Helping Youth Dream Big
The Opportunity Fund is an initiative created by The University of Winnipeg to help make it possible for youth to dream big. The Opportunity Fund is about action, it is about investing in real dreams so that as a community, we see real results. It is about bridging the graduation gap and it is about transforming lives.
The Opportunity Fund is unique among Canadian universities. The goal of The University of Winnipeg is to build a $10-million endowment fund that will help ensure that everyone, regardless of background and socio-economic status, has access to higher education and opportunities through fast-track bursaries and tuition credits.
We believe it is important for children to know that a university education is possible for them. Students as early as Grade 4 can ‘earn as they learn’ by staying in school, improving their marks, and participating in school and community activities. By the time they graduate, a student can earn up to $4,000 in tuition credits to attend The University of Winnipeg. Currently 180 inner-city and north end students are registered in the program.
The Opportunity Fund also provides a signifi cant number of fast-track bursaries each year thanks to generous donations, and since 2007 the University has awarded 850 Opportunity Fund bursaries. Approximately 100 Opportunity Fund students have already graduated!
The Dante Alighieri Society of Winnipeg has been providing Italian language classes for over 40 years. Our foremost objective is to: instill a sense of pride in the Italian cultural heritage by maintaining and promoting the Italian language and culture in Manitoba. Our objective is similar to the mission statement of the Sons of Italy Canada which also strives “To promote and preserve the Italian language, culture, and traditions in our country”.
The Dante offers classes to children from pre-school to grade 12 in addition to classes for adults. Our program for children is unique. The students of the Dante are divided by school age groups; not multi-levels in one classroom with one teacher. At the older levels, Dante students are provided with training for oral and written language exams to obtain high school language credits. Classes run from late September to early May. Our adult programs offer the opportunity to learn the Italian language in a relaxed environment with excellent instructors from Beginner to Advanced and Italian for Travellers.
