2. PUBLISHABLE SUMMARY

2.1 A summary description of project context and objectives

“PRECIOUS: PREventive Care Infrastructure based On Ubiquitous Sensing” will provide a preventive care

system to promote healthy lifestyles, which is comprised of three components:

(1) Transparent sensors for monitoring user context and health indicators (food intake, sleep and activity),

which deliver ambient data about current user behaviour; (2) Users are represented by individual virtual

models which allow inferring of health risks and desired behavioural changes;

(3) State-of-the-art motivational techniques (originating especially from gamification and motivational

interview) trigger a set of feedback tools to change the user habits toward more healthy conduct.

While related projects usually focus on developing specific sensors, middleware solutions, health monitoring

systems, e-health services, etc., both the individual virtual model and the associated motivational tools will

now provide key innovation steps towards a preventive care system with measurable impact on user behaviour

and thus a clear potential for large-scale commercialization and sustainable societal footprint (e.g. with respect

to cost saving in the public health sector as well as life quality improvements).

To reach these ambitious goals, the PRECIOUS consortium gathers partners from academia, SMEs and

hospitals with comprehensive expertise in networking, pervasive sensing, cognitive analysis, nutrition

research, semantic technologies and motivational techniques. We have chosen to focus on type II diabetes as a

central use case, while our prototype will be easily adaptable also to other lifestyle-induced diseases. The

system will not only detect and communicate detailed early warning signs, but also provide forecasts of future

developments and associated problems (if change recommendations are not followed). Extensive lab- and

field-based user trials will demonstrate the efficacy of the PRECIOUS system and prove its positive and

lasting impact on individual quality of life as well as public health sector development.

2.2 Project work organization

The PRECIOUS project is organized in 6 work packages:

WP 1 – Management: The goal of the Management WP is to investigate and apply the agile

management process to keep track of the progress of the project and to handle the relating process

requirements set by EC. This task will prepare the product Handbook, take care of project

administration and organize deliverance of project reports. PRECIOUS will apply agile process

management principles both for large scale organization and for individual WPs. Therefore, important

objective of this WP is also in research and application of innovational organizational management

principles and practices.

WP 2 - Requirement Identification and Socio-economics: The primary objective of this work

package is to define and analyze user requirements, service design and the definition of use cases and

respective scenarios. All partners will contribute to this work package but it is led by Campden BRI.

In this WP we study also socio-economic implications of the system and investigate the respective

ICT-enabled preventive care business models to be deployed with the relevant stakeholders and

societal actors. Ethical considerations and cultural factors of service design and service science are

also important topics of this WP.

WP 3 –Virtual Individual Model and Building Motivation: This work package will design and

implement the applications that will collect the data from sensing devices, the components that will

perform the data aggregation from multiple sources, and the components that will provide semantics

analysis and user modeling to provide optimized multi modal feedback to end users. In this WP we

design and prototype the elements that will form the intelligent systems for recognition of behavioral

trends and prediction or early detection of health risks on the basis of various data, including data

acquired by psycho-physiological measures and individual self -assessments. The most important

objective of this WP is to create the Individual Virtual Model of the user such that it can support

verified motivation build-up. This can then reassure the longer term health impact of the designed

services for preventive care.

WP 4 - System, Sensors and Feedback Tools: The primary objective of this work package is to

design and test the core sensor platforms and the required interfaces to interact with the end-user and

actuators. This package will define the interfaces for both semantic and network interoperability and

standardized formal compatibility in middleware programming ontologies, telecommunication

technologies, and respective electrical interfaces. In this WP we design and prototype advanced

sensors to acquire data of users’ lifestyle aspects, behavior and surrounding environments. Also, we

investigate and design the actuator interfaces that are required to provide feedback and user guidance.

We also research and develop the supportive environment that is engineered to support awareness of

healthy behaviors, offering personalized guidance and provide support and motivation for behavioral

change. This work package will analyze the respective technical system requirements and design the

target architecture to address those requirements and selected usage scenarios following WP2.

