Lafarge’s Hydromedia® Ensures a Rut-free Open Grade Drianage Layer for Concrete HighwayThe Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway is an 11km stretch of Highway 401 designed to link Canada’s

busiest land border crossing at Windsor/Detroit, and the existing Highway 401. It was needed

to alleviate traffic congestion on local roads, which would allow the easy movement of goods

and people. The Ministry of Transport of Ontario and Infrastructure Ontario commissioned the

parkway that was constructed between 2011 and 2015.

Materials for Rut-Resistance Open Graded Drainage Layer Needed When Amico Infrastructures of Cambridge, Ontario won the open graded drainage layer (OGDL)

contract for the 3-lane wide 11km concrete-paved stretch of the Rt. Hon Herb Gray Parkway,

general manager Dwayne Dawson was excited and concerned. This was a huge job, spanning

13 months, but it also carried some risks. It would be important to adhere to the project

schedule to avoid overage penalties and provide a rut-free surface for another contractor to lay

the concrete pavement on top of.

Consultation with Lafarge on aggregates leads to cement-based Hydromedia®

Dawson reached out to the Lafarge local market area manager, as they were planning

a porous asphalt OGDL and needed aggregates and advice on mitigating rutting. The

manager convinced Dawson to use Hydromedia as it offers better control and is easier to

place than other options. Unilke an asphalt-based OGDL, Hydromedia remains stable when

a concrete pavement is being placed on top of it during hot summer days. That would

mean there would be no rutting caused by heavy equipment going over the OGDL. There

was some concern as most drainage layer projects in Canada have been asphalt based.

Hydromedia® Placed with Great ResultsIn August 2013, Amico began the OGDL construction. Hydromedia was placed to a 10mm

tolerance with a Vogele Super 2100 paver. Dawson noticed the results immediately, as the

material was easy to place. During the thirteen month long construction period, they kept

to their construction schedule, because of the ease of placement, so did not incur any

penalties. Amico was able to hand over a flat level surface for the next contractor to lay the

concrete pavement surface.

Dawson was pleased with the results as using Hydromedia kept costs down, improved

productivity and produced a high quality rut-free OGDL.
