Setup Default Options:

Once the file is open, use theTools-Option menu to startsetting up the file

Using the “Schedule” tab,

adjust default options asshown in the figure. Importantones are: scheduling fromstart date, duration entered indays, default task type is“Fixed Duration” and new

task are not  effort driven The third and fourth options

will not let the duration changeautomatically when resourcesare added or removed

from the “Advanced” tab, select the calendar you want to use thenclick the OK button

Setup Time Scale:

Use the right mouse button

on the Gantt chart calendar

and select Timescale.

Set the Middle Tier units asmonths labeled as shown

Also, set the Bottom Tier 

units as days labeled as

shown

Use the Size textbox toadjust the view of the Gantt

chart as desired

Then click OK

Specify Relationships (Dependencies):

In the predecessors column, type the row numbers of the

predecessors separated by commas

Alternatively, drag from the middle of one task (curser turns

into four arrows) into another task. Automatically, a

relationship will be inserted and predecessor ID is written

into the Predecessors column

The critical path(s) can be clearly shown by showing these paths in a different

pattern

To show critical path(s) in a different pattern, use the Format-Bar Styles 

option then choose the pattern you want for critical activities, as shown below:

Text tab to do that, as shown below. You may select to show the information

you want on the left side, right side, top, bottom, or inside the bar.

A milestone is a reference point that

marks a major event in a project and

is used to monitor the project's progress

Any task with zero duration is

automatically displayed as a milestone

Creating Milestones:

You can mark any other task of any duration as a

milestone

With the milestone selected in the grid, right click &select ”Task Information” 

On the “Advanced” tab, type the milestone duration in

the “Duration” box

Select the “Mark task as milestone“ check box, and

then click OK 

MS Project displays the milestone symbol in the

Gantt Chart view on the first or last day of the task

Change Activities Relationship Types:

The types of relationships between activities can be changed

from the Finish-to-start (FS) default relationships to any of

the other ones (SS, FF, or SF)

To do this for any two activities, double click on the link

between these two activities and then change the

Dependency Type as required. Notice that you can also

specify the Lag time as needed (see screen capture below):

The types of constraints of activities can be changed from the As-Soon-

As-Possible (ASAP) default constraint type to any of the other ones

To do this for an activity, select the activity and then from the Project 

menu select the Task Information option and choose the Advanced 

tab to change the Constraint type as required (see screen capturebelow):
