Conveyor Idlers are used to carry or conveyconveyor belt loaded with bulk material. These carrying idlers are fabricated fromdifferent materials such as heavy guage steeltubing or seamless steel tubing, dependingupon the requirement and their applications. These idlers are specially designed toprovide smooth transition of bulk material forlong period of time and are available withimpact rings made of special shockabsorbing compound. Troughing idlers areuse for conveying bulk materials, and aredesigned and manufactured with Troughingangels of 200 and300 normally. Idlers of 450trough angle or any other angle are alsomanufactured as per customer’s design anddrawings. We can also design manufactureand supply 5 rollers type idlers. Mountingbrackets are manufactured out of standardsteel sections to have rigidity and stability ofthe frame. Shafts are manufactured out ofCarbon steel bright steel bars suitable for anytorsional load and bending movement.Conveyor idlers determine to a great extentthe efficiency of a belt conveyor. They mustbe accurately made and provide a rigidframework that will maintain permanentalignment of well-balanced, smooth running, easy turning of idler rolls.

The state of a country’s iron and steelindustry products an index as its industrialprogress. A universaly aecepteal yardstateformeasuring a cointerators level of eaenoineelevelopment is is per capita onsumption ofsteel. Judg by the yordexick the depressingfact remains that. India is among thecountries with the loeoest per captaconsunpoeon of steel in the world, with only14 bg Developed cournes such as sweeden, west Germany Japan and U.S.A. hous highpercapita consumption figeres. The histary ofiron & steel making in India goes bade to over2500 years, making India of of the carliestusess of iron and sted in the world. In ancienttimes, India has ettained a remarkafly highdegree of skill in iron of iron products smeltingand the making. The basic raw material forelectric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking insteel scrap. With the rapid growth in EAFsteelmaking, demand for scrap has been onthe increase. On the other hand, improvements in steelmaking practices, andsubsequent processing steps of casting androlling have improved yields of semis andfinished products which ahs led to reductionin the volume of return scrap generated inthese operations. The problem of scrapshortage necessitated the search for asuitable alternative and today sponge iron isfound to be technically and economically aviable substitute for scrap.

Manufacturing of steel tubes & pipes is,basically a Heavy Mechanical Engineeringindustry and is mostly produced in largescale. Mainly there are 1) Black &Galvenised welded tubes & pipes, 2) ERW -Steel tubes and, 3) Seamless Steel tubes.ERW steel tubes are chiefly used in bicycles, transformers, L.P. Boilers, furnituresindustries etc. While seamless steel tubesare used in oil exploration, fertilizer, boiler &chemical industries. Normally, the plantcapacity of Indian steel tube units rangesfrom 5,000 M.T. to 25,000 M.T. per annum. The industry of even smaller capacity ispossible which can suit the S.S.I. parametersbut the economy of scales is always there. The improving industrial climate, greateremphasis on oil exploration, powergeneration and the nuclear programme haveimproved prospects for the Indian steel pipesand tubes industry, despite some temporarydifficulties created by official policy. It nowmanufacturers items like seamless tubes andspeciality pipes for use in oil exploration anddrilling, conveyance of petroleum and gas,the chemical and fertiliser industries, nuclearplants etc. a and more speciality products areon the cards. Till recently, seamless tubesand pipes constituted the largest single itemof import for India.

The term power plant is often used loosely todesignate any plant in which steam isgenerated regardless of whether power isproduced. In a more exact sense an industrialsteam power plant is one in which power isgenerated from steam. The term powergeneration in the engineering sense impliesthe production of mechanical or electricalpower from some other source of energy e.g,thermal hydroelectric or electrochemicalenergy. Conventional means of powergeneration have used air steam or water as aworking medium for internal combustionengines reciprocating steam engines andsteam and hydraulic turbines. Newertechniques such as magnetohydrodyamic,fuel-cell wind and solar power are underinvestigation and may eventually proveimportant. Per capita power consumption is abarometer of country’s prosperity, economicgrowth and industrialization. Major portion ofthe additional power requirement will have tobe met through thermal generation.

Aluminium extrusion products are widely used intransport industry, rail roads, electronics andhousing industry etc. The manufacturing ofextruded products started long back. But, theindustry expanded rapidly during last twodecades. In 1967-68. There only 3 units engagedin manufacturing aluminium extruded productsbut till 1983-84 the number has reached 12 withtotal installed capacity 25,490 MT year @113%capacity utilisation. Imparts of aluminiumextruded products in the seventies had beenquite high but the stress is being made to reduceit in order to save foreign exchange and hencepartially it is taking place of import substitute. This is clear from the import in 1979-80 as highas 3,36,659 M.T. valued at Rs. 1,05,35, 820/- tojust 33753 M.T. in 1980-81 and 56,222 in 1981-82. On the other hand, the exports of aluminiumextruded products is gradually on rise (From27,591 M.T. in 1973-74 to 55,395 M.T. in 1981-82). Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh,Burma Hong Kong, Kenya, Kuwait, Oman,Srilanka, U.A.E. etc. are the main middle Eastcountries to whom aluminium extruded products