Appropriate semantic methods to extract and help in disseminating information for health co-

producers to initiate and maintain an improved lifestyle, are also defined in this WP. Furthermore,

WP4 will design and implement the end-to-end network and service platform and respective

middleware applications that will collect the data from sensing devices and deliver to the data

processing system response that will then be communicated to the end-user through multimodal user

interface and the supporting actuators. Therefore, the middleware will perform the data aggregation

from multiple sources. Also, the middleware will support semantics analysis of user interactions with

the system and respective user modeling in terms of the Virtual Individual Model.

WP 5 – System Validation: This work package will handle the testing and validation of the system as

a proof of concept. Respective unit testing, integration testing and end-to-end system validation are

important topics of this WP. This work package will include system testing in a controlled lab

environment as well as field tests.

WP 6 Dissemination and exploitation: Organic connection of project intermediate results and

respective communication with societal actors and end users are import part of agile project

management principles. Therefore, both F2F (once a year) and virtual seminars (approx. quarterly) and

especially societal actor related workshops (annually) will be arranged to get this feedback. Scrum-

methodology will be used to guide the whole project and the individual sub-teams. Chat-forums, sub-

project targeted wikis and Twitter techniques will be developed to support the real-time agile project

management principles. We focus especially to optimization of efficient and high quality management

structures such that the management related bureaucracy - burden could be minimized but the effect of

quality supporting feedback structures could be maximized. This work package will also manage the

general public promotion of the results and benefits of the system to facilitate its adoption in real life.

The respective dissemination processes will be researched, developed and realized together with local

health authorities is all the participating countries of this study. This gives also some more

perspectives of how the message of preventive care could be clearly convoyed in different cultures.

The WPs sub-structure and interactions can be visualized as follows:

2.3 Description of the work performed since the beginning of the project and the

main results achieved so far

2.3.1 Overall Achievements in Year 1

The PRECIOUS project started with a successful bootstrap of the scientific and technical work as planned in

the PRECIOUS project plan. All partners of the project gathered in Helsinki in October 2013 for an intensive

three-day kick-off workshop where the work agenda was set and directions were discussed for the practical

execution of the first year’s work. Several partners had already started to work on various PRECIOUS-related

technical and scientific tasks. During the first project month Aalto (active partner in the management work

package, WP1) set up the complete management structure to support both internal management and external

communication of the project.

From the very beginning of the project, the work was promoted in particular mainly in WP2, PRECIOUS

Requirements Identification and Socio-Economics with the objective of identify the user requirements and

targeted usage scenarios for the technical work. Shortly after the beginning of the project the PRECIOUS

consortium held a coordination meeting in Chipping Campden hosted by Campden BRI on April 6-7 2014

where all partners engaged for two days in a productive coordination of scientific and technical discussions on

requirements and the visualization of the needs of end users.

The ninth project month marked the submission of deliverable D2.1: List of usage scenarios and user

requirements as well as the successful completion of first the project milestone MS2 - Usage scenarios and

user requirements specified. An interim review was originally planned to be held in Brussels to review the

proposed usage scenarios and collect feedback from experts. However, the Project Officer proposed to skip the

meeting and submit a draft document instead, which was delivered in April 2014.

Overall, in year 1 the consortium refined the PRECIOUS vision by successfully promoting the scientific and

technical work that has resulted in a number of publications in scientific venues. Several of the results have

been communicated across work packages in face to face technical meetings as well as through remote

coordination by using email and conference calls. The consortium management has supported the fluent

execution of the project and any unplanned events have not hampered the successful execution of the work.

We have engaged in conference calls and discussions with other projects both in Europe such as Food4Me

(http://www.food4me.org/) but also in USA with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences from

Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (http://www.globalobesity.org/)

2.4 The expected final results and their potential impact and use

The project consortium has developed a number of concrete exploitation ideas to increase the impact,

described as follows.

a) A mobile application has implemented entirely by project researchers to collect feedback from end

users about usability and motivation to use the application on daily basis.

b) A web service is being implemented where users can access the information collected from the mobile

application. This service would be the starting point for final PRECIOUS end service. Thus, early

test of the service will provide the need feedback to optimize the service.

