PRESENTERS

Jayarajan Kodikannath, BSc, BAMS, RAS, San Francisco, USA is the Academy Director of Kerala

Ayurveda (USA). Suffused with expertise in traditional ayurvedic health care practices, especially

Panchakarma and Ksharasoothra, Dr. Jayarajan has been the Chief Medical Officer of Ayurvedagram, an

internationally reputed Ayurvedic Wellness Centre in Bangalore, India. He is the co-coordinator and the

resource person for various training programs conducted in traditional ayurvedic medicine and is an

accomplished trainer for advanced courses in ayurveda. His corporate sessions and workshops on

Application of Ayurveda in Daily Life, Stress Management and BMS are immensely popular. Jay has

presented several papers on ayurveda in national and international seminars.

Presentation Topic: "Comprehensive Ayurvedic approach to metabolic syndrome"

Abstract: This presentation is to map how comprehensive the traditional Ayurvedic protocols in taking

care of various conditions come under metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome, obesity and diabetes are increasing to epidemic proportions across the globe. The

numbers of obese or diabetic people are in the range of hundreds of millions. The global impact of these

disorders is immense in terms of human suffering and economic burden. There is an urgent need for a

more effective comprehensive understanding of these disease processes and their management. At this

juncture a comprehensive Ayurveda protocol can offer a lot to take care of this crisis.

Ayurveda explains a set of complex clinical disorders like Sthoulya/Medoroga and Prameha that are

matching the modern outlook of metabolic disorders. The clinical conditions associated with Prameha

correlate in many ways with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes mellitus. The etiology,

classification, pathogenesis, and management of Prameha are discussed at length and in detail in the

Ayurvedic texts. The theoretical background and comprehensive set of strategies Ayurveda utilizes to treat

Medoroga and Prameha may be valuable in managing obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes mellitus

effectively.

Ayurveda describes a set of complex clinical disorders that are characterized by frequent abnormal

urination. The generalized causes of Prameha include long periods of physical inactivity, laziness,

sleeping for long hours, and consumption of dairy products, aquatic meat, sugar/jaggery preparations,

fresh grains, and similar foods that increase Kapha. Even though Prameha evolve to a Tridoshaja Vyadhi,

it is initially a disease with Kapha predominance. The main Dhatus affected are Mamsa (muscle tissue)

and Meda (fat) with involvement of Kleda and Ojas. Low Agni (weak digestive and metabolic process)

leads to accumulation of Ama (buildup of toxins from improperly digested food particles). All these

factors combine to produce the disorders known as Prameha, which may come as hereditary or acquired.

Page 7: Program Guide

7

Patients with Prameha may be obese. There are 20 subtypes of Prameha resulting from the interaction of

the various Doshas and Dushyas. The clinical conditions associated with various types of Prameha have

much in common with disorders described in allopathic medicine that are associated with obesity,

metabolic syndrome, and diabetes mellitus.

The management emphasizes dietary and lifestyle recommendations and herbal preparations, in

accordance with the constitution of the patient and the specific etiopathology. Ayurveda also addresses the

management of psychological factors that contribute to the development of Prameha. If the patient is

physically strong and has acquired Prameha, Panchakarma is considered the ideal option. For physically

weak patients, pacification of the Doshas is recommended. Measures that minimize the morbid Kapha and

Meda (fat) will improve the health of the patient. Balanced nutrition, appropriate physical exercise, and

administration of herbs and formulations will help manage the condition.

The traditional formulations mentioned for Prameha in Ayurvedic classics are very comprehensive and

aimed at correcting the entire disease pathway. It not only corrects the digestive and metabolic imbalance

but rejuvenates the tissues and organs affected by this condition. The examples of traditional formulations

and protocol I am bringing in this presentation will reveal how strong and comprehensive the Ayurvedic

approach is to manage the conditions which are of global prevalence.

Non-timber Forest Products and Natural Products industry, and teaches internationally on the subject of

herbal medicine and Ayurveda. Todd lives in Vancouver with his wife and three children.

