Conceptual Models on the Southern Hemisphere CMs on SH

The Aim of the Project CMs on SH

• Investigate and develop Conceptual Models on the Southern Hemisphere• Derive, describe and collect the results in appropriate training material

• Target group 1: training institutions• This material is an important basis for Universities, the Centres of Excellence in the

framework of the WMO VLabs and other training centres:• To visualise the dynamical and thermodynamical processes in the troposphere • To give a thorough view on the lifecycle of weather systems

• Target group 2: weather services• The introduction of CM thinking in weather services leads to an application in:

• Analysis and Nowcasting • Weather Warnings and Weather Alarms

• Intended area:– Whole SH but developed in several steps (project phases)

Why a project „CMs on SH“

• Preparation of good training material for a deeper and „visually accompanied“ understanding of the physical processes going on in the troposphere

• CM approach helps in combining the different data sources for getting a quick deep insight in the actual weather situation

• Help in nowcasting and weather warnings• Deepens the use of numerical models and

give hints for model errors

Splitting in Phases

• Definition of CMs:– A conceptual model describes essential features of a meteorological phenomenon and

identifies the principal processes taking place.

• Experience from NH: Atlantic + Europe:– Derivation and Presentation of sets of CMs is a rather „big job“– Working tools like a Visualisation SW for combining satellite imagery with fields of other

meteorological material are necessary

• Logical Step: Splitting of „CMs on WholeSH“ in single phases– Start with an area where knowledge about the satellite material as well as necessary

SW-tools do exist or are easily to adapt from existing ones

• „CMs on SH – 1 st phase“ : Meteosat area: S-Atlantic + Africa + S-America• Involvement of the other areas already in 1st phase

Development of CMs for Phase 1 area:Focal point onConceptual models comparable to the N-Atlantic/Europe: fronts, substructures, cyclogenesis

(Preliminary) presentation of results in SatManu

Meteorologists from Africa + S-America (phase 1 area)

Trainees:Passing training in CM development and application

Development of CMs for Phase 1 area:Focal point on area-specific Conceptual models: preferable smaller-scale withhazardous weather