The 20th century has seen the emergence ofaluminium as a key industrial and strategicmaterial, second to only steel in terms ofimportance and tonnages of production. Apoint to notice is the upsurge in productionsynchronizing with the two world warspointing to the need for aluminium asstrategic material. In todays industrialcivilization, aluminium is important because itserves as a basic input for a number ofindustry is, it is indistpensable for building upand strengthening the industrial infra-structure in the basic sectors viz. power andtransportation. Besides finding extensive usein other vital sectors like space, defense, buildings, construction, domestic hardwaresetc. Aluminium is a metal with high strength-to-weight ratio, better formability, highductility, anti-corrosive properties, withthermal and electrical conductivity. Becauseof these unique combination of properties, aluminium(including its al loys) hassubstantially replaced a number of traditionalmaterials from their established uses e.g.steel, copper, lead and zinc among metalsand glass. Wood and paper among non-metals. Aluminium is crucial for expansion ofpower availability and electrificationprogramme. It has a significant role to play insaving energy in transportation sector, thushelp reducing the consumption petroleumproducts.

Bottling plant is a plant where beverages areput into bottles with a cap. These bottles arewidely used for storage purposes. Liquefiedpetroleum gas (LPG) consists mainly ofpropane, propylene, butane, and butylene invarious mixtures. However, in the UnitedStates, the mixture is mainly propane. It isproduced as a by-product of natural gasprocessing and petroleum refining. Thecomponents of LPG are gases at normaltemperatures and pressures. LPG bottlingplant is a plant where LPG is put into bottlesfor storage. The plant has the facility torecieve bulk LPG by pipeline from a reliablesource or any area. This is the safest and thecheapest way of transporting bulk LPG. Theplant is equipped with hydraulic cylindertesting equipment for periodic testing of thecylinders. To ensure safe and accurate fillingof the cylinders well experienced technicalpeople should only be employed in theworking of the plant.

Brick are produced in almost all towns andvillages in India, and organised bricks fieldsare found in the neighborhood of largecities. Refractory bricks, a special class ofbricks, are included under refraction. Bricksare made of earth or natural clay fly ash, sanddust which should be sufficiently plastic andshould not shrink, crack or warp duringdrying and burning. Iron oxide in the clay isresponsible for the characteristics redcolour of Bricks, and excess of it gives thema bluish black colour. The usual size ofbricks are 12" x 6" x 22" (old Indian bricks)10" x 5" x 3" (usual Bengal bricks), 92" x 43/4" x 2 3/4" (Bengal P.W.D. Specif), 9" x 4" x22" (Northern India P.W.D. specif). The widthof the brick is about 2" less than half of itslength, so that one brick when laidlengthwise will just cover two bricks laidcross wise, with a filling of mortar betweenthem. Hollow bricks are light (about 11percent lighter than ordinary bricks) andafford better insulation against sound heatand cold. They may be made in any brickfactory worked by power and aremanufactured in three sizes: 9" x 42" x 3", 9" x52" x 2 5/8", and 9" x 62" x 3". They aremainly used to replace reinforced concretein roof construction. Roof slabs fabricated onthe ground are hoisted into position, savingthe costly centering and some cement andsteel. The weight of hollow-brick roofing, jackarch roofing and reinforced concrete roofingare in the ratio, 66:100-125:70-75.

Stainless Steel is a high grade steel to which has

been alloyed such elements as Manganesse

(MN) silicon (Si) Phosphorus (P) chromium (Cr)

Nickel (Ni) and Molybednum (Mo). Of these

elements chromium and nickel are in the largest

quantities. According to the particular type of

steel, it will combain 10 to 30% of chromium and

10-25% of nickel. There are over 40 types of

stainless steels available. These are generally

classed by the number. This is classified

according to the heat treatment properties of the

steel and its alloys. The common type of the

sheet stainless steel used in the work shop is

type 302. This type of steel used for almost all

sorts of containers, sinks and counters in th

restaurant. Then, some times it is classified in

several different orders on the basis of their

fionish. Steel has a silver chrome apperance

and generally can be easily recognised by its

grained appearance.

Indian rubber industry is nearly five decadesold. There are over 1,400 ubbermanufacturing units spread over thecountry. The total production of rubber goodsis estimated at Rs 340/- crores. In a span ofover 50 years the Indian rubber Industry hasgrown from strength to strength. Nearly adecade ago the industry was entirelydependent on imports for its basic rawmaterials. But now the industry is almost selfsufficient except for a very small range ofspecialty products. The industry’s steadyprogress can be evident from the followingfacts. Consistent increase in consumption ofnew rubber which has jumped from 22, 790,tonnes in 1951 is 1,38,200 tonnes in 1972.Considerable increase in number of rubberfactories. Steady increase in exports ofrubber products crossing the figure of Rs 11.5crores. The natural rubber production in thecountry at the end of current year 1973 wouldbe 1.25 lakh times, synthetic rubber 35,000tonnes and reclained 30,000 tonnes. Theindustry manufactures almost everyconceivable rubber product, from tiny toyballoons to giant tractor and aero tyres, needed for internal consumption as well asfor exports.

