Programme and Newsletter August - November 2018

Chair's Report The 30th Anniversary Celebration was a great success with 50 people attending at The Old Chapel in Upminster on Saturday 16th June. I would like to thank everyone who made it such a great day. That includes the collective contributions from the people who submitted their pictures, organisers, photographers, helpers on the day, and all attendees. It was wonderful to welcome back Marjorie Ellis plus Derek Stevens and his wife, to name but a few former members. Marjorie and Derek each brought their own photograph albums so that they could reminisce with old friends. Peter Owen put together a film of photographs from the 30 years which was fascinating and entertaining.

Our Anniversary Walk took place on 2nd June, and to mark the day several group pictures were taken, one of which appeared on the celebration cake. Overall a great 30th anniversary was had by all. The next big events for the group will be our next social outing in the latter part of September, then our AGM on 18th October at Hornchurch Library. To round off the year, we will have our Christmas Lunch on 4th December. No venue has been set for the social and Christmas Lunch yet. Ellen

Secretary’s Report It certainly was a successful event, our Anniversary Celebration. Several members from the past, including our very first walk leader Marjorie Ellis, now living in Kent, attended. Many thanks to Ellen and Peter and all the volunteers who helped.

AGM Our AGM will be held on Thursday October 18th at the Hornchurch Library in North Street, commencing at 7.30 pm. Invitations for the committee are invited, especially for a Webmaster. Enter the date in your diary, plenty of room in the hall. Ken Havering Footpath & Walking Environment Officer Vacant

Walks Secretary Once again you've added a good variety of walks to the programme - something to suit all tastes, thank you. I hope that you find the information about Walkfinder entries useful (see the revised All Walks article). Marion Information and Web Master It’s strange to think that it is 10 years, this summer, since I joined Ramblers. And based on a 5 mile walk for 50 weeks of the year that’s 2,500 miles, or here to Cairo with change. Perhaps I should have kept a record of those walks, and the friends on them, plus the discussions on many topics. To Brexit or not. Will England win this or that, or not. Being pleased for others when they say they are going to Wimbledon for the Men’s final, or have new grandchildren. Saddened by trips to Corbets Tey. All brought into focus by the 30th anniversary events. A lot of work in planning and creation by many people put it all together. Thank you to everyone. I have had the privilege of being Webmaster for a good part of those 10 years. Creating the new website, based mostly on Len’s previous version, with a tweak here and there. Evolving the e-mail information system with its monthly News update, (possibly the only one in Essex) Resolving issues around Walkfinder, keeping members up to date with information, giving them confidence to do away with paper programmes, enabling our Green Initiative. Making sure we comply with new rules as they come along, most recently GDPR. (But don’t worry something else will come along, either from without, like GDPR, or within like, Data Transformation.) And of liaising with our sponsor, Ramblers Walking Holidays (RWH). Never a dull moment, well not many! Undoubtedly there will be vacancies on the Committee at the AGM. You may feel it’s not for you. But give it a try. You will never know till you do. Peter

Dogs on Walks

All Walks Check our website (see page 1) for up-to-date walk information. Walk Leader's Checklist leaflets are available from the Walks Secretary. Remember to tell the Walks Secretary when submitting your walk if you don't want it to go on Walkfinder (no reason is needed, it's your choice). Information to help you decide whether you would like your walk included or excluded from Walkfinder entries on Ramblers.org.uk. As a general rule, London walks are added as Members Only (to

keep numbers to a manageable level), with country walks going Public (unlikely to get too many walkers to be a problem).

When we meet somewhere for forward travel (by car or train for example), these also don't get added (we can't give an accurate walk start time).

No walk leader names or phone numbers are added on Walkfinder, instead we use the group name / email / mobile (see page 1) for the contact options.

Visit the TFL web site (tfl.gov.uk) to check your route and the availability of public transport before travelling, especially at weekends, to allow for the planning of alternative routes. Car Share Please car share where possible, as parking is often quite limited.

To comply with the Disability Equality Act (2010), we must allow registered assistance dogs to participate with their owners e.g. guide, hearing, service, therapy and seizure alert dogs. We will continue to let Walks Leaders decide whether to allow non-assistance dogs to participate in their walks.

Walking with the Ramblers All sporting activities have inherent hazards associated with them, and rambling is no exception. In spite of the safety of members always being the paramount concern, accidents will occasionally occur. It is therefore important that when entering into the activity, each member appreciates that they have a responsibility to identify the hazards associated with the activity, and take all reasonable steps to eliminate or minimize the potential for an accident to occur. The Ramblers Association is a company limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales. Company registration number 445892. Registered charity in England and Wales Number 1093577. Registered office, 2 Floor, Camelford House, 87-90 Albert Embankment London SE1 7TW. Incident Report Forms Good forward planning helps to reduce the likelihood of a reportable incident happening. Walk leaders are provided with an Incident Report Form (spare forms are available from the Walks Secretary). The form has sections on When and How to fill in the form, and other guidance to assist.

The Havering and East London Ramblers group has joined The Walking Partnership. This partnership, supported by Ramblers Walking Holidays, provides direct financial contributions to local walking groups to help with organising group walks, encouraging people to get out walking, helping to clear and improve footpaths, providing equipment to help walkers etc. Over the past 65 years, Ramblers Walking Holidays has given many millions of pounds to assist walking charities and conservation projects in Britain and the countries they visit on their worldwide holidays. Now our group can benefit directly. Ramblers Walking Holidays operate group walking holidays in the UK and all around the world. Each holiday is accompanied by a qualified walks leader, so you can leave all the organising to them and just enjoy meeting like minded people and of course, some fantastic walking. Holidays are graded in terms of difficulty, and there is a full range from sightseeing right up to hut-to-hut mountain treks. Take a look at their website on www.ramblersholidays.co.uk or give them a call on 01707 33113 for more details or to order a brochure. Remember when you book to quote the name of our group, and we will then receive a contribution of £10 per person on UK holidays, £20 per person on short haul holidays, and £30 per person on long haul holidays. This extra funding could really make a difference to us.
