1.0 INTRODUCTION
At the request of Tie Down Engineering, Inc., Philip Witherington, P.E. witnessed field-testing of the model - 59097 60" ground anchor with 4" double helix discs. The groundanchor was tested in accordance with the Federal Manufactured Home Constructionand Safety Standards (The Standards). The objective of the tests was to determine theanchorage capacity of the ground anchors would withstand the imposed loads as setforth in The Standards.
2.0 GROUNDANCHORDESCRIPTION
The model 59097 ground anchor is a 60" long by %" diameter steel ground anchorgrade 36 with two 4" helix discs located near the bottom of the anchor. The anchor istopped off with a steel U-shaped head welded to the vertical anchor. This headcontains two bolt holes on each vertical face of the "u" to accommodate the bolt(s)required to secure a steel tie down strap to the ground anchor.
3.0 SITE DESCRIPTION
Testing was per Testing was performed in an open grass area across from Tie DownEngineering Inc.'s. production facility in Atlanta, Georgia on August 27,2004. The testsite consisted of primarily clayey soil of varying conditions and soil classifications. Thesoil sampled for this anchor was a 500 ft.-lb. Class 2 soil. Due to considerable rain froma couple of days before, soil conditions were wet, but not muddy
4.0 GROUNDANCHOR INSTALLATION
Three anchors were installed vertically into the ground up to a bottom portion of the U-shaped bracket on top. Each anchor was installed several feet apart from each other soas to not impactthe soil characteristicsof the adjacentanchor .
5.0 TESTSETUP
Each ground anchor was installed so that the head of each anchor wouldline up with awell-established tree located about 20' away. The tree had a diameter at the trunk nearwhere the cable was wrapped of roughly 18" in diameter; therefore, no yielding of thetree would occur during testing. A chain was wrapped around the tree and fed througha come-along winch, which was used to apply the test loads. A steel cable linked thewinch to dynamometer. The dynamometer was fastened to the top of a vertical steeltube. The steel tube was bolted to a steel plate on the ground via a pinned connection.A steel cable was connected with one end secured to the top of the steel tube, and theother end fastened to the ground anchor. The steel cable between the top of the steel

tube and the ground anchor was positioned at a 45-degree angle above the horizontal.See Appendix 0 for a picture of the test apparatus.
6.0 MEASUREMENTS
Both horizontal and vertical measurements were recorded by placing a 2x8 piece ofwood' adjacent to the ground anchor. Horizontal measurements were recorded bymeasuring the difference in separation between the board and the anchor between theunloaded condition, and the loaded condition. Vertical measurements were recorded atthe center of the anchor in relation to the top of the 2x8. Horizontal displacementsgreater than 3" and vertical displacements greater than 2" were considered failure.
7.0 TEST LOADS
Test loads were applied via winch in 500-pound increments. Displacements weremeasured at each load increment. Each load increment was held for a minimum 5-second duration before increasing the load to the next increment. Each ground anchorwas loaded up to 4,725-pounds according to the dynamometer. The positioning of thedynamometer actually yielded stronger loads on the ground anchor than intended.Rather than the 45-degree cable experiencing a 4,725 maximum load as indicated onthe dynamometer, the cable actually experienced an ultimate load of 6,680-pounds.
8.0 TEST RESULTS
All three ground anchors fell within acceptance criteria. Test number 1 yielded a 3"horizontal displacement with a 1" vertical displacement. Test number 2 yielded a 2-1/8"horizontal displacement with a 9/16" vertical displacement. Test number 3 yielded a 3"horizontal displacement with a 1-114"vertical displacement. Since the test loads were'actually 40%. greater than required, it is safe to conclude that the ground anchors fell
. well within the acceptance criteria~
9.0 CONCLUSIONS"
Testing has proved the model 59097 anchors to withstand and exceed the 4725-pound.ultimate loading of the ground anchors with the load being applied at a 45-degree angleabove the horizontal

10.0 CONDITIONS
The results of this test are limited to the following conditions:
· Vertical design load of 3,150-pounds· Vertical ultimate load of 4,725-pounds· Horizontal design load of 3,150-pounds· Horizontal ultimate load of 4,725-pounds· Anchor strapping within 40-50 degrees above the horizontal
· Soil conditions which allow for ground anchor to be instal/ed completely
