In November, we mourned the loss of Gwen Ifill. She passed away of cancer at the all too young age of 61. You may have noticed that she had been missing from some broadcasts leading up to her passing. She fought

the cancer valiantly over the past year but succumbed in hospice surrounded by family and friends. We will forever miss Gwen. She was a passionate, articulate journalist who along with her friend Judy Woodruff became the first all women anchor team to lead a national news broadcast. Please join me in thinking of Gwen each time you see the quality journalism on PBS. She will forever be a part of it.

JUNE We solved vintage mysteries with Dancing on the Edge and Endeavour, and closed the case on an international mystery in The Tunnel. We brought home two local Emmy® Awards – one for KVIE Arts Showcase, and one for Yes! We’re Open.

JULY PBS NewsHour kept us on top of the political party conventions, and Mel, Sue, Paul, and Mary welcomed us into an English country tent for The Great British Baking Show when we needed a break from drama.

AUGUST Inspector Lewis solved three final murders. We met Tommy Kono, the local man who inspired Arnold Schwarzenegger with ViewFinder: Arnold Knows Me.

SEPTEMBER We celebrated local artists with the 35th Annual KVIE Art Auction. Ken Burns introduced us to two heroes of WWII with Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War.

OCTOBER We hosted a debate between Representative Ami Bera and Sheriff Scott Jones in their race to be the next representative for California’s 7th Congressional District. Lin-Manuel Miranda took us behind-the-scenes of Broadway’s biggest show with Hamilton’s America.

NOVEMBER Anne of Green Gables returned on Thanksgiving for family

fun. Soundbreaking took us inside the recording studio for a novel

look at music. Yes! We’re Open introduced a mother and daughter making teddy bears to memorialize lost loved ones.

DECEMBER Rob on the Road took us to the Sutter Buttes for

amazing vistas. Call the Midwife traveled to South Africa for a surprise trip,

and we reveled in music from across the decades and across the country.

What a year 2016 has been! Here’s a look back at some of the great programming we’ve enjoyed together and things we’ve accomplished. Thank you for watching with us. We can’t wait to share 2017 with you!

JANUARY We rang in 2016 with a new episode of Sherlock, which took us for a time loop with The Abominable Bride and left us with more questions. We met brave nurses, soldiers, and servants from the Civil War with the new drama Mercy Street, and welcomed the Crawley family and friends back for the final season of Downton Abbey.

FEBRUARY NOVA: Creatures of Light took us deep under the sea to meet luminescent fish. KVIE Arts Showcase helped us discover the healing power of art for those with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

MARCH We bid a fond farewell to Downton Abbey in the final, bittersweet episode. Local heroes big and small had their moment in the spotlight as Rob on the Road introduced us to people making a difference, and we visited the International Space Station with astronaut Scott Kelly for A Year In Space.

APRIL Ken Burns explored the life of Jackie Robinson, and we took a trip through “America’s Best Idea” with The National Parks.

MAY We proved that anyone can be a genius with the right tools with Genius by Stephen Hawking. Rob on the Road was our guide for a road trip down Highway 99.

Black Forest Gâteau

From the kitchen of The Great British Baking Show judge Mary Berry, the black forest gâteau is a mountain of chocolate, whipped cream, and black cherry decadence. Ingredients:6 large eggs5.5 oz caster or superfine sugar (about 3/4 cup)3.5 oz self-rising flour, sifted (about 3/4 cup)1.75 oz cocoa powder, sifted (about 1/2 cup)For filling and topping: 1 pint whipping cream1 lb., 2 oz (drained) black cherries in kirsch2 heaping tbsp. cornstarchFor decoration: Chocolate-covered cherries5 oz. white chocolate, 4 oz. semisweet chocolate

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Lightly grease two 9-inch cake tins and line the base with baking parchment.

2. Crack the eggs into a mixing bowl. Add sugar and whisk until mixture is thick enough to leave very soft peaks when the whisk is lifted out of the bowl. Carefully fold in the sifted flour and cocoa powder. Turn mixture into prepared cake tins.

3. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the sponges are beginning to shrink away from the sides of the tin. Turn out onto a wire rack to cool and remove parchment.

4. Make the filling. Drain the jars of cherries, reserving the juice. Chop the cherries roughly. Measure the cornstarch into a small saucepan, make a paste with a small amount of the reserved juice, then stir in the remaining juice. Place over medium heat and bring slowly to a boil, stirring until thickened, then simmer for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat, add the cherries, and leave to cool. Refrigerate until quite firm.

5. Whip the cream to soft peaks. Divide the cream in half, setting aside one half for the sides and top of the cake.

6. For the decoration, melt the white and plain chocolate. Spoon into 2 separate disposable piping bags. Pipe 12 (plus a few spare in case they break) chocolate tree shapes onto non-stick parchment. Leave to harden and set.

7. Cut each sponge into two layers using a long sharp knife. Divide the cherry mixture into thirds. Spread one third of the cherry mix over the sliced sponge. Divide one half of the cream into thirds and spread one third over the cherry mix. Top with another sponge and continue layering. Top with final sponge layer.

8. Spread remaining whipped cream around the sides of the cake. Press chocolate trees into the cake's sides. Mary Berry recommends topping this cake with chocolate-covered cherries; we topped ours with fresh blackberries and raspberries.
