Whitney M. Young, Jr. was one of the most celebrated — and controversial — leaders of the civil rights era. The Powerbroker: Whitney Young’s Fight for Civil Rights follows his journey from segregated Kentucky to head of the National Urban League. Unique among black leaders, he took the fight directly to the powerful white elite, gaining allies in business and government, including three presidents. Young had the difficult tasks of calming the fears of white allies, relieving the doubts of fellow civil rights leaders, and responding to attacks from the militant Black Power movement. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Nancy Sung Shelton, Sr. Program Associate at Coordinated Care Services, Inc.; William Clark, President & CEO at Urban League of Rochester; and Dr. Leonard Brock, Associate Vice President of Youth Development at The Community Place. The Powerbroker also airs on WXXI-TV/HD on Monday, February 18 at 10 p.m.

This film is part of WXXI’s African American Educational Awareness Film Series, now in its 5th year. The series is made possible with support from our sponsors: Pothos Productions, Freedom Trail Commission, WHTK-1280AM What’s Goin’ on with Brown & Allen, The Community Place of Greater Rochester and Threshold CAPP. This film is part of Community Cinema, presented by ITVS, funded by Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Dear FrienDS,To all our Downton Abbey fans – I hope you are enjoying season three! PBS reports that nearly 8 million viewers tuned in for the premiere on January 6, proving that the series continues to enthrall audiences across the country. It is recognized as one of the best dramas on television today. If you missed any of the episodes in January, you’ll be able to catch them all on February 3 when we continue our tradition of bringing you “Super Drama Sunday.” An alternative to the Super Bowl, WXXI-TV hosts a marathon of popular programs and this year it will include Downton Abbey (you’ll find the complete marathon schedule on the cover of this magazine).

In February we honor Black History Month with special programs on WXXI-TV and radio, as well as at the Little Theatre. You’ll find program highlights on the opposite page of this letter, including details about the free screening of The Powerbroker: Whitney Young’s Fight for Civil Rights at The Little on Monday, February 25 at 7 p.m. For a full list of programs, visit WXXI.org/bh.

At WXXI, we’ve kicked off the New Year with new program initiatives and a busy schedule, especially for our news department and our music hosts. Perhaps you caught Hélène Biandudi’s live reports from South Sudan about Rochester’s involvement in a new school. Our Innovation Trail’s Health Care Innovation series aired on AM 1370 and 88.5 FM. Maybe you heard The Ying Quartet’s live performance on Classical 91.5’s Backstage Pass, listened to Brenda Tremblay’s Healthy Musicians podcasts online, or enjoyed Kate Lee’s performance on WRUR’s Open Tunings with Scott Regan.

As we enter into our Spring Membership campaign, February 3 - 8, we hope you’ll remember that the fine reporting, intriguing interviews, and beautiful music you enjoy is made possible by your support. Thank you for being part of the WXXI family!

He was a long-time supporter of WXXI, whose commitments helped the station fulfill its mission of public service. Mr. McKnight was a good friend to many at the station. In 2010 he was named WXXI’s Associate of the Year, an award that recognizes those individuals who have made significant contributions in support of WXXI, its broadcasts, and operations. A member of WXXI since 1994, Mr. McKnight believed in the station’s mission and was an avid fan of 1370 Connection and a frequent caller to the show. Always keeping tabs on how we were doing, Mr. McKnight was very active in WXXI’s membership drives – offering numerous member challenges. We are especially grateful that Mr. McKnight remembered WXXI in his estate, benefitting WXXI and our community for years to come.

Raised in Albion, New York, Mr. McKnight lived in Washington, DC, New York City, and Chicago before making his home in Rochester. After serving in WWII, he graduated from Clarkson College of Technology in Potsdam, NY with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. From there he became a magazine editing student at the Syracuse University Graduate School of Journalism. A retired writer and editor for Railway Signaling & Communications and Railway Age magazines, Mr. McKnight wrote a book on the history of railroad signals, entitled You Can’t Beat the Train. The book is currently being published by the Barriger National Railroad Library at the University of Missouri, St. Louis.

Women Who make ameriCa tueSDay, February 26 at 8 p.m. on WXXi-tv/hD

Makers shares the stories of exceptional women whose pioneering contributions continue to shape the world in which we live. Narrated by three-time Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep, Makers takes its cue from the Women’s Movement’s motto, “the personal is political,” delving into the personal lives of its subjects. The film is built from first person, intimate accounts of women who experienced this time of change. Rochester’s own Ursula Burns, CEO of Xerox and the first African-American woman to run a Fortune 500 company, is one of the many women featured. Others include: movement leaders such as author and feminist activist Gloria Steinem and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton; opponents like conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly; celebrities including media leader Oprah Winfrey and journalist Katie Couric; political figures including former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; and many “ordinary” women who confronted dramatic social upheaval in their own lives.

