Introduction to
Volkswagen
Volkswagen (abbreviated VW) is a German automobile manufacturer and
the original and biggest-selling marquee of the Volkswagen Group, which now also owns
the Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, SEAT, 49.9% of Porsche, and Skoda marquees
and the truck manufacturer Scania.
Volkswagen means "people's car" in German, in which it is pronounced. Its current
tagline or slogan is Das Auto (The Car).

History of
Volkswagen
The First Car of Volkswagen Das Auto.
When in 1937 the company known as "Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des
Deutschen Volkswagens mbH" was founded, no one could have guessed that it would
one day be Europe's largest carmaker. The history of the company - with all its trials andtribulations - is first and foremost a story of impressive success.
On May 28th, 1937 the "Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen
Volkswagens mbH" company is founded, and on September 16th, 1938 it is renamed
"Volkswagenwerk GmbH". In early 1938, in what is today Wolfsburg, work begins on

construction of the Volkswagenwerk plant which is to house production of the new
vehicle designed by Ferdinand Porsche.
Volkswagen was originally founded in 1937 by the Nazi trade union, the German
Labour Front. In the early 1930s German auto industry was still largely composed of
luxury models, and the average German rarely could afford anything more than a
motorcycle. As a result only one German out of 50 owned a car. Seeking a potential new
market, some car makers began independent "peoples' car" projects Mercedes' 170H,
Adler's AutoBahn, Steyr 55, Hanomag 1,3L, among others.
By 1946 the factory was producing 1,000 cars a month, a
remarkable feat considering it was still in disrepair. Owing to roof and window damage,
rain stopped production and new vehicles were bartered for steel required for more
production.
The car and its town changed their Second World War-era names to
"Volkswagen" and "Wolfsburg" respectively, and production was increasing. It was still
unclear what was to become of the factory. It was offered to representatives from the
British, American and French motor industries. Famously, all rejected it. After an
inspection of the plant, Sir William Rootes, head of the British Rootes Group, told Hirst
the project would fail within two years, and that the car "is quite unattractive to the
average motorcar buyer, is too ugly and too noisy If you think you're going to build
cars in this place, you're a bloody fool, young man".[citation needed] In an ironic twist of
fate, Volkswagen would manufacture a locally built version of Rootes's Hillman Avenger
in Argentina in the 1980s, long after Rootes had gone bankrupt at the hands of Chrysler
in 1978the Beetle outliving the Avenger by over 30 years.
Volkswagens were first exhibited and sold in the United States in 1949, but only
sold two units in America that first year. On its entry to the U.S. market, the VW was
7/29/2019 Project on Volkswagen DMK

briefly sold as a "Victory Wagon". Volkswagen of America was formed in April 1955 to
standardise sales and service in the United States. Production of the Type 1 Volkswagen
Beetle increased dramatically over the years, the total reaching one million in 1955.
Volkswagens in Canada VW Canada ordered their first cars
on 10 July 1952. (Shipping order 143075) The order consisted of 12 vehicles, (3) model
11C, a black, green, and sand color (3) 11GS, a chestnut brown and two azure blue, (2)
24A-M51 in red, (1)21A in blue, (1) 23A in blue, (1) 22A beige color, and one Ambulance.
Volkswagen Products were seen in Canada for the first time at
the Canadian National Exhibition in August 1952 and were accepted enthusiastically.
The first shipment of cars reached Toronto in December 1952. By 1955 sales were on a
basis that warranted the building of the fine Volkswagen plant on a 32-acre (130,000m2) site on Scarboro's Golden Mile. To this, a 60,000-square-foot (5,600 m2) building
with administration, showrooms, service, repairs and parts, an addition of 60,000-
square-foot (5,600 m2) was built in 1957, with storage for $4,000,000 of parts.
Sales soaredthanks in part to the famous advertising campaigns by New York
advertising agency Doyle, Dane Bernbach. Led by art director Helmut Krone, and
copywriters Julian Koenig and Bob Levinson, Volkswagen advertisements became as
popular as the car, using crisp layouts and witty copy to lure the younger, sophisticated
consumers with whom the car became associated. Even though it was almost
universally known as the Beetle (or the Bug), it was never officially labelled as such by
the manufacturer, instead referred to as the Type 1. The first reference to the name
7/29/2019 Project on Volkswagen DMK
8/44
Beetle occurred in U.S. advertising in 1968, but not until 1998 and the Golf-based New
Beetle would the name be adopted by Volkswagen.[dubious discuss]
Although the car was becoming outdated, during the 1960s and early 1970s,
American exports, innovative advertising, and a growing reputation for reliability helpedproduction figures surpass the levels of the previous record holder, the Ford Model T.
On 17 February 1972 the 15,007,034th Beetle was sold. Volkswagen could now claim
the world production record for the most-produced, single make of car in history. By
1973, total production was over 16 million.
To commemorate its passing the Ford Model T's record
sales mark and its victories in the Baja 1000 Mexican races from 1967 to 1971,
Volkswagen produced its first limited-edition Beetle. It was marketed as the Baja
Champion in the United States and the "Marathon" Super beetle in the rest of the
world. It featured unique "Marathon Blau" metallic blue paint, steel-pressed 10-spoke
15-inch (38 cm) magnesium-alloy wheels, a commemorative metal plate mounted on
the glove box and a certificate of authenticity presented to the original purchaser.
Dealer-installed options for this limited-edition Super beetle included the following:
white stripes running the length of the rocker-panel, a special shifter knob, bumper over
riders, tapered exhaust tips, fake walnut inserts in the dashboard (behind the steering
wheel and the glovebox cover) as well as Bosch fog lights mounted on the front bumper.

