Project: Keep in Mind• We will be using geolocation markers.

This may impact your project choice.• Location detection inside buildings may

not work.• Keep images/models small.• Consider content density. There should

be sufficient content in an area to keep your user interested.

Project: Keep in Mind

• Integrate actions and animations where it makes sense.

• Make it worth your users' time.• Make it worth your time.

Layar

• Is an augmented reality browser, not an app dedicated to a specific content set

• Merges the picture captured by your device’s camera with computer-generated graphics

Some Other AR Browsers

• Wikitude – http://www.wikitude.com• Junaio – http://www.junaio.com• Argon – http://argon.gatech.edu

Layar

• Organizes content in “layers”

• Each layer consists of several pieces of content that have been associated with a specific geographic location (a Point of Interest, or POI)

To make Layar work…

… you need:• Layar app on your mobile device• The Layar server• A data store and provider (we use a

local, modified version of the PorPOISe open source project)

How Does Layar Work?

How Does Layar Work?

1. A user launches Layar Reality Browser on a supported mobile device.

2. Layar Client will send a request to the Layar Server.

3. Based on the request, the Layar Server will retrieve layer definitions from the publishing website.

How Does Layar Work?

4. A list of retrieved layers will be sent by the Layar Server and displayed on the Layar Client.

5. The user launches a layer from this list

6. A getPOIs request is sent to the Layar Server.

How Does Layar Work?

7. The Layar Server forwards the Layer Service Provider of that layer.

8. The Layer Service Provider returns AR content based on the Developer API (getPOIs response) back to the Layar Server.

How Does Layar Work?

9. The Layar Server validates the getPOIs response and sends it back to the Layar Client.

10. The Layar Client displays the getPOIs response nicely to the User.

How Does Layar Work?

• App uses:• GPS and/or cell/wi-fi triangulation to determine

location

• Compass to determine the direction in which you are pointing your device

• Gyroscope to determine if you are pointing it up, straight or down

• Based on this information, the app calculates the correct position and orientation of digital objects on the screen

The IKBLC Library Channel

• Channel can be accessed by searching for title, keyword or publisher.

• Channels in immediate vicinity are displayed.

• Providing the URL link will prompt user to download Layar if necessary.

• QR codes can also be used to link to channel.
