LEBANON’S WATER SECTOR

OVERVIEW

❖ Challenges

❖ Growing population

❖ Neighboring conflict

❖ Low level of infrastructure

❖ Water deficit

❖ Future Solutions

❖ Better irrigation systems

❖ Treatment of wastewater

❖ De-contamination of seawater

THE TRADE COUNCIL IN BEIRUT

PROSPECT

The Lebanese water and energy sectors are in their early stages of development and still need massive improvements to ensure efficiency and quality in the water and energy supply and management.

The state government has attached great importance to developing this sector. Most recently illustrated by passing a Capital Investment Plan targeting infrastructural developments primarily in the water sector.

It is estimated that The water demand in 2015 was 1,483 mm3 whereas the supply was only estimated at around 1,200 mm3. This leaves a water deficit on about 283 mm3. The demand is expected to increase and estimate from the Ministry of Energy and Water expects the deficit to increase to 602 mm3 in 2025.

THE TRADE COUNCIL IN BEIRUTTHE TRADE COUNCIL IN BEIRUT

CHALLENGES

Uneven precipitation and storage problems

90% of Lebanon’s precipation falls between November and April.

Current facilities are not at all equipped to store and distribute it during the dry period.

Ineffiency and Wasted water

The agricultural sector is still employing incredibly inefficent irrigation techniques.

The current system designed to harness clean water running close to the sea and the distributing mechanism is subpar.

More underdevelopment

The facilities dealing with wastewater are neither efficient nor sustainabile, essentially recycling zero percent of the water used.

Water pollution in the sea and rivers

The methods used to disperse of used water in Lebanon are implemented without anyconsideration of sustainability, ecosystems or recycling.

THE TRADE COUNCIL IN BEIRUT

SOLUTIONS AND POSSIBILITIES FOR DANISH COMPANIES

Denmark is known for having an extensive water infrastructure with emphasis on supplying high quality water to consumers and a great concern for the environment both when it comes to acquiring and dispersing water.

Danish know-how regarding all things water related – whether it be wastewater treatment or infrastructure development – makes Danish companies extremely suited to deal with the challenges in Lebanon.

In light of the CIP and the money pledged at the CEDRE conference we believe there to be good opportunities for Danish companies wanting to take up projects in the Lebanese water and energy sector.

THE TRADE COUNCIL IN BEIRUT

EXAMPLES OF SOLUTIONS:

Preserve non-revenue water harness the water during precipitation, save the sources of fresh water before contamination

Help Lebanese develop their water legislation show the Lebanese the way forward, by prioritizing legislation targeting the improvement of the water sector

Improve the quality of tap water Lebanon has an old sewage network, but the foundations are there for the tap water quality to become drinkable

Aviation in the Middle East and North Africa

Why MENA is an attractive market

➢Passenger traffic to, from and within the Middle East will grow 5.9% annually until 2036, well above the global average of 4.4% - to approx. 517 million

➢Governments of oil exporting countries want to reduce their dependency on oil by diversifying their economies – in favour of e.g. aviation

➢Aviation-related projects for $58bn to cope with the strong demand

➢Geographically well placed to tap into new and emerging markets in Asia and Africa

➢Around 8 hours flying time from 2/3 of the world’s population – great potential as the world’s aviation hub
