UPIR UGM's CURRICULUM
Philosophy
Starting in August 2016, UPIR UGM transitioned from Kurikulum 2000
to Kurikulum 2015. This transition was completed in August 2018,
meaning that all UPIR UGM students, enrolled in either the regular or
international program, use a single curriculum. This curriculum,
Kurikulum 2015, was developed in a workshop attended by lecturers,
support staff, and alumni – taking into account the opinions of
partners and students that were collected through questionnaires,
interviews, and focus group discussions.
Kurikulum 2015 upholds the educational philosophy that
underpinned Kurikulum 2000. It is based on :three principles
1. Self-tailored
Each student is given the opportunity to design her/his own study
plan. The curriculum is structured in a way that students can
choose one out of three concentrations and any area studies they
wish to be experts in.
2. Facilitation
The curriculum and its curricular contents support the students'
study plan. To compliment this, students are highly
recommended to supplement their studies by participating in
extracurricular activities and other non-curricular activities.
3. Regulated
UPIR UGM has in place a set of regulations and procedures to
ensure that the students' freedom to tailor their own study has
the necessary structure needed to maximize acquisition of
certain knowledge, attitudes, and skills.
Undergraduate Program of IR UGM’s Curriculum (2019 Edition)5
6
Curriculum Structure
Kurikulum 2015 adopts a semi-block system. Each student is
required to complete in no more than . 144 credits 5 years
During the first year, students must complete the required courses
from both the Faculty and the Department. These include courses
that introduce students to the three concentrations and the area
studies.
Having gained basic knowledge, attitudes, and skills from the
introductory courses, in the second year, students must choose one
out of three concentrations: (1) Global Politics and Security, (2)
Peace and Conflict Studies, or (3) International Economy and
Political Development, taking as block . nine concentration courses
It is also mandatory for every student to complete five out of
seventeen area studies courses.
In the third year, students start to take cross-concentration and
cross-departmental courses. They must choose at least six out of
eighteen courses offered by a concentration outside of their focus
and are allowed to take a maximum of two cross-departmental
courses. During this year, students taking the international
program participate in a student exchange, double degree, or study
abroad program in one of UPIR UGM's partner universities. In
addition, students take the Independent Study course, where they
compose a thesis proposal .
Students are expected to complete community service (Kuliah Kerja
Nyata/KKN) and Undergraduate Thesis in their fourth and/or fifth
year.
