Success is not only possible at the Rawls College of Business; it’s expected. To focus our efforts

to become a top-tier business school, we launched our Rawls LEADER 2020 Strategic Plan in

August 2013. Our goal for 2020 is ambitious — to be among the top 50 business schools in the

United States. After only one year, I am pleased to announce that we have made progressive

strides to not only reach our goals, but to exceed them.

In 2013-14, the Rawls College was ranked as one of the top 100 undergraduate business schools

by both Bloomberg Businessweek and U.S. News & World Report, a best graduate business school

by both U.S. News & World Report and College Atlas, and a top school for veterans. Our Master of

Science in Accounting Program was ranked in the top 10 nationally, as well. In addition to our rise

in the rankings, the launch of the Rawls Business Leadership Program enabled us to recruit some

of the best and brightest business students. We also cannot overlook the generous support from

our alumni and friends who were instrumental in our efforts to exceed our development goals.

These efforts and accomplishments not only showcase our achievements, but also illustrate our

commitment to our vision for Rawls in 2020. I invite you to follow our progress and learn more

about how the Rawls College is creating the next generation of leaders.

The Rawls College is committed to recruiting and developing the next generation of thought leaders. In 2013, the Rawls College launched the Rawls

Business Leadership Program, a dynamic learning experience designed to provide students with real-world knowledge and experiences to excel in leadership

roles. The program focuses on developing the “complete student,” a student who possesses both a strong academic foundation and real-world experience

necessary to be an innovative and ethical leader. The four elements of the program include experiential living and learning opportunities, real-world application,

international experience, and interactive personal development with a designated professional mentor. While this program is not an independent major, it

is designed to enhance a student’s learning experience at the Rawls College by providing students the opportunity to participate in action-based leadership

activities applicable to all business majors.

Rawls Business Leaders learn invaluable teamwork skills through experiential learning activities.

Students in the Rawls Business Leadership Program have the unique opportunity to live in an on-campus learning community just steps away from the college.

Rawls alumni are enthusiastically supporting the new program, both financially and as professional mentors.

At the Rawls College of Business, we strive to develop our students so they excel academically and garner the real-world experience needed to be a successful leader.”

It’s a prestigious honor to be involved with the Rawls

Business Leadership Program. These students

are preparing themselves to be the next great leaders

entering the professional world. This program

enables our students to get more from their education

and strengthen their business skills by participating

in active learning outside of the classroom.

Taking Accounting Education to the Next LevelFirst Separately-accredited School of Accounting in Texas

In support of the efforts outlined in the Rawls LEADER 2020 Strategic Plan, the Rawls College of Business established the first separately-accredited

School of Accounting in Texas in 2013. The School of Accounting is one of only about 40 such schools nationwide and is one of only 168 programs in

the U.S. that is separately accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The rigorous accreditation standards

require a focus on continuous improvement through an emphasis on 360-degree assessment of inputs to and outcomes of the Accounting program.

Students in the School of Accounting can be assured that they are receiving instruction that is current, relevant and supported by cutting-edge

research conducted by faculty who are experts in their field. In 2013, the School of Accounting recruited experts like associate professor Gary

Fleischman, Ph.D. and CPA, who teaches energy accounting and associate professor Juan Manuel Sanchez, Ph.D., who is actively participating

in the Rawls College big data initiative. Graduates of the flagship 150-hour program are recruited by the top firms in the accounting profession with

opportunities to begin their careers in a variety of offices both nationally and internationally. Placement rates from the 150-hour program have

been at or near 100 percent for the past 25 years.

In the last three years, the School of Accounting at the Rawls College of Business has

been recognized as a Top 50 Accounting Program in the Public Accounting Report;

the tax program has been ranked as a Top 20 research program in the Brigham Young

University rankings; and now the M.S.A. program has been ranked as one of the

10 best accounting programs in the nation by tax recruiters. When you bring great

students together with outstanding faculty, the result is a world-class program.

We are proud of the accomplishments of our alumni, our faculty and our student body,

and we expect even better things to come.

To address an ever-growing need for leaders in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields, the Rawls College of Business created a

new STEM MBA program focused on the competencies STEM students need to advance in their careers. As a general business master’s degree with an emphasis

on STEM applications, the program complements STEM students’ technical background while also providing the business skills necessary to be successful

in management and leadership roles. Courses include Accounting, Finance, Economics, Law, Marketing, Management, Statistics and Strategy, along with

STEM-specific electives. The one-year program is designed to help STEM students increase their marketability and gain the leadership and insights needed in

the business world. The Rawls program is the first offered in Texas and one of only a few in the country.

This innovative degree plan allows Rawls to leverage one of the greatest assets of Texas Tech, our vast access to academic resources. Texas Tech is an integrated,

comprehensive research university with highly-regarded academic programs located on one physical campus enabling our faculty thought leaders in business to be

surrounded by top faculty and students from other disciplines on campus. Our faculty members are well-suited to teach STEM-trained students on how to translate

their primary education in STEM to business success — both within an organization or as an entrepreneur.”

