18th Mediterranean Maritime Heritage Forum"Historical and Traditional Vessels of the Mediterranean,,

istanbul, 28-29 May 2012

The country of Turkey organises its first edition of the AMMM Forum. The occasion offersus the opportunity to locus on traditional vessels and heritage ships. The Turkish prolessionalson maritime heritage are saleguarding the most numerous traditional vessels collections, datingfrom the Late Antiqui! onwards, in museums all around the country. Much of this heritaçhas come to light thanks to numerous undersea archeology research and excavations. Amongstthe most important is the ongoing Yenikapi excavations, dedicated to what mary experts ðallthe g,reatest nautical archeological site ever discoveredl The Yenikapi Marmaray constructionsite reaches back 8,500years into the history of tstanbul. since 2004, archaeologists haveuncovered 37 wrecked ships, 32 of which are merchant vessels equipped with sails and fiveare galleys propelled by rowers. These vessels sank between the 5th and I lth centuries. lnaddition, 40,000 objects have been registered in the inventory, while approximately 150,000pieces are being studied and nearly I million cases of earthenware pots and plates have beenuncovered thus far at the 4th centu1/ port olTheodosius.

It is also relevant to mention the Historical Boats Collection of the Istanbul Naval Museum, which has the worlds' oldest historic ship and the only original galley in the world, now preservedin the lstanbul Naval Museum. Besides the historical galley, the museum also has an inventoryof the worlds' largest and richest state barges (sultans caiques) collection.

Although it is not always the case, many Mediterranean maritime museums have a largenumber of traditional vessels and heritage ships in their collections. The context of maritimemuseums missions and goals differ: some may deal with vessels as artefacts, others may bringinto play vessels for its historical uses or to help explain men and its relation to the maritimeworld. We have chosen three possible approaches to traditional vessels and heritage shipsorganised in three main sub-themes/sessions:

- "Cataloguing Traditional Vessels and Heritage Ships"The main goal is to present different projects with an emphasis on cataloguing criteria

and methodolog¡r. The aim of this thematic sub-group is to gain a deeper insight ¡n differentapproaches and practises in the Mediterranean region, particularly Eett¡nE to know othermuseums experiences, especially in Turkey. This session will help AMMM museums to improveon methodolog¡r and criterion needed to further develop the AMMM Worlahop project startedat Palermo in October 201 I .

- "Traditional Vessels and Heritage Ships as Museum Obiects"This session will present different approaches in presentation and interpretation oftraditional

vessels and heritage ships in maritime museums across Mediterranean, with a main focus onpresenting various museological and museographical approaches in communicating the vesselscollections to public (both in permanent exh¡b¡tions and in situ).

- "Traditional Vessels and Heritage Ships as Containers of Collective Memory"The third session will present different projects managed by museums (together with local

communities and tourism associations) that are approaching traditional vessels and heritage

ships, and still living intangible heritage connected to them, as containers of collective memoD/a.nd recognising the role of maritime heritage in the processes of defining local identities anãtheir sense ol place across Mediterranean.

There will be a fourth session "AMMM News" conceived as an open platform ¡n whichmembers of the Association are invited to briefly present on-going projects in their museums.
