Lights and Lasers Week 1

!The first week of camp!!! The week began with introductions to the camp staff and the students. We used ice breakers and games to engage all the campers. The focus for this week was lights and lasers. The students were able to experiment with light, electricity and other forms of energy. We learned how lasers work and their real world applications. In their final projects the students designed and programmed presentations as a summary for the week. The students began to understand the steps within the creative process.

Theme: Lights and Lasers Field Trips: LaserTag, Winterset Pool

Campers will know: • Parts of a laser • Vocabulary

Campers will able to: • Identify and label the parts of a laser. • Use mirrors and water to redirect lasers and light • Identify possible real world applications

Gears and Simple Machines Week 2

!This week we were lucky enough to have the same group of students back with 2 new additions. As a group we were able to pick up where we left off with the students understanding of the creative process. They are eager to help each other, and are motivated as a group. This week they were able to design and program Lego robotics. The students programmed final interactive presentations using a programming language developed by MIT known as Scratch.

Theme: Gears and Simple Machines Field Trips: Port Discovery, Winterset Pool

Campers will know: • Engineers use gears • Identify various gears and their uses

Campers will able to: • Design Catapults using rubber bands and popsicle sticks. • Use Lego and Gears to design and program 3D objects.

Architecture Week 3

We have a strong core group that has participated every week. Along with our goals and objectives, the students have the opportunity to learn to create in digital 3D space using Blender. The campers are getting a strong understanding of the basics of programming with Scratch. The campers are moving along a much faster pace, creating high quality work because of their understanding of the creative process. The creative process removes stress for them.

!4PROJECT STEAM MD.

Theme: Architecture Field Trips: American Visionary Art Museum, Winterset Pool

Campers will Know: • Identify various styles of architecture • Vocabulary • 3D forms !Campers will be able to : • Research various styles of architecture. • Plan and design a building using pencils. • Complete the final architectural design using mixed media. • Collaborate and design architecture using 3D forms made from paper.

Innovation and Technology Week 4

!!!!!!

We began the week by learning about computer history. The highlight for the week was the students had the opportunity to take apart old toys and tech in order to see how they worked. The students were able to label the various parts. The campers also enjoyed drawing the various tech objects from observation before and after deconstruction.

!5PROJECT STEAM MD.

Theme: Innovation and Technology Field Trips: Maryland Science Center , Swimming !Students will know: • The history of computers. • Moore's law. • The parts of a basic electric circuit. • The basics of programming. !They will be able to: • Deconstruct old hardware • Design and write a program that introduces a new invention. • Describe how the CPU and electric circuit will be used .

Creatures and Innovation Week 5

The campers move efficiently and quickly because they understand and are comfortable with the creative process. The highlight for this week were the overwhelming number of great ideas that had wonderful futuristic and real world applications. The students drew inspiration from Technology, Entertainment and Design( TED) talks and various personal aspects of their lives. The students were able to finish camp with presentations that focused on what they want to be when they grow up. This was an amazing summer. Project STEAM MD. will continue to assess all that we've learned throughout the school year and the summer. We thank you in advanced for your continued support as we look forward to the 2014-2015 school year with our before and afterschool program.

!6PROJECT STEAM MD.

Theme: Creatures and Innovation Field Trips: The Aquarium , Swimming !Students will know: • That innovation is inspired by nature. • Robotics and technology can advance by studying various forms

of life. !They will be able to: • Design a new invention inspired by animals. • Design and program a presentation. • Design a prototype using Legos.
