PROJECT Kaikoura road and rail tunnels Project sheet - Kaikoura tunnels.docx/ Page 1 of 2 Project name: Kaikoura road and rail tunnels Client: NCTIR Project date: 2017 - 2018 Project description The damage caused by the 7.8 magnitude November 2016 Kaikoura earthquake to the Main North Line railway (and SH1 along the east coast of the South Island) was unprecedented in New Zealand. There were 60 major damage sites along the MNL, including tunnels, bridges and embankments. Geotech have had two tunnel crews and support staff providing tunnel remediation services including: • Slip and debris clearance • Portal repair works • New portal establishment • Improvements to tunnel entry geometry • Ground and tunnel support through rock bolting, resin anchoring and grouting • Rock milling • Improvements to tunnel widths • Application of fibre reinforced shotcrete (FRS) • Repairs and replacement of damaged concrete liner • Installation of tunnel lighting Resources applied A range of resources were mobilised to Kaikoura to support the project, including: • Excavators • Road trucks • WA250 wheel loader • Toro 307 loader with mancage • Erkat milling machine mounted on PC300 • Tunnel lighting and fans • Compressors and gensets • Atlas Copco combi-cutter CC1700 • Hiab and work platforms • Bohler Jumbo drill rig • Marini drills • Clark 1500 grout pumps • Electric grout pump • Craelius injection grout pump • Atlas Copco Unigrout pump