Electric switches, plugs, sockets, etc. arenothing but electric fittings which are quitefamiliar to the people as it is found in everyhome. They can be manufactured usingdifferent major raw materials e.g. steel, brass, thermosetting or thermoplastic resinsHowever this report is totally based onbakelite powder or resin which isthermosetting type. Bakelite powder is alsoknown as phenol formaldehyde resin. alsoother electrical accessories e.g. plates, lamps holders, may be manufactured fromphenol formaldehyde resin and same plantand machineries making the industry highlyflexible and profitable. Besides electricalfittings radio cabinets, inks stands, tablelamps, door and cabinets, handles, powerrelay components, camera shutters, textilebobbins and other accessories may also bemanufactured with little or no change. Asmentioned earlier though electrical fittingsmay be manufactured from other materialsalso it may be noted that bakelite electricalfittings are best and economical. Alsobakelite is bad conductor of electricity makingthem shock resistant which may be there iscase of metal electrical fittings. Electricfittings are manufactured in different sizes asrequired by the customer. They may be oftwo or three pin. Three pin sockets and plugshave one major advantage over two pin one’ssince they are earthed also. Also variouscombinations are practiced in the 5-15ampere range.

The fluorescent lamp is also a gaseousdischarge lamp, the ‘gas’ being actuallymercury vapour at low pressure. A large partof the light emitted by this discharge, however, falls in ultra-violet part of thespectrum and thus invisible; apart of this, glass will not transmit ultra-violet rays to anyextent. So that very little passes through tothe outside of the envelope. In order to arriveat a really efficient and economical source oflight, the principle of fluorescence wasintroduced; by fluorescence is meant thephenomenon arising from the capacity ofcertain substances for absorbing short-waveradiations and re-emitting them as radiationsof a longer wavelength. If for convenience werefer to the emissions just beyond the red andblue extremities of the spectrum bysomewhat para doxical term “invisible light. Inpractice this transformation is brought aboutby a layer of powdered material applied to theinside of the glass envelops of the Lamp;under normal conditions these powdersappear to be white. This powder is fullyirradiated by the ultra-violet rays emitted bythe gas under the influence of the electriccurrent, and this, very briefly, is the principleon which the fluorescent lamp works.

A non-woven fabric is a sheet structure madefrom fibres held together by mechanical, chemical, thermal or solvent means, or by acombination of these. The term does notinclude hopes, or fabrics which are woven, knitted, tufted, stitch-banded or made by woolfelting. In comparatively simple terms, a non-woven may be described as a fabric havingtextile-like properties, which is prepared bybanding fibres together, rather than by thetraditional method of spinning into yarns, followed by weaving. Non-woven fabrics findtheir applications as carpets, blankets, upholstry, floor coverings, wall-coverings,automotive carpets, etc. The fibres principallyused are polyester, nylon and viscose withoccasionally, small amounts of acrylic. These fibres are blended in varying amounts, depending on the type of interfacing beingmade. Techniques by which fabrics are madedirectly from the fibres, by passing bothspinning and weaving, have been utilized forcenturies in the production of felt and barkcloth.

Particle board is as the name suggests aboard made of particles of bagasse. Thusparticle board is a board made frombagasse which is bonded by means of a resinunder the application of pressure andtemperature. The organic binder resin usedare normally urea formaldehyde if the particleboard is to be used for interior use, or phenolformaldehyde is used if this is used inexternal exposurer or under severe internalconditions. Melamine formaldehyde is alsoused. The first plant to produce particle boardcommercially was built in Bremen, WestGermany in 1941. The first three layerparticle board was marketed in Switzerland in1945. Particle boards find extensive use inthe building industry furniture industrycabinets and automobile construction largesize panels can also be manufactured ateconomic costs. In the hot press the mats aresubjected to a high pressure and temperatureso that the synthetic resin is introducedbetween two heated plates and hammed atregular intervals to form a board which goesout at the other end continuously. Aggarbatti is the Indian name for the Incensestick, which is a well known product comingevery class of people due to its attractiveperfumery smell. The use of perfumerycompounds started very early in the history. It would probably had its beginning with theAtlantions who flourished at a periodconjectured to antedate the christian era byabout 23,000 years. For the earliest recordssof perfumery compound. It is necessary toturn to Egypt Egyptian kings were very fondof perfumes in various forms. Perfumeswere used for three quite distinct purposes bythe Egyptians. (1) As offerings to theirdeities. (2) For aesthetic purposes duringtheir lives. (3) As principal agents forembalming their dead. Cosmetics andperfumes were evidently used by jewishwomen. In India, China and many otherAsiancountries, natural perfumery compoundswere used in the prehistoric period itself.

The official name of acrylic bathtub is

fiberglass reinforced plastic bathtub, English

acrylic is homonym. The surface material is a

methyl ester C. The thickness of the acrylic

sheet before shaped is over 3mm, the bottom

is covered with many layers of fiberglass,

enhanced with specialized resin. Finished

bathtub should be even color throughout the

whole tub, the surface should be smooth,

non-hierarchical, no bubbles etc. The tub

should be combined with the fiberglass very

solidly without peeling. Acrylic bathtub is low

carbon and environment protection, widely

styles, light weight, easy installation, low

maintenance, so, more and more

construction projects and families start to use

it.Acrylic bathtubs are less expenseve, better

warm keeping, hi gloss with a wide range of

colors. Acrylic bathtubs hold the heat better

and keep the water warm longer after you

initially filled it. You will have no feeling of

“cold” when touch it. Compared with cast iron

bathtub and steel bathtub, it gives you the

feeling of “warm and soft” instead, and won’t

make yuour body pain. Because of better

reprocessing performance, acrylic bathtubs

can be molded in larger sizes than standard

bathtubs. They are ideal and perfect material

for producing whirlpool bathtubs.

