The Baycrest Innovation, Technology and Design Lab requires an Innovation Cart – a mobile design unit. Due to staff time constraints and client mobility challenges, the facilitators hold sessions all over the Baycrest campus. This requires them to carry their materials and tools to each workshop. The proposed mobile design unit needs to be able to travel across campus, maneuvering indoors and outdoors as it is transported from building to building. It must be lightweight so that it can be used by a single operant, durable and easily sanitized. It must have storage for various materials – including mapping and ideation tools, simple prototyping materials and a method by which to capture audio, video and/or still images of the meetings. Furthermore, it must have an inviting design that will facilitate collaboration, idea generation and provide work and presentation space. This project will be realized by James Agostinho, Liz Durden, and Domenic Violante, and will be completed December 15th, 2016. With this project, we intend to create an Innovation Cart as a moveable extension of the Innovation Lab. The cart will act as a mobile design unit, containing innovation tools that the design team can use while holding workshops in various environments around the Baycrest campus. The tools in the Innovation Cart will be used by the Innovation Lab design team, who will help the users (clients, clinicians and other Baycrest staff) to run through design exercises such as empathy maps and IDEO Human-Centered Design Thinking processes.

It must be lightweightso that it can be used by a single operant, durable and easily sanitized.

Page 2: PROJECT 2A - BAYCREST INNOVATION CART DESIGN BRIEF … · the design team can use while holding workshops in various environments around the Baycrest campus. The tools in the Innovation

With this project, we’re addressing the mobility concerns of the Innovation Lab team. By providing them with a mobile design unit, they will have the tools they need to hold design workshops all over the Baycrest campus, and gain insight from a variety of users – Baycrest clients (older adults), clinicians and staff.

By holding in-situ workshops, the designers can gather information on the environment as well as valuable insight from busy Subject Matter Experts and older adults, and the insight these users can provide will aid the design team in finding solutions to complex hospitals in the Baycrest environment. Furthermore, the designers can inform the SMEs and older adults about the benefits of innovation and design thinking.

Ideally, the Innovation Cart would help facilitate relationships and connections between the Innovation Lab designers and other members of the Baycrest community – clients, clinicians and other hospital staff. The designers will have the tools they need to gather valuable information, and with this information they can find solutions to design problems facing Baycrest – benefitting everyone in this community.

The end result of this product will be a mobile Innovation Cart to be used by various populations at Baycrest – primarily by the Innovation Lab designers. Using the Innovation Cart to hold in-situ workshops will save time for the busy SMEs and enable older adults with mobility issues to participate and provide their valuable insight. It will also mean providing education to these populations about the value of design thinking. The result of these workshops will be greater insight for the designers in their quest for innovation at Baycrest.

Page 3: PROJECT 2A - BAYCREST INNOVATION CART DESIGN BRIEF … · the design team can use while holding workshops in various environments around the Baycrest campus. The tools in the Innovation

What must the project fulfill/do/achieve/generate?

DESIGN OBJECTIVES• be durable• be easily sanitized• be mobile• be maneuverable by one person • all-terrain wheels with brakes• storage for materials – large paper sketch pads, permanent

markers, drawing tools, whiteboard markers and eraser, 5 colours of stickies, 8.5x11 or 11x17 paper pads, glue sticks clipboards/writing surfaces, prototyping tools

• have whiteboard space• have secure storage space for a camera/video camera/ipad• fit in an elevator and through all Baycrest doors

What should the project fulfill/do/achieve/generate?

• help the Innovation Team build positive relationships with other users

• be quiet • have vertical and horizontal surfaces (exhibition area

24x36” and poster area 11x17”)• have presentation space• have round top for collaboration• have a cup holder for coffee• be lightweight

What could the project fulfill/do/achieve/generate?

• have built-in speakers and a projector• encourage participation• have an inviting appearance • be iterative (generate improvement ideas for itself)

We feel that if our final design meets all must and should criteria, and possibly the should criteria, the desired outcome will have been achieved.

USER SCENARIOSJourney Map

ENTICE

Ana packs up her materials from the Innovation Lab and heads to meet Dr. Jay. He has a meeting in 40 minutes so she must be on time!

Scenario 1: Dr. Jay

ENTER

Ana arrives at Dr. Jay’s office. Her hands are full and she has nowhere to put down her things.

Page 5: PROJECT 2A - BAYCREST INNOVATION CART DESIGN BRIEF … · the design team can use while holding workshops in various environments around the Baycrest campus. The tools in the Innovation

Unfortunately, their time is up and Dr. Jay is off to his next appointment.

ENGAGE

Before they start, Ana spends 20 minutes explaining the value of the session. She had posters to show but nowhere to put them up.

EXIT

EXTEND

Ana heads back to the lab with her materials. She has to catalogue what she learned from her meeting with Dr. Jay.

Page 6: PROJECT 2A - BAYCREST INNOVATION CART DESIGN BRIEF … · the design team can use while holding workshops in various environments around the Baycrest campus. The tools in the Innovation

It’s busy at the nurses station so making space for everyone to engage is difficult.

Scenario 2: Nurses Station

ENTER

ENTICE

Ana’s off to a meeting with the nurses. She doesn’t know what she’ll need, so she takes everything.

There is not enough room for everyone to be involved.

ENGAGE

Page 7: PROJECT 2A - BAYCREST INNOVATION CART DESIGN BRIEF … · the design team can use while holding workshops in various environments around the Baycrest campus. The tools in the Innovation

Heading back to the Innovation Lab after a productive session. Carrying all this stuff around can be a lot of work.

Finally, everyone is starting to engage, but there’s no way for Ana to record all this information!

Ana has a meeting with Debbie and her family.

Scenario 3: Client - Debbie

Page 8: PROJECT 2A - BAYCREST INNOVATION CART DESIGN BRIEF … · the design team can use while holding workshops in various environments around the Baycrest campus. The tools in the Innovation

Since there is no table to set up on, Ana tacks her tri-fold board to the wall.

ENTER

Debbie and her family seem put-off by the entire situation. Ana is feeling some tension in the room.

Debbie is having trouble standing. Unfortunately that means the end of her contribution for today.