WXXI will also host a free preview screening of this film at the Little Theatre on Monday, February 11 at 7 p.m., followed by a panel discussion. WXXI also invites attendees to share and record stories of women who have influenced their lives in our listening booth on site at the Little.

Sara’S Weeknight mealSSaturDayS at 1 p.m. on WXXi-tv/hDbeginS February 16

Renowned chef, cookbook author and television personality Sara Moulton reveals kitchen tips, short cuts, and strategies while preparing delicious, family-friendly dishes in Sara’s Weeknight Meals. Sara visits markets, farms, gardens shops, butchers and fisheries to learn about the source of her ingredients. She’s also visited by guest chefs from around the globe — Top Chef finalist Dale Talde, Brazilian chef Leticia Moreinos Schwartz, and James Beard-winning chef Marc Vetri — as they reveal their secret food sources before preparing a meal in Sara’s home kitchen.

Rochester’s own Dave Marshall and Chris Christopher (pictured left), the multiple Emmy Award-winning filmmaking team, reveals the story of what really happened during the 1971 Attica prison riot in Criminal Injustice: Death and Politics at Attica.

Forty years after the bloodiest one-day encounter between Americans since the Civil War, the dead remain buried along with the truth. Until now. Based on interviews with eyewitnesses who just now are telling their stories, as well as access to newly discovered documents, the film sheds new light on exactly what happened at Attica between September 9-13, 1971. Criminal Injustice raises compelling new questions about the 39 deaths at Attica, White House involvement, and the corrupting influence of Nelson Rockefeller’s political aspirations before, during, and long after the deadly retaking of the prison. Former hostage Michael Smith said, “the cover up started as soon as the shooting stopped.” This film reveals that the truth actually may have been concealed long before that.

In response to the tragic shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, WXXI-TV/HD will broadcast a series of special programs the week of February 18-22. These thought-provoking programs are meant to add context, depth, and nuance to the national conversation about gun violence in America.

The series includes a Frontline report on the battle over gun control and a psychological profile of the Connecticut shooter, Adam Lanza, a NOVA documentary on violence and the brain, two independent documentaries, one on the history of guns in America and the other examining how best to secure our schools, a Need to Know episode, a Washington Week discussion of pending legislation on access to guns, and a week-long series of timely PBS NewsHour reports.

gunS in ameriCatueSDay, February 19 at 9 p.m.Guns in America traces the evolution of guns in America, their inextricable link to violence, and the clash of cultures that reflect competing visions of our national identity. With an estimated 300 million firearms in circulation, the nation is saturated with firearms and overwhelmed by the human toll they’ve taken. Over thirty people die every day from a gun-related injury.

Frontline: raiSing aDam lanzatueSDay, February 19 at 10 p.m.In the wake of the Newtown school massacre FRONTLINE examines the life of a young man and the town he changed forever. Adam Lanza left behind a trail of death and destruction, but little else. The mass killer had no known friends, no diary. He destroyed his computer and any evidence it might have provided. His motives, and his life, remain largely a mystery. In partnership with The Hartford Courant, FRONTLINE will look for answers to the central, and so far elusive, question: “Who was Adam Lanza?”

nova:minD oF a rampage killerWeDneDay, February 20 at 9 p.m.As the nation tries to understand the tragic events at Newtown, NOVA correspondent Miles O’Brien separates fact from fiction, investigating new theories that the most destructive rampage killers are driven most of all, not by the urge to kill, but the wish to die.

the path to violenCe WeDneSDay, February 20 at 10 p.m.Ever since the wake-up call that was Columbine, schools and law enforcement have developed multiple strategies to prevent attacks. Remarkably, more than 120 school assaults have been thwarted in the past ten years. But, while security hardware and physical barriers can play a deterrent role, it’s been psychologists who have come up with the most helpful tools to prevent violent attacks.

The Path to Violence tells the story of a powerfully effective Secret Service program - the Safe School Initiative - that’s helped schools detect problem behavior in advance.

1370 Forums & AM 1370 SpecialsTavis Smiley presents “Memories of the Movement” airs Saturday, February 2 and 9 at 4 p.m. The years of the Civil Rights Movement are counted among the most volatile, yet vibrant, in American history. In our Black History month special, Memories of the Movement, The Tavis Smiley Show celebrates the courage, conviction and commitment of the everyday people who made extraordinary contributions to American social progress. Memories of the Movement features poignant, humorous, unheard or little known stories from a number of well-known civil rights icons.Let Freedom Sing: The Music of the Abolitionists airs Sunday, February 3 at 9 p.m. Let Freedom Sing chronicles the idealistic artists, uncompromising personalities and powerful music of the era, and looks at how these forces combined to turn abolitionism from a scorned fringe movement into a nation-changing force. This one-hour special will be hosted by Noah Adams.