Intra venous fluids, in general are used as I.Vdrips for patients in nursing homes andhospitals suffering from acute dehydrationor considerable debilitating conditions. These I.V fluids replanish the body fluids.Though a number of I.V fluids are there, generally three types of I.V fluids are usedin hospitals as I.V drips. They are as follows:-1. Dextrose injection fluid, 2. Dextrose andsodium chloride injection fluid, When salineis injected intravenously, it compensate thedeficiency of sodium ions when dextrose isinjected it gives energy due to glucosecontent of it when dextro-saline is given incombination, it replanishes the dehydrationas well as gives energy thereby recoupingdebility syndrome and also in general takecare of malaise. Dextrose (D-glucose, cornsugar, starch sugar, blood sugar, grapesugar) is by for the most abundant sugar innature and occurs either in the free state(monosaccharide form) or chemicallylinked with other sugar varieties. In the freestate, it occurs in substantial quantities inhoney, fruits, and berries. As a polymer ofanhydrodextrose units, it occurs in starch, cellulose, and glycogen. Sucrose is adisaccharide of dextrose and fructose.Commercial production of dextrose byhydrolysis of starch yields white crystallinesugars that are either anhydrous(C6H12O6) or hydrated (C6H12O6H2O).

Anti-foaming agents may be categorizedas solubilized surfactants, as dispersionsof hard particlces and as dispersions of softparticles. In all cases a liquid non-aqueousvehicle is present even where the anti-foaming agent is represented as a solidformation. Water may also be presentparticularly in emulsif ied sil iconeformulations. Antifoaming agent are usedto reduce foaming owing to proteins gasesor nitrogenous materials which may causeinterference with processing. Formulationof silicone and other polymers in all are usedoften in emulsion form. the num ber ofsynthetic and natural materials used indefoamers is legion however they have incommon a degree of surface activity. Soft -particle formulations may consist of paraffincwaxes or falty amides among othercomponents as the dispersed phase a nonaqueous liquid serves as the vehicle. A fineparticle size is generally desired which iseffected by grinding or chilling a hot solutionrapidly. In addition to the particulatecomponents members of solubilizedsurfactant class are generally present.

D-Soribitol, CH2OH(CHOH)4CH2OH (D-glucitol, L-gulitol), is a hexahydric alcoholwith a 6-carbon atom straight-chain thatcontains six hydroxyl gropups, and has amolecular weight of 182.17. It exists as awhite, odorless, crystalline solid. Because ofa negative heat of solution, sorbitol has acooling effect when tasted. The hexitol hasabout two-thirds the sweetness of sugar.Sorbitol was first isolated by the Frenchchemist Joseph Boussingault in 1872 fromthe fresh juice of mountain ash berries. Ithas since been found in many naturalproducts such as edible fruits (apples, plums, peaches, cherries, etc.), berries ofmountain ash, hawthorn and Sorbusdomestica, tobacco, algae, and redseaweed. In spite of its wide occurrence, natural materials are not a good commercialsource of sorbitol, and it is madesynthetically. The content of sorbitol ingrapes is insignificant and advantage istaken of this situation by using a sorbitolassay of grape wines as a means ofdetecting adulteration with other fruit wines orapple cider. This sugar alcohol has beensynthesized by the reduction of D-glucose,D-fructose, L-glucose and D-mannose. Themost important commercial processes arethe electrolytic and high pressurehydrogenation of D-glucose (dextrose),although the electrolytic method is graduallyfading out of the picture.

Pain is perhaps the most universal of man’sexperiences. The sensation is valuable inalerting an individual to the fact that they havebeen injured or may be ill, and is a useful guideto the physician in making an accurate diagnosisand in evaluating the efficiency of a therapeuticregimen. Beyond these important functions ofpain as sensation is pain as suffering i.e., theoriginal senation plus there actions evoked bythe sensation. Man has probably always soughtmethods for the relief of suffering pain. Beforethe advent of modern therapentics, relief of painwas frequently the only treatment available foran afflicted individual, any thing whichdescrease sensibility was regarded as useful.Analgesics are substances that relieve pain.

The purpose of Coolant is to removeexcess heat produced from the engineoperation, to control corrosion andscaling, antifreeze and boil over theradiator water. So many years ago waterwas used to reduce the temperature.Water is an effective heat transfer fluid butit boils at very low temperature., highlycorrosive and format scaling. It impure thecooling liquid by accumulating corrosiveand scaled waste. So it chocks up tubes ofradiator and finally engine overheats. Thecomplexity is increased with the use ofaluminum alloys in the head, water pumpand radiators.