The STEM MBA degree provides business skills to those who plan

to pursue management careers in STEM professions. The STEM

MBA differs from a traditional MBA in two ways. First, classes in

the program utilize STEM-related examples and cases. Second,

the electives in the program are unique to STEM professions. For

example, the commercialization course provides details on how

products developed in science and engineering professions are

marketed and delivered to consumers.

The Rawls College works closely with industry leaders to ensure Rawls graduates are successful in the workplace. Offering a Certificate in Energy is

another example of how Rawls responds to industry needs. The energy industry requires graduates who are not only knowledgeable about their area of

business expertise, but who also understand the energy industry. The Certificate in Energy prepares undergraduate students who are in non-energy related

majors with the skill set required to enter and thrive in the energy industry. “Energy is the biggest, most multi-disciplinary business in the world,” explains

Terry McInturff; Area Coordinator; Energy, Economics and Law. “While our Energy Commerce major targets the oil and gas exploration phase, our Certificate

in Energy is designed to provide Accounting, Finance, Management, Marketing, and Management Information Systems majors an energy education

component. The Certificate in Energy provides our students with the skills to succeed as energy traders, supply chain and big data managers, energy

tax and accounting specialists, and transportation and logistics professionals.” Recent graduates with a Certificate in Energy have been placed

at world-renowned energy companies such as ConocoPhillips, National Oilwell Varco and Marathon Oil.

The Certificate in Energy helped me obtain my job at

ConocoPhillips. Lots of people coming out of college with

a Finance degree know about the financial side of the

business, but not everyone knows about oil and gas leases

or the economics of the industry.

— Brennan Moore, Financial Analyst, ConocoPhillips, Bartlesville, Oklahoma

“ “An Accounting degree was essential for the job, but the Certificate in Energy

gave me a competitive advantage in the industry and helped separate me

from other applicants.”

The Rawls College continuously reviews and adapts its undergraduate and graduate curricula to reflect current industry trends, such as establishing

new areas of specialization at the undergraduate level to include a Human Resource Management concentration and a Business Analysis track.

Additionally, the Rawls College adapted its MBA for Working Professionals curriculum to better meet the needs of working business professionals

wishing to pursue an advanced degree.

Business Analysis TrackOver the past several years, the need for business analysts in many companies has increased dramatically. While the job of business analyst has been

around for decades, it was usually conducted by professionals who were systems analysts, project managers or subject matter specialists; however, the

skills employed by these professionals did not quite match industry standards. Business analysts understand business problems and opportunities

in the context of the requirements and recommend solutions that enable the organization to achieve its goals. To help address the rapidly-growing

industry need for business analysts, the Rawls College of Business is implementing a Business Analysis Track for students majoring in Management

Information Systems.

Adapting to an Ever-changing Climate Rawls Develops Emerging Industry Leaders

The new MIS track in Business Analysis distinguishes the Rawls College of Business

by becoming one of the few colleges to recognize and respond to the evolution of this

important profession. The increasing need in industry for the Business Analyst role is the

force behind this evolution. The Business Analyst role is about providing the coordination

and liaison to bring about positive change in business organizations. This track is

specifically designed to help MIS professionals excel by adding value to organizations by

solving business problems and creating new business opportunities.

Human Resource Management Concentration Employment opportunities for human resource positions are expected to grow significantly. With an aging workforce, globalization and evolving technology,

more companies and nonprofits are turning to HR managers who can help them think strategically about their recruiting, hiring, training and retention

practices. Recent industry trends have shown that graduates with at least a bachelor’s degree have the best prospects, and those with certifications

or experience will also have better outcomes in the job market. The Rawls College of Business recognizes this need for a competitive advantage and

specialization within the growing HR field. Because of this, the Area of Management is implementing a new Human Resource Management (HRM)

concentration for management students. Courses in the HRM concentration, augmented by additional management and business courses, prepare the

student for a wide variety of career paths. The HRM concentration offers students the opportunity to learn the principles of effectively planning, organizing

and leading organizations, in order to serve the business industry in developing the leadership skills of organizations, working with people, and solving

both qualitative and quantitative problems.

MBA for Working ProfessionalsThe Rawls College of Business MBA for Working Professionals program is designed for managers and professionals who wish to remain fully employed

while also achieving a graduate degree. This program builds on students’ practical skills with the appropriate theories and strategic thinking needed to

bolster their success in the professional world. As a working professional, however, the time needed for graduate school may not be readily available. To

address this need, the Rawls College of Business offers an MBA for Working Professionals program strategically designed to allow students to maximize

their learning in a hybrid course format. The degree can be completed in two years, and students can choose to take coursework on the weekend or

during week-long classes in August and January.

Human Resource Management focuses on developing human capital in organizations.

Graduates are expected to meet the rapidly growing demand for HR professionals by

joining businesses in a wide variety of industries. The concentration is a great complement

to the programs already offered in the Rawls College of Business, and it supports the

strategic vision of becoming an internationally recognized leader in business education.

— Elizabeth Karam, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Management

This unique program affords students the flexibility of learning from a distance, but

this is matched with residency on campus. The program allows students the ability to

form relationships with other students, enhance their networks, and learn from both each

other and the faculty. The MBA for Working Professionals is a great teaching and learning

experience as the students engage in active learning that brings the material to life and is

supplemented by the students’ work experience.