Presentation Topic: "Ayurveda and the natural history of metabolic syndrome: implications for

clinical success"

Abstract: Cardiologists have observed for a number of years that conditions such as adult onset diabetes,

hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, elevated LDL, obesity, and coronary heart disease are common

disorders that often occur in one patient. In 1988 Dr. Gerald Reaven postulated that these disorders are

part of a multifaceted syndrome he termed 'metabolic syndrome' (MetS), characterized by insulin

resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinemia. While there is still some difference of opinion with

regard to the diagnostic criteria and pathology of MetS, there is ample evidence that the diseases

associated with MetS are found in the traditional medical literature of Āyurveda. This lecture will review

the natural history of metabolic syndrome and examine the correlations between diseases described in

Āyurveda and those that come under the umbrella of MetS. In particular, this lecture will attempt to

rationalize the model of tridosha to delineate different aspects of MetS, and drawing upon the author's

clinical experience, how effectively addressing elements in diet and lifestyle can hasten the resolution of

this condition.

Suhas Nayak, B.A.M.S, M.D-Ayurveda, PhD-Ayurveda, Vancouver, Canada is from the state of

Gujarat, India and received bachelor of ayurvedic medicine and surgery (BAMS) in December 2000 and

was practicing as a Family Medicine Physician in Ahmedabad, India up to 2002. He continued his Post

graduate studies in ayurveda and obtained degree MD in Ayurveda in 2005 and successfully completed

PhD in ayurveda in 2009 from Gujarat Ayurveda University. Dr. Nayak worked as a Scientist for

Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy (ISM&H), Government of India, for the

development of “Ayurveda Pharmacopeia of India’ and “Ayurveda Formulary of India, later on he joined

as a lecturer at the Government Ayurveda College, Ahmedabad and since 2010 Nayak practicing as a

Ayurveda Consultant at Ojus Healthcare Ltd. Surrey, BC, Canada

Presentation Topic: The concept of Ayurveda & Metabolic disorders

Abstract: Ayurveda is a practical science that deals with physiological and pathological status of human

mortal. Ancient seers of Ayurveda have classified the elements of the body under three fundamental

components Dosa, Dhatu and Mala. For the existence of mortal, two elementary requirements are there,

one that form anatomical configuration and second which continue physiological provenance. The basic

structural architectures of the body are formed by Dhatus. They are most stable constituents of the body.

Dhatu form the substratum, which bear and nourish other constituents of the body and its concomitant

conjugation is responsible for the existence and continuation of human mortal. Thus the phenomena

through which metabolism goes on, like process of new tissue formation, maintenance of constitute tissue

building, union of smaller into larger molecules, reverse process of tissue breakdown etc. There the way

through which metabolism goes on. All changes take place between the moment of entry and the moment

of discharge of ultimate chemical products into/from the environment. The intermediary metabolism is

only being performed due to the guidance of Agni (that is the collective noun standing both for group

specific and reaction specific enzymes). In an opposite way it (Agni) also role as a key factor to produce

a most hazardous intermediate product called Ama. Ama can be considered as an undigested or partially

digested/metabolized substance which requires further Parinama and if retained as such it may produce

impairment in the micro and macro channels of the body. Which ultimately creates the conditions of

Srotavaigunya or the seat for the accumulation of the provoked Doshas converting it in the form of any

disease. It may be the cause why Ayurveda has given much importance to the concept of Agni

(Metabolism). It is obvious that Ama the intermediate by product formed due to improper assimilation of

nutrition by individual cell, which is more specific to Dhatugata/Dhatvagnimandyajanita Ama.

Interaction between Ama and Dosadhatumala are the platform for the formation of further toxic cum

foreign compound. Later there will be the fighting of endogenous and exogenous factor and causes

disease. So, probable treatment protocol of all metabolic disorder may be to correct the vitiation of Agni

Vyapaar that is the basic metabolism. Detail of these all hypothesis with fundamental basics will be

discussed at the time of presentation.

medicine and the beautiful country and countryside. In 2010 Dr. Pahwa was honored with "ATREY

AWARD" for the Excellence in Ayurveda Profession by the Association of Ayurvedic Professionals of

North America (AAPNA), USA

Presentation Topic: Sex Hormone-Testosterone, Metabolic Syndrome, Herbs and Ayurveda

Abstract: Metabolic Syndrome has become a house hold name these days. Among several factors which

contribute to Metabolic Syndrome in men the role of testosterone cannot be neglected. There is an age

related decline of testosterone in men population every year, which could start as early as 30 years of age.

The factors which decline the testosterone are Aromatase (an enzyme) which convert testosterone to

estrogen and Leptin (an adipose derived peptide hormone) which inhibits testosterone production and

contributes to weight gain and worsen insulin resistance. Testosterone level and insulin sensitivity are

inversely related. In several ways testosterone affects insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular health.