Tricalcium orthophosphate, Ca3 (PO4)2,commonly known as calcium phosphate, occurs in nature as rock phosphate ore, forexample and is used as such as a source offertilizer. It can also be converted withsulphuric acid to a mixture of calciumsulphate and phosphoric acid, or it can alsobe converted with sulphuric acid to a mixtureof calcium sulfate and monocalciumphosphate, Ca(H2 PO4)2, the latter alsobeing known as calcium dihydrogenphosphate. Calcium phosphate has arelatively low phosphorous content (20%m/m) while monocalcium phosphate, whilehaving a much higher phosphorous content(26.5% m/m), is difficult to manufacture, andalso expensive mainly because one of the by-products of the reaction by means of which itis so prepared, calcium sulphate, has to bediscarded as a waste product. Therefore, there is a need for an economical method ofproducing calcium hydrogenphosphate fromcalcium phosphate. There is a further need inthe art for an economical method ofproducing monocalcium phosphate fertilizerfrom calcium phosphate and furtherproducing edible products from the resultantfertilizer.

Boric Acid (Orthoboric acid) H3BO3, formerlysometimes called boracic acid, is tonnagematerial, the predominant use of which(except as a raw material for boron and boronc o m p o u n d s ) i s i n m e d i c a l a n dpharmaceutical compounds, such as eye andmouth washes and nasal sprays. Solution ofboric acid non irritating and slightlyastringent, with antiseptic qualities. Asaturated solution of H3BO3 containsapproximately 2% of the compound at0oC;inceasing to 39% at 100o C.Commercially boric acid has the compositionB2O3.3H2O. It is derived by addinghydrochloric acid or sulphuric acid to asolution of borax and crystallizing. It is alsoderived from borax barine, by extraction witha kerosine solution of chelating agent suchas 2-ethyl-1, 3-hexane-diol, or other polyols.Borates are stripped from the chelate bysulphuric acid. At present only twoIndustries under DGTD which is engaged inthe manufacture of boric acid at the installedcapacity of 3,660 tonne per annum. Other 3-4industries also engaged in the manufactureof boric acid but the data is not available ofthese industries. It can be manufactured inthe small scale sector. Plant and machineryare indigenously available. Raw materialsrequired for the production of boric acid isalso indigenously available.

Fertilizers are substances which areintroduced into the oil to increase the yieldsof agricultural crops. In addition to increasingthe amount of agricultural produce, fertilizersalso improve their quality. Thus with theuse of fertilizes the starch, sugar, proteinand oil content of plant is raised, this in turnincreases the contents of fats andproteins in livestock’s products. The use offertilizers increases the strength of suchproducts as flax, cotton, and wool. Fertilizersincrease the resistance of plants todisease, drought, low temperatures andother condit ions which hinder thedevelopment of plants. Fertilizers are broadlyclassified in two types. (1) organic eg.manure etc and (2) Inorganic eg. CalciumAmmonium Nitrate, Super phosphate etc.Inorganic fertilizers are salts which containelements essential for plant growth andwhich are introduced into the soil to obtainlarge crops regularly. About 60 of theelements are found in composition of thevarious plants.

They are usually thedouble salts of ammonium, potassium orsodium sulphate with aluminium. Chromiumor iron sulphate, and are readily prepared yby concentrating and cooling a solutioncontaining molecular proportions of theComponent Sulphate. Ferric and Non FerricAlum is marketed in various grades. Thecheapest grade called “alum cake”. Potashalum also known as alum alumen. Ferricalumin is aluminium sulphate containing ironobtained from the bauxite ore. Potash alum isprepared from its naturally occurring mineralssuch as alunite, and Ratinite, but in Indiathese do not occur in appreciable quantities.Alum was formerly prepared from alumshales by roasting them in year and leachingit out with water. Alum is now produced inIndia by crystallizing together equivalentproduced in India by Crystallizing togetherequivalent proportion of potassium sulphateand aluminium sulphate. The solution isconcentrated and the crystals are separatedout are melted to yield lump alum orrecrystalized to obtain large crystals.

Inearliest human societies, powderedmaterials and clay muds were among the firstpreparations to be used on the face forcommetic purposes, and they are still beingused in this manner by primitive people. Thefirst substances used for powder were suchsimple and widely divefgent produccts aschalk and white lead. Slowly, they involvedmore complicated blends of differentmaterials, finally to emerge in the modernconcept and interpretation of powders. Notonly the talcum powders are used by womenbut also by men. As the art of making thistoiletory improved, perfume and colour, aswell as other improvements were introduced.Persons who are concerned about thier looksemploy it several times daily. In this modernage talcum powders are really products thatadd f ve ry mate r ia l l y to persona lattractiveness. Talcum powders arenowadays made today by reputablemanufacturers, consist of pur i f iedingredients, approved colours and non-irritating perfumes. None of the harmfuleffects are suffered through their use inspiteof many daily applications.

