Program Overview

The College of Business at ECU, we have grown along with the university – from a small Department of Commerce in 1936 to a multi-faceted, modern College of Business serving more than 5,000 students each semester. Yet for over 70 years one thing has not changed: we are highly committed to serving our students as an educational institution of excellence – preparing future leaders with a strong foundation of knowledge, skills, and individual support.

Our accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) proves this commitment – signifying our tradition of superior standards since 1967. The AACSB is the world's most prestigious accreditor of business school programs; its endorsement underlines our exceptional quality while also signaling a hallmark of excellence recognized worldwide.

Our faculty offer excellent preparation for careers in business – with departments in accounting, finance, management, management information systems, and marketing and supply chain management.

Program organization:

All undergraduate students in the college receive a BSBA degree in Business Administration. Forty-five of the 63 total hours in the business program are common to all business students. These common courses are called the Business Core. Students will each choose a concentration area among one of five departments. They will take 18 hours in this concentration.

Accounting

The Department of Accounting offers two tracks for preparation for a career in accounting. The 5 year combination BSA and MSA degree satisfies the North Carolina CPA examination board's requirements for practicing accounting. This program is directed towards students who wish to purse a career in public accounting. The second track offers a BSBA degree that prepares students for corporate, governmental, and internal accounting positions.

Finance

The Department develops applied and theoretical knowledge as the basis for successful financial management of organizations and for providing financial services to both individuals and financial institutions. The department offers concentrations in Financial Services and Managerial Finance.

Management The BSBA in management offers students the opportunity to acquire knowledge in the management of human and physical resources and to acquire skills useful in the management of domestic and international organizations. The department also offers concentrations in Entrepreneurship and Small business Management and International Business. Marketing Marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating, and delivering value to customers, and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders. The marketing department offers a concentration in Electronic Commerce. MIS/OM

The MISOM department offers two concentrations. The Management Information Systems concentration combines business skills with Information Technology (IT) skills. MIS graduates are rooted in a strong business curriculum that is complimented by courses which focus on utilizing and creating information systems.

The second concentration is in Operations and Supply Chain Management. OSCM is the identification, acquisition, positioning and management of resources that an organization needs in the attainment of its objectives.

Administrative Goal Retention of Quality students showing interest in the College of Business

a. Discussion: In fall 2006 the College of Business began admitting freshman students directly into the college. This provides our faculty and advising staff a opportunity to work on retaining the best of these students in the college. It is not our intention to retain students who do show an aptitude or interest in at least one of our disciplines. However, we want every interested, capable student to succeed.

b. Activities: The college has expended substantial resources in an attempt to increase retention. These activities include

1. Leadership Program: while we expect this program to have many benefits; one likely benefit will be to encourage students to stay in business. One reason is that the program puts the student in interesting, engaging classes as freshman and juniors

2. Integration of advising, career services and the communication center into a center for student success

3. New Programs: A number of new programs designed to increase student involvement in the college have been initiated.

C. Assessment Plan: Statistics will be collected on the number of students who remain business students over time. We will review the retention of student prior to the changes to establish a baseline. We will then compare retention each year to this baseline to see if retention changes as new programs get introduced.