Testosterone reduces fat deposition, increases lean muscle mass, improves insulin sensitivity in muscle

cells, testosterone replacement in hypogonadial men may also alter pro-inflammatory, bio chemicals

which contribute to cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Somehow if we increase testosterone levels it

improves insulin resistance and abdominal obesity and reduced risk of CVD. Towards the treatment

regimen there is direct testosterone replacement therapy associated with monitoring of PSA and hormone

levels, however, there are preventative factors, natural and other therapies.

1. One should avoid and remove testosterone disruptors, the life style and environmental chemicals

2. Use of natural Aromatase blocking agents such as bioflavonoids

3. Herbs, trace mineral and Ayurvedic Vajikaran at the right age so the male hormones get boost

Topic: Evaluation of Ayurvedic Management for Obesity

Abstract: Obesity is one of the most common disorders in medical practice and among the most

frustrating and difficult to manage. Little progress has been made in treatment, yet major changes have

occurred in our understanding of its causes and its implication for health. Black women are more apt to

be obese than whites, and poor are more obese than the rich regardless of race. About 34% of people in

USA have relative weights in access.

WHO has formulated an index for defining obesity – Body Mass Index (BMI). It is a ratio of height in

meters and weight in kilograms. There is a simple equation of obese; input-output= + (plus), - (minus) or

(0) zero. Plus suggests weight gain, minus indicates weight loss and zero infers constant weight. The

management of obesity rests on negative energy balance. A low resting metabolic rate (RMR) for a

given body mass is a risk factor for weight gain. (Int J Obesity Relat Metab Disorder. 1992,22:S30-

8S42).

Metabolism is the breaking down of food to its simpler components: proteins, carbohydrates (or sugars),

and fats. The disorder occurs when these normal processes become disrupted and classifying into inborn

error of metabolism (inherited) and acquired during the lifetime. They may also occur as complication of

other serious diseases. If you take surplus calories they will be converted into fat. If it continues, it will

lead to over-weight or obesity. Tendency of weight gain differs from person to person due to pre-

Page 17: Program Guide

17

existing factors like genetics, health problems, general activity level, and mobility issue. Each person

has own individual daily caloric needs called BMR. An adult who has a BMI for 30 or over is known

Obese. There are genetic and hormonal influences on body weight but usually obesity results from

inactivity, unhealthy diet and eating habits, pregnancy, lack of sleep, certain medications, medical

problems, age, social and economic issues. One can counter act most risk factors through diet, physical

activity exercise, and behavior changes. Inherited metabolic disorders are treated with nutritional

counseling and support and other supportive care, acquired metabolic disorder treatment includes

normalizing the metabolic balance by both reversing the cause and administering medicine. The

fundamental of management of obesity is on the fulcrum of diet, exercise and life style changes which is

similar to Ayurvedic concept – “Ahar, Vihar, Vyayam, Nidra, Brahamcharya and Aushadhi.”

The presentation shall address the evaluation of Ayurvedic options for Obesity management and its

comparative significance.

Presentation Topic: "Concept of Agni Vitiation in Metabolic Disorders"

Abstract: Agni- the igniting factor and the most important Ayurvedic principle plays a major role in

health and well-being of an individual. Agni is responsible for all the digestive process and

transformation to take a place within body and mind. Balanced agni leads to better digestion, absorption

and assimilation as well as elimination and detoxification at all level. Imbalanced agni leads to the

formation of Ama, which is considered as metabolic toxin and Ama formations leads to metabolic

disorders. Details will be discussed for preservation, restoration and maintenance of Agni will be

discussed during the AAPNA’s 7th

Harish Vasudevan, PhD, Vancouver, Canada has always been fascinated with natural remedies and

their unique ability to work in harmony. A keen student of chemistry and biology since school, Harish

obtained his Bachelor's in Pharmacy following which he earned his Master's in Natural Products at

NIPER. Inspired by their use in ayurveda, he researched the chemistry and anti-diabetic effects of Indian

plants. The desire to get a better understanding of disease and drug development led him to Canada for a

PhD in Pharmacology. Presently at Tait Laboratories, Harish is a developing a cure based on chinese

medicine for gut health and potentially nerve ailments such as multiple sclerosis. Today he will be

looking at traditional medicine through a western lens.

Presentation Topic: "Synergy and Composition: Traditional Medicine in 21st century Science"

Abstract: Synergy has been the bedrock of any holistic and traditional method of healing. This synergy

is seen in multiple levels in the interactions between not only food, drugs and environment but also

between constituents themselves in a herbal formulation. Thus while experienced for centuries, only in

the last 2 decades have scientists been able to demonstrate synergy/antagonism at work in an extract

exhibiting improved biological action or reduced toxicity compared to individual fractions or chemicals.