Azodicarbonamide is a blowing agent and is asynthetic material that has high consumptiona m o n g c h e m i c a l b l o w i n g a g e n t s .Azodicarbonamide also known as ‘1,1’-azobisformamide on dry decomposition at190oC yields a gas of about 60% N2, 35% COand minor amounts of ammonia carbon andcarbon dioxide. The gas yield is high 230-240ml/g at standard temperature of pressure(CSTP). In 1978 largest volume of blowing agent5000 metric tons produced in the U.S. wasazodicarbonamide. Azodicarbonamide (ADA)also known as azobisformide (ABFA) is the mostimportant organic chemical blowing agent forPVC as many desirable properties required in agood blowing agent and in addition is non-flammable. ABFA can be easily compoundedwith dryblends as well as plastisols. It is used inthe manufacture of PVC foam fabrics, floorcoverings, low density open-cell foam, extrudedlow-density gaskets, wire and cable Jackets, slush molded products, cross cap-liners,injection moulded sols and high density profilesetc. A B F A is also used as foaming agents forEthylene-Vinyl acetate (EVA) plasters. Hair removal is the removal of body hair, anddescribes the methods used to achieve thatresult. Hair typically grows all over the humanbody during and after puberty. Men tend tohave more body hair than women. Both menand women tend to have hair on the head, eyebrows, eyelashes, armpits, pubic regionand legs; and men also have hair on theirface, abdomen, back and chest. Hair doesnot generally grow on the palms of the hands, the lips, certain areas of the genital structure,or the soles of the feet. Forms of hair removalare practised for a number of reasons, including cultural, sexual, medical andreligious. Forms of hair removal have beenpractised in almost all human cultures. Themethods used to remove hair have varied indifferent times and regions, but shaving is themost common method. Each culture ofhuman society has developed social normsrelating to the presence or absence of bodyhair, which has changed from one time toanother. Different standards can apply tomales and females. People whose hair fallsoutside a culture’s aesthetic standards mayexperience real or perceived socialacceptance problems.

Chitin is a white, hard, inelastic, nitrogenous, polysaccharide found in the outer skeleton ofinsects, crabs, shrimps and lobsters and inthe internal structures of invertebrates. It isthe second most abundant organiccompound next to cellulose. It is a macromolecular linear polymer of_ (1-4) N acetyl Dglucosamine and is insoluble in water andmany organic solvents. Chitin itself has only afew applications; it acts more as a precursorof Chitosan, its most familiar derivative.Chitosan is deacetylated chitin, and ispolymer of _(1-4) acetyl - D glucosamine. Ithas multifarious uses in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and medical industries. It iseven considered as a wonder drug of thetwenty-first century due to its versatile utility.Chitin is a chemical compound belong toglucosamine polysacchar ide groupcategories. It contains about 7% nitrogen, and is structurally similar to cellulose. It is theprincipal constituent of the shells of prawnfish, shrimps, crabs, lobsters, beetles andother sea fishes. It is also found in somefungi, algal and yeasts. Wayback in 1811 itwas discovered by a french botanist that thefibrous material in the shell of prawn is chitinwhich is a polymer of N-Acetyl glucosamine. But it was only in 1974 that the CIFT came outwith a simple technology for extraction ofchitin from prawn shell waste and itsconversion to chitosan.

Shoe Polishes are available in liquid, creamor paste, liquid shoe polish dries quickly, butis not readily available in a lot of colors anddoes not last as long as the other options.Shoe polishes are generally used to restorethe original lustre and finish of smoothsurface of the shoe. They are also expectedto cleam the surface and prevent thedeterioration. Most polishes contanin oil orwax for their lustering or polishing, properties.Oil polishmes are easy to apply but thesurface on which they are used attract dustand show finger marks. Wax polishes aremore difficult to apply, but are more leasting.OIl or wax base shoe polishes are of twotypes, waterless and aqueous. The formerare clear or translucent, the latter are milky inappearance. The shoe polish formulachanges day to day. These were motivated bydemands for easier use; changes in thecompetition of the surface to be polished, theneed for more consistent quality, especiallywith respect to better durability of the finish. The need to buff to achieve glass wascharacteristics of earlier formulas. Manymodern polishes are self-polishes and impartgloss without having to be buffed.

Alum is available in solid form as powder,

granular, kibbled & lump form. It can also be

purchased and fed as a liquid. Alum can be

effective in the pH range of 5.5. to 7.8, but

seems to work best in most water supplies in

a pH range of 6.8 to 7.5. Below a pH range of

5.5, alkalinity in the water supply is generally

insufficient. The aluminum ions become

soluble rather than insoluble and do not

participate in the hydration and reactions

necessary to make the alum effective as a

coagulant. In these instances the plant may

experience higher than normal filtered water

turbidites, and much of the aluminum will

pass through the filters. When the pH level of

the water is above 7.8 after the addition of the

alum, the aluminum ions again become

soluble, and the efficiency of coagulation is

decreased. Under these condition, aluminum

ions again penetrate the filters, and post

filtration alum coagulation can occur in the

clear well and in the distribution system in

some cases. Ferric alum is aluminium

sulphate (Al2(SO4)3 18 H2O) containing iron

obtained from the bauxite ore. It is soluble in

water alum is a white crystalline material it is

also available in 50% aqueous solution form.

Oxygen, the gaseous element thatconstitutes 20.946% of the earth’s,atmostphere, is essential to respiration andlife in all animals and to most forms ofvegetation. Oxygen supports the combustionof feels which supply mankind with heat, lightand power, and it enters into oxidativeCombination with many materials. The speedof reaction and effectiveness of combinationincreases with oxygen concentrationsgreater than that of air Industry hasestablished 99.5% purity for the bulkcommercial product. The great importance ofthe industrial gas, oxygen is due to theusefulness of the acetylene torch for steelwelding and steel cutting, and for the weldingof other metals, to lesser degree to theoxyhydrogen flame. Oxygen gas in thebreathing apparatus for a visitors at highaltitudes and for oxygentents in hospitals is ahigh altitudes and for oxygentents inhospitals is a more recent development.

