MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION THANKS YOU

A total of $488.04 was donated by.175 couples who attended the second annual Muscular Dystrophy benefit dance on May 2 •

On a percenteage basis the attendance trophy was won by Boots 'N Slippers followed closely by the Genesee Dancers who had the most couples in point of numbers.

Plans are in the making for next year's dance which will be held on May 1, 1970.

The enthusiasm, shared by all who worked and danced, was a great example of the fine people active in Western square dancing. When a cure for the disease is found -you will all have had a part in helping. Thanks again from the Shaws; George, Una, Ralph, Barbara, Bruce, and Shirley.

PROMENADER is published by the Rochester Area Federation of Western Round and Square Dance Clubs Inc. 9 issues, October thru September.

CLUB Bafavia Twitlets

Camp out and its trail end dances will be history as you read this and another eventfull season is over. The Taylors, returning as chairmen of the closing event, promised us another absorbing weekend with Larry Dunn being assisted by Leo Parsons calling some squares and Betty Wolcott cueing some rounds. This is Larry's first anniversary with the club. As we became acquainted with Larry and his calling a year ago, we never expected he could be our regular caller at this point. But it has been a year of changes and the retiring presidents, Bill and Cathy Fendley, are to be congratulated for running the obstacle course to a successful year.

Our round dance program with the DeGraves culminated with a graduation on May 8th and a barbecue supper hosted by Myrtle and Harold George.

Attendance reached a climax on April 19th when 25 squares danced to guest caller, Bud Redmond. A mere 20 squares met on May 3rd. The pot luck supper on May 17th attracte the usual knife and fork set. Some dancing was accomplished despite all the activity at the tables. Installation of officers was also accomplished during the evening.

Our new presidents, Bill and Duffy Saunders, named the new committee chairman. Among them are Dolores and Phil Maines for Hospitality; Chet and Thelma Andrews for Refreshments; Sam and Audrey Tumminello for Special Events and Don and Lorraine Potter for Publicity.

We will be represented at the Buffalo Federation by Frank and Bobbie Auty who have been very active during their year as alternates. Gene and Jean Wright will fill the alternate role.

At Rochester our delegates will be Don and Lucille Palmer and Bus and Bonnie Gangi. The Palmers, who worked on Dance-0-Rama will be the reporters for this column. Good luck to all these brave, active people.

Don't hibernate all summer - consult our summer schedule.

tl Beaus Our biggest event since our last column, of course, was our graduation. We congratulate Art Harris on his accomplishments with this class. They are the most enthusiastic bunch with whom we've had the pleasure of dancing. They have been with us for two weeks now and have brought a wonderful spirit with them that has infected all of us. We heartily welcome them to our club. Of course it is written in the by-laws that some nonsense must accompany all graduation ceremonies and the "dance of the balloons" was - well - extraordinary! It would have been much smoother if Earl Budd's balloons had cooperated .•••• Don and Mary Waterman, Jerry and Louise Flynn and Reese and Muriel Cole attended the Utica Spring Festival. They reported that at this large dance three levels of dancing were offered - class level, challenge and hot hash and it seems that all dancers fit in somewhere ••••• Don and Marge Tracy and Ernie and Helen .Tohnson attended the 8th Toront International Square Dance Convention May 8 through 10 ••• Belle's and Beaus was well represented at the Muscular Distrophy Fund Raising Dance. For many of the recent grads it was the first time away from mother hen (Art)---

NEWS that is always quite an experience, remember? ....• The Lakeville and Livonia Railroad charter trip scheduled for June 8 will be a wonderful outing for the kiddies adults, too. See Ed Taylor for more information •••• o'l'he "Official Greeter" office, newly instituted this year, has been a hugh success ••• We understand that some of the fellows have turned down an offer of $25.00 for using their turn ••••• Have a good summer.

Boo f s 'h- S Ii p pets Stan Burdick put a little news of our club in his National Magazine. I quote, "On calling tours since a month ago. I ran into a tip or two of more practical value worth sharing. In Rochester, N.Y.,at the Boots 'N' Slippers Club, I was amazed at the novel and popular cheese and cracker refreshment item. There was no need for an elegant feed. Just coffee, the big tangy round of cheese from which everyone cut his own, and crackers. I was more mouse than man that night - felt sneaky going back for thirds. Try it at you club.", unquote.

Those that didn't go to the Muscular Distrophy dance, will be pleased to know we came home the 2nd year in a row with the trophy.

It seems one Gene Fox has gotten a nickname from another club. How about that, Giggles? Also, would you believe that a little jogging could hurt you? How about that Ray Paine?

Congratulations to Bob and Betty Riggs on their daughters' future wedding.

Howie and Arlene Newton, all your friends thoughts and prayers are with you at this very moment for your son's speedy recovery. May God let that be very soon.

Once more our year has come to an end. But we'll see you at Manitou Beach. Our sound system to be improved with more yak stacks.

P.S. 30.

Beginners class will be on Tues. Sept. 16, 23, and Three weeks to join up •.• happy dancing!

Countty Twirlers For those of you who danced with us at the 'Ole' Barn in April and May, we hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we enjoyed having you.

We held a "fun" night on April 18th and our theme was "Baby Days". This was highlighted by our own Rogues Gallery of baby pictures of club members, a tricycle race, which Tom Pluckn■tte won by a mile, and a baby bottle drinking contest. Don't know what was in those bottles, but they were emptied pretty fast!!! Jim McQuade did a fine job, as usual, but we didn't see him sitting in the highchair that was provided for him!