This talk will explore some of these interactions and attempt to interface traditional medicine with

modern science. Another critical concern in today's world is the consistency of composition. Information

at obtaining both the chemical and biological levels, while attempted, have not been harmonized.

Addressing these 2 key issues of synergy and consistency of composition could revolutionize the current

perception of traditional medicines by conventional practitioners and the common public.

Jaisri Lambert, Ayurvedic Consultant, Vancouver, Canada has been practicing and teaching natural

therapies since l983 after her own debilitating migraine headaches kindled her interest in alternative

therapies. Her exploration led her first to Polarity Therapy, in which she became certified in 1985. As

interest and demand for natural healing classes increased, Jaisri founded the West Coast Polarity School

and later the East-West Polarity School, teaching innovations in Polarity Therapy internationally. In

1989 she met renowned Ayurvedic physician and author Vaidya Vasant D. Lad, B.A.M.S., MA.Sc. in

Victoria, B.C., an event that deeply influenced her life. “Healing is love plus intelligence”, Dr. Lad

taught, validating Jaisri’s experience that spirituality and physical life are not separate. Once her

migraine syndrome was understood and managed, Jaisri’s study of the broader, underlying philosophies

of Ayurveda began. She also began to observe that as we achieve individual balance, we also realize

more increased spiritual harmony and a feeling of the natural, innate unity of life.

During her twelve-year apprenticeship in classical Ayurveda with Vaidya Vasant Lad she learned many

hidden secrets of ‘Marma” (trigger point) science. Through studying the ancient roots of anatomy and

physiology according to Ayurveda, she has developed a body-based counseling science rooted in the

ancient Marma therapies of Ayurveda. This science, Vaidya Lad called ‘Turiya Therapy’, which denotes

the transformation of our psycho-emotional causes of disease into spiritual wisdom. Turiya Therapy is

based on the innovative work of Jaisri M. Lambert R.P.P., and influenced by Polarity Therapy of Dr.

Randolph Stone, D.O., D.C., N.D., whose contribution to the study of energy therapy on whole health

cannot be underestimated, and Polarity Therapy's parent science of Ayurvedic medicine. During her

twenty years of study and practice of Ayurveda, Jaisri has developed a deep knowledge of herbal

formulations, individualized wellness programs, bodywork techniques, pulse assessment, Ayurvedic

herbology and Panchakarma, which consists of classical Ayurvedic cleansing and rejuvenation

therapies.

Jaisri's other teachers include Dr. T. Sukumaran of Kerala and Dr. Robert E. Svoboda of Texas, both

respected and beloved Ayurvedic physicians. Jaisri has authored many articles and training manuals in

Ayurveda and Turiya Therapy, and travels internationally to introduce the theory and practice of this

ancient wisdom to delighted students of all levels. Now in her early 60s, Jaisri is an innovative healer

who has developed new techniques in Energetic Healing and Invisible Anatomy. Her success she feels is

due to the comprehensiveness and effectiveness of Ayurvedic medicine throughout history, and to the

public’s sincere search, like her own, for holistic health through natural methods. Her gift of teaching

Ayurveda at all levels is unique, bringing this knowledge to students internationally. Jaisri is fluently

bilingual in French and English.

Presentation Topic: "Prevention of Metabolic Syndrome in Ayurveda"

Abstract: The purpose of this presentation is to introduce a simple summary of the most important

aspects of preventing and managing the diagnosis of Metabolic Syndrome. We'll discuss the importance of

meditation and its role in healthy mind, food choices, timing of daily activities, water, pranayama

(breathing exercises) and how to get sound sleep, all from the perspective of ancient Ayurvedic medicine,

the world's oldest holistic health science.

Western modern medical science offers no specialists in Metabolic Syndrome, though the condition

affects a greater population than any other disease in North America. It is on an alarming increase in many

countries, especially in developed and developing countries. Metabolic Syndrome is a disease of

affluence. Its rise is especially alarming among the youth who are more susceptible to subtle marketing

tactics, because Metabolic Syndrome is a pre-cursor condition to cancerous cellular changes. I feel

education is the answer and offer this paper in honour of my principal Ayurveda teacher, Vaidya Vasant

D. Lad.

According to Ayurveda, the more than 10,000 year old science of longevity, diet and lifestyle (right use of

time) are the age-old arenas of both prevention and management of all diseases. Ayurveda speaks a great

deal about the concept of homoeostasis and how to maintain or regain one's individual balance. Metabolic

Syndrome involves imbalance of a majority of the body's tissues, organs, glands and channel systems,

their metabolic processes and psycho-emotional causative factors, such as depression/happiness.