Caustic soda, also known as sodiumhydroxide (NaoH) is an important industrialchemical product produced on a tonnagebasis in both solid and liquid form. It isdeliquescent, absorbing water vapour andcarbon dioxide from the air. It is alsoextremely corrosive and should be handledwith great care. Adequate protection frombodly contact with the solid form orconcentrated solutions should be provided. It is also a fire hazard compound as it heatsspontaneously and may ignite combustiblematerials that are nearly. A large part of thehuge amount used annually in the U.S. (About 21/2 million tons) is produced by theelectrolysis of the sodium chloride solutionsin the electrolylic cells, such as the Hooxer,Nelson, Force, or Allen-Moore. Chlorine is aby product of the reaction. Alternativeprocess is the soda-lime method.

Gelatin capsule was first invented in 1834 by

Mothes, a French pharmacy student in

collaboration with a French pharmacist

Dublanc. They used one piece olive shaped

structures which had to be sealed after filling

with a drop of concentrated gelatin solution

and were counterparts of the modern day

soft gelatin capsules. The inventors used

the capsules to mask the tastes of obnoxious

materials. Mothes first sold empty shells but

later supplied only filled ones. As such other

inventors tried to appear on the scene to

overcome the patent of Mothes. Lehuby in

1846 invented a two piece structure which

was identical with the present day hard

gelatin capsules. He called them ‘mes

enveloppes medicamenteuse’ or medicinal

envelopes. the first British patent was

granted to Murdoch in 1948 who was

Lehuby’s agent. Lehuby’s process for

production of gelatin shells was essentially

the one used today. The first large scale

manufacture of gelatin capsules was

undertaken by Eli Lilly & co. In Hampshire. In

U.S.A. the manufacture commenced nearly a

century ago. Large scale machinery for

manufacture of empty shells, which was full

automated, was designed in 1913. Filing and

sealing machinery came into being in 1950.

At first the devices were semi-automatic but

by 1960 fully automated versions were

marketed.

Processing of textile materials involves theuse of diverse types of compounds to performvarious functions. The compounds arevariously known as textile auxiliaries, textilechemicals, textile process chemicals etc. They may be broadly classified depending onhe purpose for which they are used into twogroups (1) Those which are used in textileprocessing to serve some purpose orpurposes and after these purposes areserved, they have to be removed from thetextile material being processed and (2)those which continue to form an integral partof the materials being processed by way ofeither chemical reaction with the textilesubstrate or mechanical deposition of watersoluble or water insoluble substances in thetextile substrate and are expected to remainon the material more or less permanently withstanding the subsequent rigorous action ofvarying degrees exerted on the end productsduring the use by the consumers. These twoclasses may be called temporary andpermanent textile auxiliaries respectively.Levelling agents used in dyeing acid dyes onwool or nylon as IN class of (normal dyeing)vat dyes on cotton or carriers and dispersingagents used in the dying of disperse dyes onpolyester fibres and solution aids used indissolving sparingly soluble dyes in printingpastes which normally contain a smallamount of water are some examples oftemporary textile auxiliaries.

The production oflaundry soap has sharply decreased in recentyears with the global spread of syntheticdetergents. Indeed, it appears as thoughsoap has given place to synthetic detergents. However, toilet soap enjoys a stabilizeddemand and its manufacture is not likely tolose in importance for a long time to come. Asfor the monthly production capacity of toiletsoap although there are plants whichmanufacture 500-1500 tonnes a month. Thesoap making process roughly consists ofsaponification and moulding. There arevarious methods of saponification. However, the hot process may be called the best onebecause the quality of soap in superior andthis process turns out Glycerine as a byproduct. Various oils and fats are used as rawmaterials for soap making tallow andconconut oil are mostly used in Japan. Soap may broadly be classified byuse as follows:- a) Soap household (toiletsoap, laundry soap etc.) b) Industrial soap.c) Special soap. Among them, theconsumption of special soap which is usedfor medical purposes and shampooing is notlarge. Industrial soap which is important, being used in the textile industry etc. is notconsumed in a large quantity, either.Household soap which is most importantquantitatively accounts for the larger part ofthe consumption of soap.

Flowers are symbol of beauty, love, affection, romance tranquility etc. Besides theiraesthetic value, they are important for theireconomic uses, such as for cut-blooms andfor extracting perfumes and other products. In our country, flowers are sanctified and arecommonly used in worshipping the deities inour homes and temples. We are intimatelyassociated with them, and on all festiveoccasions l ike marr iages rel ig iousceremonies and social functions, the use offlowers and garlands has become almostessential. A large genus of erect, same notesor climbing shrubs widely distributed in thetemperate parts of the northern hemisphereand on tropical mountains. About ten specieshave been introduced for cultivation asornamentals or for production of rose waterand attar. The genus includes about 120 ormore species a large majority of whichare native to the Asiatic region. It is dividedinto four sub-genera of which three aresmall and aberrant and the fourth, Eurosa, contains the roses proper. The importantancestral species from which modern gardenroses have been bred are all to be found infour of the ten section of Eurosa.Gallicanae contains R. gallica, the FrenchRose and R. damascena, the DamaskRose, and two other species, all of which aretetraploids with 28 chromosomes.