VW expanded its product line in 1961 with the introduction of four Type 3
models (Karmann Ghia, Notchback, Squareback) based on the new Type 3 mechanical
underpinnings, and again in 1969 with the larger Type 4 (411 and 412) models. These
differed substantially from previous vehicles, with the notable introduction of
monocoque/unibody construction, the option of a fully automatic transmission,
electronic fuel injection, and a sturdier powerplant. Volkswagen added a "Super Beetle"(the Type 113) to its lineup in 1971. The Type 113 differed from the standard Beetle in
its use of a MacPherson strut front suspension instead of the usual torsion bars. Also the
nose of the car was stretched 2 inches (51 mm) to allow the spare tire to lie flat, and the
combination of these two features significantly increased the usable front luggage
space. Despite the Super Beetle's (marketed outside North America as the VW 1302,
later 1303) popularity with Volkswagen customers, purists preferred the standard
Beetle with its less pronounced nose and its original torsion bar suspension. In 1973,
Volkswagen introduced the military-themed Type 181, or "Trekker" in Europe, "Thing" in
America, recalling the wartime Type 82. The military version was produced for the
NATO-era German Army during the Cold War years of 1970 to 1979. The US Thing
version only sold for two years, 1973 and 1974, thanks at least in part to Ralph Nader's
automobile safety campaigns.
In 1964, Volkswagen succeeded in purchasing Auto Union, and in 1969, NSU
Motorenwerke AG (NSU). The former company owned the historic Audi brand, which
had disappeared after the Second World War. VW ultimately merged Auto Union and
NSU to create the modern day Audi Company, and would go on to develop it as its
luxury vehicle marquee. However, the purchase of Auto Union and NSU proved to be a
pivotal point in Volkswagen's history, as both companies yielded the technological
expertise that proved necessary for VW to survive when demand for its air-cooled
models went into terminal decline as the 1970s dawned.
Volkswagen Passat (19731977 model)
Volkswagen was in serious trouble by 1973. The Type 3 and Type 4 models had
sold in much smaller numbers than the Beetle and the NSU-based K70 also failed to woo
7/29/2019 Project on Volkswagen DMK
10/44
buyers. Beetle sales had started to decline rapidly in European and North American
markets. The company knew that Beetle production had to end one day, but the
conundrum of replacing it had been a never-ending nightmare. VW's ownership of Audi
/ Auto Union proved to be the key to the solution with its expertise in front-wheel
drive, and water-cooled engines which Volkswagen so desperately needed to produce a
credible Beetle successor. Audi influences paved the way for this new generation ofVolkswagens, known as the Passat, Scirocco, Golf and Polo.
First in the series was the Volkswagen Passat (Dasher in the U.S.), introduced in
1973, a fastback version of the Audi 80, using many identical body and mechanical
parts. Estate/wagon versions were available in many markets. In Europe, the
estate/wagon version dominated in market share for many years.
In spring 1974, the Scirocco followed. The coupe was
designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. Based on the platform of the not yet released Golf, it
was built at Karmann due to capacity constraints at Volkswagen.
7/29/2019 Project on Volkswagen DMK
11/44
The pivotal model emerged as the Volkswagen Golf in1974, marketed in the United States and Canada as the Rabbit for the 1st generation
(19751985) and 5th generation (20062009). Its angular styling was designed by the
Italian Giorgetto Giugiaro). Its design followed trends for small family cars set by the
1959 Mini the Golf had a transversely mounted, water-cooled engine in the front,
driving the front wheels, and had a hatchback, a format that has dominated the market
segment ever since. Beetle production at Wolfsburg ended upon the Golf's introduction.
It continued in smaller numbers at other German factories (Hanover and Emden) until1978, but mainstream production shifted to Brazil and Mexico.
In 1975, theVolkswagen Polo followed. It was a re-badgedAudi 50, which was soon discontinued in 1978. The Polo became the base of the
Volkswagen Derby, which was introduced 1977. The Derby was for all intents and
purposes a three-box design of the Polo. After a second model generation, the Derby
was discontinued in 1985.
Passat, Scirocco, Golf and Polo shared many character defining features, as wellas parts and engines. They built the basis for Volkswagen's turn-around.
While Volkswagen's range of cars soon became similar to that of other large
European automakers, the Golf has been the mainstay of the Volkswagen lineup since
its introduction, and the mechanical basis for several other cars of the company. There
have been six generations of the Volkswagen Golf, the first of which was produced from
the summer of 1974 until the end of 1983 (sold as the Rabbit in the United States and
7/29/2019 Project on Volkswagen DMK