If you feel you're either on the road to Metabolic Syndrome or already know your blood pressure, weight,

fatigue, generalized body pain, lethargy, bloating, skin rashes, blood sugar, cholesterol and/or tri-glyceride

levels are too high, or if there's a family history of stroke, the topics set out below will serve as a concise

set of guidelines to help you easily implement the age-old, tried and true suggestions for normalizing your

health profile according to Ayurveda. First, let us understand the theory of preventing and managing

Metabolic Syndrome from an Ayurvedic perspective, as theory precedes practice. This presentation will

summarize the theory and practice of both prevention and management of Metabolic Syndrome in

Ayurveda.

Nirmala Raniga, Founder, Chopra Addiction & Wellness Center, Squamish, BC, Canada

Nirmala Raniga believes “Life is precious and priceless! We all deserve to live in the present and

experience joy and healthy relationships”. With this in mind, she founded Chopra Addiction and

Wellness Center, the first truly holistic addiction recovery method in North America which is offering

cutting edge high quality assessment and therapeutic services for individuals and families impacted by

destructive compelling behaviors. The healing team at CAWC combines the latest breakthroughs in

modern Western medicine with the traditional healing arts of the East. The goal of the holistic health

care experts at the Center is to restore balance and wholeness in the lives of the people who come for

help. An integral part of the program at CAWC is inclusion of the ancient healing system called

Ayurveda. Originating in India 5000 years ago, Ayurveda focuses on the individual as a whole;

physically, emotionally and spiritually. For Nirmala, work is more than just a career. It’s a calling. By

combining her business acumen with her inherent sense of compassion she has enabled hundreds of

people with addiction and emotional issues to regain control of their lives. She was a nominee for

YWCA women of distinction awards in the business and professions category in 2008 and she was also

nominated for 2008 Celebration of Business Excellence Award in the business category. She is a Chopra

Center instructor certified in Primordial Sound Meditation and Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga. She is

passionate about sharing timeless wisdom tools for mind-body health, deeper life fulfillment and

emotional healing.

Presentation Topic: Addiction and addictive behaviors causes severe metabolic disorders. How

Ayurvedic approach helps!

Abstract: When a person is addicted to substances like alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, food there is a built up

of physical and emotional ama or toxins over time. These toxic residues begin to interfere with the

circulation of vital energy in the body. Accumulated ama leads to depression, chronic pain, indigestion,

fatigue and immune imbalance providing grounds for metabolic disorders like diabetes, high blood

pressure, coronary heart disease and liver failure. For example, physically ama can be seen as

accumulation of incomplete metabolized food i.e. when one emotionally eats; the excess calories that the

body is not able to digest get deposited as cellulite in tissues or cholesterol in blood vessels. If one does

not fully process an emotional experience especially negative ones, the undigested feelings keeps the

person responding in predictable patterns that inhibit the person being fully present.

For a person to heal a total wholeness approach is required. This includes combining the latest

breakthroughs in modern Western medicine with ancient Ayurvedic healing methods of the East to

unlock the human potential and bring about a return to wholeness. Originating in India 5000 years ago,

Ayurveda focuses on the individual as a whole; physically, emotionally and spiritually. In addition to

group and individual therapy, inclusion of mind, body, spirit healing that addresses the needs of all five

senses: touch (massage), sound (music), sight (art therapy) smell (aromatherapy) and taste (vegetarian

cuisine), which, when combined with meditation, yoga and acupuncture, promote balance and

integration of mind, body and spirit.

Abstract: Experience the healing power of sacred sounds or Nadha Yoga. Access your inner

light/illumination through the Jyothi Kriyas, which is a unique, source inspired series to re-balance and

realign the system and the chakras (energy vortexes). Understand how chanting and singing bajans can

purify and harmonize the system and open the heart. One of the contributors to metabolic disorders is

ama ( impurities/undigested matter) in the system. Suppressed emotions and negative thinking patterns

can also increase ama in the system apart from an unhealthy lifestyle. The classical yogic system, the

sister science of ayurveda, has a wide range of tools to purify, though our focus will be on the above

mentioned ones. These practices will clear ama and allow the spark of consciousness to glow bright in

you.