Humankind: Justice Denied airs Sunday, February 10 at 9 p.m. How could a nation founded on a Declaration that “all men are created equal” permit slavery? Nowhere was this contradiction more stark than at the Supreme Court, which formally ruled in the Dred Scott case that black people have “no rights” -- a decision Abraham Lincoln adamantly opposed. Learn about harsh public reaction when federal judges enforced slavery through fugitive slave laws and the Dred Scott ruling.Heavenly Sight Black History Month Special airs Sunday, February 24 at 9 p.m. Host David Marash brings us the stories, music and this insight from the blind gospel tradition that transformed American song and gave it soul. We hear the music and stories of black gospel singers including: Arizona Dranes, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Blind Willie Johnson, Ray Charles, Flora Molton, and Reverend Gary Davis whose “holy blues” influenced Ry Cooder and Bob Dylan.

Born from the trauma of the Second World War, Edinburgh’s unique combination of festivals is a triumph of international shared storytelling. Encompassing classical music, theater, literature, popular and folk music, science, visual art and a city-wide sharing of culture, this radio series will give listeners a first-hand experience of being in one of the world’s most creative and cosmopolitan cities during a period when over 600,000 visitors experience the “annual cultural equivalent of the Olympics” and 4,000 performances take place in hundreds of venues ranging from exquisite concert halls to site-specific fringe spaces.

The four programs are built around concerts recorded at this year’s Edinburgh International Festival, one of the most important classical music festivals in the world. Among the classical music highlights are: pianists Leif Ove Andsnes and Daniil Trifonov, chamber music by Trio Zimmerman, Les Vents Français and the Calder Quartet, violinist Leonidas Kavakos with pianist Nicola Lugansky, bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni, with pianist Justus Zeyen, the European Youth Orchestra conducted by Gianadrea Noseda, and the Iraqi Youth Orchestra, led by Paul MacAlindin.

This two part series celebrates the centenary year (2012) of the great conductor and educator Erich Leinsdorf,

who was the Principal Conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra from 1947 to 1955. Distinguished artists and others who worked with him share stories of his legacy as a perfectionist conductor of operas, orchestral music, and concertos, a passionate educator of performing musicians, and a devoted advocate of an enormously wide-ranging arena of composers. Gunther Schuller, Phyllis Curtin, Marilyn Horne, Joseph Silverstein, Vic Firth, John Oliver, Henry Fogel, Dan Gustin, Anthony Fogg, Deborah Borda, Costa Pilavachi, and Michael Skinner recall Maestro Leinsdorf’s powerful impact at the Metropolitan Opera, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Tanglewood Music Centre, and the New York Philharmonic. Maestro Leinsdorf himself is heard speaking about the interpretation and also the teaching of some repertoire for which he became especially celebrated and revered.

La Bayadère (“The Temple Dancer”), from the Bolshoi Ballet, tells the story of impossible love between the dancer Nikiya and the warrior Solor, set against the backdrop of lush, exotic India. Marius Petipa’s choreography, here in a new scenic version by Yuri Grigorovich, is exquisite; especially noteworthy is the scene known as The Kingdom of the Shades, one of the most celebrated excerpts in ballet, and one of the first examples of “abstract ballet.”

On the surface Comfort Zone is a film about how climate change will affect one place – Rochester, New York. But, the film is much bigger than “Inconvenient Truth comes to Rochester”. It brings the global issue of climate change to a local and personal level. It’s the story of what happens when we try to translate this global problem to our individual lives. What is at stake? What can I do about it? What if dealing with this problem asks things of me that I’m not yet ready to give? The climate is already changing. Now what about us? Comfort Zone directors Kate Kressmann-Kehoe, Dean Donnelly, and Dave Danesh will participate in a post screening Q&A.

Lifespan, a 501c(3) non-profit organization founded in 1971, provides more than 30 services that help older adults take on both the challenges and opportunities of longer life.

According to Mary Rose McBride, Vice President, Marketing Communications, “Lifespan is known for providing expert, non-biased information about matters such as financing long-term care, eldercare situations, and Medicare and health insurance options. We specialize in helping in elder abuse and geriatric addiction situations. In addition, our two older adult centers are hubs of activities providing needed socialization opportunities.”

Lifespan partnered with WXXI to support a campaign designed to recruit baby boomers as mentors for students of the City School District. McBride explained, “It was a natural fit and potential volunteers reported hearing about the opportunity on WXXI. We partnered with WXXI again to inform family caregivers about a special series of educational workshops. We believe a major benefit of our partnership is being aligned with a respected community asset like WXXI, along with an opportunity to extend our communications vehicle and message.”

On a personal note, McBride is a fan of PBS MASTERPIECE CLASSIC Downton Abbey!

Lifespan’s 17th Celebration of Aging will be held on March 28, 2013, with guest speaker, Rita Moreno. The event is a community luncheon focusing attention on people who are role models for aging with vitality.
