MAJOR RESEARCH PROJECTS OF INTERNET SOCIOLOGY
LABORATORY
“World Internet Project”
Project description. The Institute is a partner of the international
research organization “World Internet Project” (hereinafter – project),
which unites scientists specializing in the study of Internet communication
from 50 countries. Every year the research teams of participating countries
carry out extensive surveys that capture changes in the dynamics,
structure and content of Internet communication according to the same
methodology.
The main objectives of the project are related to the definition of the
scale of Internet communication and the structure of Internet content
consumption by Russian users; identifying specific political subjectivity of
the Internet communication participants; comparison of the data and the
specification of the relationship types and models of online
communication and political systems in different countries on this basis.
The main results (at the current stage of the project). The
relationships between consumption patterns of Internet content and
features of national mentality of the Russians, the English, the Chinese and
the Swedes are identified; the relationships between Internet
communication scales socio-political profiles of the Russian Internet users
are identified. Socio-political profiles of the young Russian Internet users,
including "potential precariat" (so-called “dangerous classes” are
determined.
Social computing. Basics, development technologies, social and humanitarian effects (ISC -15)
Fields of applications. Predicting the socio-political dynamics in Russia
and in the perspective in courtiers of post-Soviet space; improvement of
methods of comparative and typological analysis; integration of research
results in the educational area (within the MSPU’s master's programs
“Sociology of the Internet”, ”Russian Studies: Political Studies of Russia
and the former Soviet Union”, “Applied Political Science” and others.).
Project development prospects are related to the identification of
patterns of relationship of political systems and Internet communication,
modeling and forecasting of political processes in countries with different
levels of development of Internet communications and the types of
political regimes.
“Predictor Mining”
Project description. The Institute employees conduct research related
to the automatic detection of the features of behavior (patterns) among
users of electronic social networks (Vk.com, Twitter.com, Facebook.com,
etc.). On the basis of this the forecasting of prospective social and political
effects of involvement in Internet communications (such as political
protests, ethnic tensions, socio-economic and political crises) is possible.
The existing prototypes of the proposed approach can only detect the
current social network users’ attitude to a particular issue, while at the
same time, they do not provide for forecasting changes in user ratings. The
specifics of the research group is to use a set of Internet services, social
media monitoring, as well as authoring software to help you analyze
Internet content of estimated millions of user messages. The empirical
base of the study consists of such cases, as the “orange revolution”,
Social computing. Basics, development technologies, social and humanitarian effects (ISC -15)
the “Arab Spring”, protest activity in major Russian cities after the election
of deputies of the Russian Federation State Duma in 2011, “Euromaidan”
in Ukraine, protests in the US city of Ferguson etc.
The main objectives: identification of protest activity markers in the
digital environment; definition of the Internet users’ behavior features
(patterns), allowing to record the transition from the sphere of protest
activity online in real practice; development markers system of “opinion
leaders” selection and mobilization of facilities of protest activity in the
Internet space; forecasting growth of protest activity from digital traces.
The main results (at the current stage of the project). A method to
identify the “markers intensity” and “content markers” of protest activity
in the digital environment is developed; the “Protest Language Corpus” is
prepared; the “Dictionary of Protest Language Tonality” is complete
(«Sentiment analysis»); the technology of forming units of protest and
mobilization of protest activity in the Internet space are described.
Fields of applications. The behavior of users’ related accounts in
social networks prediction is a very urgent problem in terms of safety and
security, since such an analysis makes it possible to take a series of
preventive measures with the objectives to extinguish a growing social or
political conflict and to reduce the probability of an irreversible crisis of
legitimacy.
Project development prospects are data mining techniques to
automatically and mechanically form a set of specific indicators, which
reflect, for example, the views of users of social networks on various
issues, and then interpret the figures with the help of methods of social
computing and as a result, on the one hand, to develop theories and
Social computing. Basics, development technologies, social and humanitarian effects (ISC -15)
explanatory models of the social behavior dynamics, and on the other
hand, to prepare management solutions to influence the object under
study.
