quick factsJoin us as a Lifelong Learner
Lifelong Learners are 40+ year old professionals on leave, retirees, or simply adult adventurers who want to travel and study side-by-side with an energetic and dynamic community made up of undergraduate students and faculty experts from around the world. Lifelong Learners have the option to bring children or even grandchildren.
Discover Semester at Sea
Semester at Sea is a global, shipboard-based study abroad program — the only floating university campus of its kind. Courses are offered in a wide array of academic disciplines and provide a comparative look into the art, history, culture, economy, and other aspects of the countries and regions visited during a voyage.
“
It wasn’t what we did, it’s what Semester at Sea has done for us…
it’s a lifelong bond.
— Jill Roberts, Lifelong Learner (Fall 2008)

The World Is Your Classroom, and Its People Your Teachers
~~~~~~~~~~Semester at Sea is a floating university led by innovative educators who are passionate about global education and excel in experiential learning. Each voyage, a new team of faculty and staff are drawn from among the world’s finest institutions of higher learning.
Global Courses & Field Classes
As a Lifelong Learner, you have access to up to 75+ courses offered across many disciplines of study — world religions, oceanography, comparative politics, and public health, to name a few — each with a companion field class. Field classes are in-country, faculty-led programs that bring classroom learning to life. Courses reflect the voyage’s itinerary and faculty.
Hands-On, In-Country Learning
~~~~~~~~~~
With 10-12 destinations on each voyage and an average of five days spent in each port, sailing with Semester at Sea gives Lifelong Learners the opportunity to truly immerse themselves in each country. Led by professors and local guides, in-port excursions with Semester at Sea are designed to complement and enhance classroom material. In addition, Lifelong Learners are also welcome to explore each port independently.
Homestays & Volunteer Opportunities
Homestays allow you to experience in-port cultures with your fellow voyagers by staying overnight with local hosts as a welcome guest and learner. Volunteer programs are designed to positively impact host communities, as well as you, the traveler, while minimizing environmental impact.
MV World Odyssey
~~~~~~~~~~The MV World Odyssey has operated as the Semester at Sea campus since 2015 — the program’s sixth ship in its 55+ year history. The ship’s well-appointed facilities include indoor and outdoor dining, an indoor gym, outdoor sun deck for group fitness activities, pools, and ten deck areas. There are nine classrooms, a theater, a large auditorium, and library to accommodate the educational needs of the program.
“ The voyage was not just about the classes I took. A large part of it was sharing the moment, the joy that I experienced with my Extended Family… it’s a voyage that keeps on giving. It didn’t end the day I disembarked, and it filled my heart in so many ways. — Marillee Carroll, Lifelong Learner (Fall 2010, Spring 2015)
”
~~~~~~~~~~Travel in good company
Lifelong Learners are active participants in the shipboard community. Whether engaged in classes in the MV World Odyssey’s world-class facilities, joining undergraduates and professors on in-port excursions, mentoring students, or leading evening seminars in their own area of expertise, Lifelong Learners are successful, intellectually curious professionals who contribute greatly to Semester at Sea’s unique academic setting.

Extended Family Program
~~~~~~~~~~The Extended Family Program provides a unique opportunity for Lifelong Learners to ‘adopt’ students into a small shipboard family. Lifelong Learners form a bond with students as shipboard ‘moms’ and ‘dads’ and continue that friendship for years to come. Many Lifelong Learners report that the extended family program was the most impactful experience of their voyage.
Forge lasting relationships
Often the most surprising and cherished aspect of a voyage is the community that forms on the ship from an eclectic and diverse group of Lifelong Learners, faculty and staff and their families, undergraduates, and a multi-national crew. The life-changing and eye-opening experiences that Semester at Sea voyagers encounter together on this journey create friendships among the entire community that are lifelong and unlike any other relationship.
A Lifetime of Learning
~~~~~~~~~~Semester at Sea is the perfect way for adults seeking adventure and personal growth to explore the world. Join the Lifelong Learning program and circumnavigate the globe. Sail alone or bring family and friends! Either way, you can count on well-rounded travel and educational experience that is truly global.