Copra is prepared from ripe or nearly ripenuts. The stage and period at which the nutsare harvested influence the quality of thecopra and the yield, Nuts harvested duringdry summer months give a higher yield thanthose harvested during rainy months.Coconuts take generally 12 months to ripen, nuts harvested earlier than 10 months yieldcopra of poor oil content. Fully mature nutsgive high yields of copra of good quality. Twotypes of copra are made milling copra andedible copra. Nearly 4/5th of the copraproduced in India is of the former class. Thequality of copra is judged from the amount ofoil it contains. Recorded oil percentages ofcopra from various producing countriesrange from 57-75%. It has been pointed outthat copra which is partially deterioratedthrough mould attack gives an abnormallyhigh yield of oil. Similarly, copra from thekernel still remaining in 7 months old seedinghas an oil content as high as 77%. The yieldof oil from copra depends on the moisturecontent of the copra and on the efficiency ofthe milling equipment.

Most crude oils and fats, whether obtained bypressing, solvent extraction or rendering aregiven a preliminary cleaning and clarificationtreatment by setting, screening, filtration orcentrifugation to make them more resistantagainst deterioration during storage. Whenrequired for edible purposes they are nearlyalways given a further refining treatment. Inmost cases, however, some refiningtreatment must be applied depending on thenature of the impurities and undesirableconstituents and on the purposes for whichthe oil is required. The impurities may be ofthe following types. (1) Fat-insoluble particlesdispassed in the fat. (2) Material held incolloidal suspension in the fat. (3) Fat solublesubstances. The fat insoluble impurities canbe removed by mechanical means such assetting, filtration or centrifugation; theyconsist principally of seed or tissue particles, mucilage, fibres from press cloths, dust, mineral matter traces of moisture. Thematerial held in colloidal suspension orsolution consists, largely or phosphatides, carbohydrates and nitrogen-containingcompounds and often complex compoundsof these. It can be removed by treatment withsteam, water, electrolytes, followed bysetting, centrifugation or filtration withadsorbents or other aids.

Starch is a group of polysacchrides, composed of glucopyranose units joinedtogether by-glucosidric linkages. It conformsto the molecular formula, (C6-H10O5)u,where n varies from a few hundred to overone million. Starh is found as the reservecerbonhydrate in various parts of plants andis enzymatically broken down to gluose toother erbohydrates according to themetabollic needs of the plants. Industrially, starch is broadly divided into two types viz, natural and modified. Natural starches, alsodesignated as unmodified starches orsimpluy starches, are obtained from grainssuch as and sorghum. from roots like potato, tapioca and arrow root, and from the pith ofthe stems of certain palms such a sago. Theyare further classified into cereal starches androot starches. The characteristics of thenatural starches are changed by chemical orenzymatic action and the products of thesereactions are termed modified starches. Thisgroup includes dextrins, acid-modifiedstarches, oxidized starches, starch esters, starch ethers, dialdehyde starches, andcationic starches. Starch occurs naturally inthe plants and its percentage vries with theplant and also in different parts of the sameplant. Corn (maize) sorghum grain wheat, rice, potato, tapioca, arrowroot and sago areamong the important sources of naturalstarches. The grains of barley, rye, oat, andthe millets are also employed in theproduction of starches.

Sugar is a universal sweetening agent andsugar - cane is the primary age - old source ofit. Sugar cane is a very important industrialcrop, accounting for about 60% of sugarproduction in the world. From the timesimmemorial the word “sugar” is being usedvariously to express delight as well as distrustsarcastically. Sugar has been used in humandiet through the functions of pancreas, depending on the quantity of sugarconsumed. It is must for human diet whentaken directly or indirectly through variouscarbohydrate containing food stuffs. Sugaras sucrose is important for energy andmetabolic activities. When sugar wasprepared from sugar cane in the beginningcannot be definitely stated, but brown sugaror gur (Jaggery) was the first known form ofsugar manufactured from sugar cane as wellas from wild date palm (phonnix sulvestris),palmyra palm (Borassus Flapellifar).

Baker’s yeast is an inseparable bakeryingredient to cause fermentation in the doughused to make bakery items. As a result offermentation we get soft and fluffy bakeryitems. In the present era there is anincreasing trend towards processed and fastfood consumption like bakery items. Whiledemand for bakery items is saturated indeveloped countries it is increasing at aconsistent pace in the developing nationswith increased demand for processed fooditems like pizza base, burger buns. Yeast is aunicellular microorganism which primarilyrequires sugars, water and warmth to stayalive. In addition, albumen or nitrogenousmaterial is also necessary for yeast to thrive. There are hundreds of different species ofyeast identified in nature, but the genus andspecies most commonly used for baking isSaccharomyces cerevisiae. The scientificname Saccharomyces cerevisiae, means ‘amold which ferments the sugar in cereal(saccharo-mucus cerevisiae) to producealcohol and carbon dioxide. Yeasts areusually spherical, oval or cylindrical in shapeand a single cell of S. cerevisiae is around8?m in diameter. The chemical action andgrowth of yeast that causes dough to risethen became apparent. Yeasts, bacteria, andmolds are fungi, vegetable growths, Yeastsare commonly egg shaped and about 0.01mm in diameter. The yeasts cell containscomplex organic substances called enzymeswhose characteristic is that they catalyze achemical reaction.
