understanding of the nature of carbon-rich dust in space. In 2005, Dr. Hudgins moved to NASA Headquarters where he served as NASA’s Program Scientist for the Spitzer Space Telescope and ESA’s Herschel Space Observatory before being appointed to his current position in 2009. Doug’s interest in space and Astronomy was sparked at an early age, sitting with his grandmother on clear summer evenings while she pointed out constellations. By his teens, he was building his own telescopes and dragging his father all over the Midwest looking for dark skies under which to use them. These experiences fueled the life-long love of the night sky that fuels his passion for NASA’s mission to explore the universe around us. Today, he lives in central Pennsylvania with his wife of 33 years, a variable array of young adult children, 4 dogs, 2 guinea pigs, and 2 finches.

Campus Tour

College of Engineering

On Friday afternoon, students and guests will experience tours in the college of engineering.

With standout interdisciplinary research in areas such as bioengineering, nanotechnology, and alternative energy technology, the college is poised to provide leadership in emerging growth areas that will shape our future. To accommodate its mission and these and other burgeoning growth areas, the college opened the $3 million Marvin I. Danto Engineering Development Center in 2009.

These state-of-the-art facilities, combined with cutting-edge research and strong academics, have allowed the college to become a key player in Michigan's transition from a manufacturing economy to a strong, effective and diversified high tech global marketplace. The interdisciplinary nature of our programs have also enabled our students to find the skills and experience attained at the college valuable for many different career paths, whether they are in engineering or not. The imagination, precision, and problem-solving skills that make great engineers also prepare them for successful careers in fields such as law, investment banking, teaching, and technical writing.

JSHS participants will visit Dr. Kamran Avanaki’s Biomedical Engineering Laboratory in the Bioengineering building, and Dr. Gregory Auner’s Smart Sensors and Integrated Microsystems Laboratories, located in the Engineering Development Center.
