What is ‘self-care’?

• Taking an active interest in your health• Making small changes that you can do• Reading the Information booklet• This is part of it!

What do the kidneys do?

• Filter – remove waste and water from the blood (as urine, via the bladder)

• Clean the blood• Keep the bones healthy• Look after blood pressure

So, they are very important to our well being






Your kidney function: what your eGFR* blood test result means

*eGFR = estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate = how well your kidneys are working

STAGE eGFR KIDNEY FUNCTION

Stage 1-2 60-100 Normal

Stage 3a 45-60 Mild kidney damage - often related to age if the result is stable

Stage 3b 30-45 At risk of further damage - you can do a lot to help yourself

Stage 4-5 Below 30 You may be asked to see a specialist to help manage the things that can make kidney damage worse, such as high blood pressure






Classification of CKD (rev 2014)CKD is now classified by both estimated GFR (eGFR)

andthe level of protein in your urine (albumin:creatinine

ratioor ACR),

'G' denotes the GFR category and 'A' is used for the ACR

Category (A1–A3)

Both are an important measure of how well your kidneys are working and whether they are likely to get worse in the future






• Know your blood pressure• There are two numbers to know:

a top and a bottom number• Most people should have a top number

below 140 and a bottom number below 90

• If you have diabetes, the numbers should be below 130 and below 80