Canada and as the Caribe in Latin America). Its chassis also spawned the Volkswagen
Scirocco sport coupe, Volkswagen Jetta saloon/sedan, Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet
convertible, and Volkswagen Caddy pick-up.
Volkswagen had entered the supermini market in 1975
with the Volkswagen Polo, a stylish and spacious three-door hatchback designed by
Bertone. It was a strong seller in West Germany and most of the rest of Western
Europe, being one of the first foreign small cars to prove popular in Britain. The second-
generation model, launched in 1981 and sold as a hatchback and "coupe" (with the
hatchback resembling a small estate car and the coupe being similar to a conventional
hatchback), was an even greater success for Volkswagen. It was face-lifted in 1990 and
was still selling well after 13 years, when it was replaced by the third-generation Polo in
1994.

Volkswagen Group India is a part of Volkswagen AG, which isglobally represented by 9 brands- Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini,Scania, Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and VolkswagenPassenger Cars.
The product range extends from low-consumption small cars to luxury class
vehicles and trucks. The Group operates 60 production plants around the world. In
total more than 370,000 employees produce more than 26,600 vehicles or are
involved in vehicle-related services each working day.
The highest volume brand of the Group is Volkswagen. Europes most successful
car brand has made successful inroads into the Indian market. Volkswagen presents
itself in a variety of segments as a premium manufacturer of high-volume models. As a
first step, the Volkswagen brand launched the globally successful Passat in 2007. To
expand its portfolio and cater to the mid segment, Volkswagen launched one of the
brands bestselling models, the Jetta, in India in July 2008. Both the sedans are being
assembled locally. The iconic New Beetle and the high-end SUV Touareg were
introduced in December 2009. Also available is the high-end automobile Phaeton.
From December 12, 2009 the new Pune plant has started rolling-out the hatchback
version of the Volkswagen Polo. The made-in-India Polo was presented to the general
public for the very first time at the Auto Expo 2010. The launch of this premium
hatchback in March, brought access to one of the Indian passenger car segments with
the highest-volume unit sales.