4. WORK PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS DURING THE

REPORTING PERIOD

4.1 Work Package Achievements

4.1.1 WP1: Management

The main achievements of WP1 for this reporting period can be summarized as follows:

Setting up the project web site and document repository

Finalization of year 1 reporting figures and cost claim process.

Successful coordination of the various project activities and partners.

Timely and regular communication with the project partners.

Formal review and final submission of the various technical deliverables due in year 1.

Regular coordination emails and conference calls with project partners.

Support and preparation for plenary meetings.

Contribution to the maintenance and updating of the PRECIOUS project Web site.

4.1.2 WP2: Requirement Identification and Socio-economics

The main objective of WP2 in the reporting period was to identify the key user requirements of the

PRECIOUS system and to prioritise the implementation of these (Task 2.1). Campden BRI, in conjunction

with EuroFIR AISBL, carried out situational interviews to determine the drivers and barriers for behaviour

change in four target areas (diet, physical activity, sleep and stress) and to explore how technology could assist

users to achieve their behavioural change goals. These interviews resulted in the development of 16 key user

requirements, which were defined during the meeting held in Chipping Campden (Apr 2014). AALTO co-

ordinated the prioritisation of the requirements by applying the MOSCOW method. All consortium members

rated the requirements according to this method, resulting in 7 ‘MUST HAVE’ requirements that will form the

focus for initial system architecture design. This work is reported in D2.1 List of usage scenarios and user

requirements, which was submitted in July 2014.

During the reporting period, activities have also taken place within task 2.2 and task 2.3. Task 2.2 considers

economic models for the PRECIOUS preventive care ecosystem. UNIVIE is leading the preparation of D2.2

Interim report on socio-economic factors and business models and has circulated a draft version to the

consortium; including a proposed a table of contents and outlining related work and requirements. This

deliverable is due for submission in July 2015. Task 2.3 concerns ethical and privacy issues within the project,

which includes the ethical review of research studies carried out and the wider ethics and privacy

considerations for the PRECIOUS system and service. Preparation of D2.4 Ethical and privacy guidelines for

PRECIOUS system implementation was co-ordinated by HU and submitted in Oct 2014. Furthermore, the

consortium will submit annual reports on ethical issues encountered during the preceding year and VHIR has

taken responsibility for the development of these reports. The first annual report was submitted in Oct 2014.

6. PROJECT MANAGEMENT DURING THE PERIOD

WP1 provides the internal project management and the overall co-ordination of activities, financial- and

technical- planning and control. It ensures that the project objectives are met and represents the contact point

of the project to the Commission, the FP7 community and the external world. It also addresses any issues

concerning access rights, including cases where partners join or leave the project during its duration. It is

assisted in its tasks by all other PRECIOUS WPs’ representatives.

The main objectives for WP1 for year 1 has been to ensure a smooth and effective management of the project,

taking care on a daily basis of the overall co-ordination of activities, both financial and technical, and

guaranteeing an efficient interaction with the European Commission. In particular, during year 1, which is the

first year of the project where some partners are new to EU funded projects and they have to setup the required

processes and practices. WP1 aimed at supporting the PRECIOUS partners in effectively following up on the

required processes.

6.1 Management Achievements

WP1: Project Management

Aalto performs project management activities and took care of the payment transfer among partners in

accordance with the Grant Agreement.

Aalto contributed to finalise the cost claim process for year 1 and reviewed all deliverables to ensure fine-

grained visibility on work progress and resource consumption and to guarantee clean formatting and a good

quality of English.

Actual vs Planned

Estimated

Actuals

In this graph the actual usage of person months is compared - for the sake of simplicity - to a linearly planned distribution function, throughout the

duration of a work package. It is possible to observe that PMs’ usage is overall aligned to the plans, with slight over-consumption that remained

rather constant all along the project lifetime with a small increase towards the end of the first year which was mainly due to extra-efforts dedicated

to address some of the deliverables towards the end of the first year.