Skoda entered the Indian market in 2001. Its plant in Aurangabad, which
assembles a total of eight models including the Audi A6 and Audi A4 as well as the
Volkswagen Passat and Volkswagen Jetta, has been instrumental in this achievement.
For Indian customers, the name of Skoda stands for high-quality, robust yet
affordable cars in the compact, lower mid-size and mid-size ranges. In terms of models,
the Skoda product offering in India ranges from the Fabia through the Octavia, the Laura
to the Superb. Skoda lifted the veil off its international bestseller SUV Yeti for the first
time in India at the Auto Expo 2010.
Audi offers high-end models of interest to Indian customers. With the
A8 and the Q7, the A6, the A4 and not forgetting the R8, the TT and the recently
introduced Q5, Audi offers top-quality, technically brilliant cars with an exclusive flair in
the relevant luxury segments. Audis positioning as a leading manufacturer of such high-
class vehicles, both assembled in India and imported through Audi India, will be
systematically pursued in future. At Auto Expo 2010, Audi also unveiled the Audi Sport
back Concept a five-door model offering a glimpse into Audi's future design
vocabulary.
Recognizing the importance of an extensive dealer network towards scripting a
long-term success story, the brands of the Volkswagen Group are setting up dealerships
spanning the entire country with Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi having in total around
120 dealerships across the country today. They are not only laying the foundation for a
7/29/2019 Project on Volkswagen DMK
16/44
substantial increase in sales but also doing the groundwork for offering a first-class all-
round service, taking customer satisfaction to the highest level. Keeping this in mind
they launched their first Group Logistics Service facility recently that would help make
their dealer network become more efficient and smoothen the entire process of service.
In the period between January 2009 and December 2009, the three brands of the
Volkswagen Group have together sold around 19,000 vehicles in India, an increase of1.4% over 2008 in a year marked by recession in the auto industry.
A crucial element of the Volkswagens strategy is to establish a long-term
presence in India is the Groups production facility near Pune in the Chakan Industrial
Park. The investment with a total sum of around INR 3,800 crore (580 million Euros) isthe biggest investment of a German company realized in India so far. The plant, one of
the most modern in the Volkswagen Group has a high level of vertical integration not
least attributable to the high share of local suppliers. The recruitment is of some 2,500
employees at the end of 2010, primarily from the region itself. With the investment, the
vertical integration of suppliers and the employment of people Volkswagen will thus
demonstrate its commitment to the new site. Simultaneously Volkswagen contributes to
a positive development of the economy of the region and of Maharashtra at the sametime.
The new plant was inaugurated by The Honourable Governor of Maharashtra, His
Excellency Shri. S. C. Jamir, and Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann, Member of the Board of
Management of VolkswagenAktiengesellschaftwith responsibility for Group
Production end of March 2009 and has begun building the Skoda Fabia compact car in
May 2009. The launch of Polo, the hatchback car, is a visible testimony to Volkswagens
vision of Mobility - Made in India. By mid of 2010 the hatchback version will be
followed by a sedan, also based on the new generation of the Polo but entirely different
to the hatch.

Volkswagen Manufacturing Unit in
Pune, Maharashtra
The Volkswagen plant in Chakan occupies a total area of over 2.3million square
meters (575 Acres), with buildings covering about 115 thousand square metres, which
means, the total premises is 2x1kilometres.
A workforce of over 3500 people was engaged in building during its peakconstruction stages. The plant was built with an investment commitment of INR 3800
Crores (580 million Euros) by Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd. It is the largest investment by a
German company to date in the Indian growth market

Production
The plant has a production capacity of 110,000 vehicles a year. The construction of
the plant commenced in 2007 and has been built in a record time of 17 months.
The Honorable Governor of Maharashtra His Excellency Shri. S. C. Jamir and Prof.
Dr. Jochem Heizmann, officially inaugurated the new plant on March 31st, 2009 in the
presence of nearly 500 international guests.
The Pune plant is one of the most modern in the Volkswagen Group. It has a high
level of vertical integration and a large share of local suppliers. The facility is the only
production plant operated by a German automaker in India that covers the entire
production process from press shop through body shop and paint shop to final
assembly.
The facility uses futuristically designed state-of-the-art equipment. For example,
the Body shop uses the Diode Laser Brazing (DLB) technology, whereas the Roof & SideFramer laser technology is used for welding the roof to the body of the car. The facility is
also one of the few environment friendly manufacturing plants around the area. For
Example, the Exhaust of the Paint shop is re-burnt and the resultant heat and energy is
reused.
Full-fledged production has taken off at the plant with the production of the SkodaFabia in May 2009, followed by a Polo based model in December 2009.

Human Resource Department
Our success is based on the qualification and personal commitment of around
500,000 people (December 31, 2011) who are employed by the Volkswagen Group.
A company will only be able to survive in the face of international competition if it has a
top team, characterized by a high level of competence, dedication, inventiveness andfitness.
Competence is created from good basic training and a life-long willingness to
learn. Dedication ideally means entrepreneurial thinking and actions, not only by
management staff. Active contribution of ideas and participation are expected of all
members of staff.
The success factors are encouraged in our human resources processes and in
projects.
Volkswagen is not only our name, but also our standard:Volkswagen became number one in the European car market decades ago and continues
to do so through exceptional value for money and premium products, which are reliableand of high quality.
To achieve this position in the Indian market within a short period of time and tocapture the heart of the Indian customers, we need talented, committed, qualified andhigh performing people to run our facility at Pune.