On April 26th, we had 22 nervous couples join the club.

Along with the usual ceremonies of receiving diplomas and badges, Angel Awards were given to the Boeffs, Gottschalks, Harris', and Bill Rauch. A special recognition was given to Hal Pyritz for his outstanding help with our classes over the past years. To top off the graduation, our new members had to place shoe boxes on their feet and prove it isn't necessary to HOP to square dance. All in all, it was a fun night and a good time was had by a~ 1. It is our sin,~ere hope that all of our new members will enjoy fun, activity and good fellowship to be found in square dancing. A hardy welcome to all of you.

Our "Bouquet" for June goes to those 22 new club members who worked long and hard and are sure to be an asset to the club.

Country Twirlers, don't forget to keep July 19th open for our picnic at Timberline Park, LeRoy, New York.

As had been said before, we cannot let the dancing season close without a compliment to the hard working staff who make the PROM~NA'JER possible. The clubs are well infamed because of their efforts .••• which contributes greatly to the success of all the club dances.

So long for now until September •••• but keep dancing this summer!!!

Genesee Dancets We would like to congratu]ate the Shaws, Barb and Ralph,

a source of great satisfaction for these fine people to have contributed their efforts to such a worthy cause. The Genesee Dancers were represented by 39 couples, not quite enough to win the trophy but we sure tried!

Dorothy Cooper left Harry in charge (of cooking and dishwashing) while she flew to Kentucky in April to visit her niece ••••• Al and Ruth Niblack spent a weekend dancing at Hidden Valley with Ken Anderson ••••• Al and Blanche Hoffman left on May 3rd for Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. His brother Norb is also vacationing on the West Coast and they expect to meet in Los Angeles.

Our last regular club dance of the season was May 8th and everyone there made the most of it. Art got us off to a good start with some "quenches" and the friendly mood continued for the evening. We are eagerly awaiting our trail end dance on May 17th. With the talented and capable committees who are working on the details, it promises to be an outstanding event.

This year 7 dances have been scheduled for the summer at the 1st Presbyterian Church in East Rochester. Don Duffin will be calling and this will be a very good opportunity for the newer dancers to keep in practice and be ready for Fall. These dances will be on the firs\ third and fifth Tuesdays of June, July and August at 8:00 P.M.

Happy vacationing to one and all •

Geneva Fr-iendship~qs. Our Trail End Dinner Dance is over, and last year's officers wish to express their appreciation to all the dancers who attended our dances last winter and made Geneva Friendship Squares successful.

We want to thank Bud and Millie Woodley for their help with the beginners. There are other couples who help with the beginners but Bud and Millie have attended nearly all the classes for three years.

We want to thank Art and Lucy Masteller for representing us at the Federation and for taking charge of Decoration for the Dance-0-Rama. We want to extend our sympathy to Lucy whose brother was killed when his plane crashed just three days before the Dance-0-Rama.

We thank Don and Geneviere Miller who took charge of refreshments when Caroline Neeb became immobilized with a back injury.

Many thanks to Joan and Bill Newman, founders of Geneva Friendship Squares, who cue our round dances and never missed a meeting all winter.

Thanks to our friends at Hobart College who permit us the use of Qulick Hall and the William Smith Gym for dancing.

We wish the new officers, whose names appear on the front page of the May issue of the Promenader, the Best Of Luck and assure them of our co-operation in any plans they may have for the success of Geneva Friendship Squares in 1969-1970.

To those who came to dance to Ken that night - our sincere apologies. His, too. Some things are beyond the abilities of even officers like ours. They~ furnish tapes and a free dance - so at least all who came could dance. This was truly a case of "due to circumstances beyond our control, etc, etc!"

Ken's three quarter of an hour refresher course before each of his dances is drawing an enthusiastic response from members and guests. We love to have you - please keep coming. For those who wish to test their mettle, there will be a half hour of "hot hash" at 10:JO. So, for all of those "above and beyond" - hang around!

Orchids to the Shaws - Senior and Junior - Joe Reilly and all those who helped to make the Muscular Distrophy the huge success it was. Every Club was represented. A marvellous evening for a marvellous cause.

This is our Swan Song, People, Our job - as reporters - is done. Before we leave, we'd like to say It's been a lot of fun. We tried to tell it "like it is," With a few little shots of humor. We tried to stick to hard bare facts And not a lot of rumor. Our thanks to the EKC-0 members Who gave us a tip or two. Remember the new reporters Are gonna depend on you!!! Thanks to Lew Deitz and the Sorensens For their patience and understanding. For correcting all our errors Without ever reprimanding!!!!!

Fiddle A Rounds That season has arrived again, and the first picnic of the season will be at the Tucker's on June 1st. (And hots at 99¢ a lb.)

The Tuckers, DeGraves, Whiteheads will be off to the Dance-A-Cade the last week of June. The Whiteheads, DeGraves and DeCesares all attended the spring dance of Lou Sudemeyer's in Buffalo.

The summer dance schedule for the F-A-Rs during July and August will be the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month.

Our new dance for May is "Seattle".

Millie Costich is back dancing the rounds with us but has not been able to square dance yet. Glad to have her and Tip participating in rounds. Maybe in the future she'll be able to square up again.

Ftiendship Sqs. Thanks for helping make the past dancing season, one of the best yet in our club history. We have a great group of new dancers, our dancing hall has been filled dance after dance, and the special dances have been greeted with great enthusiasm. We stole the Swingin' Eights banner, and they appeared in full force a week later to get it back and steal ours. Unfortunately the following week was their Trail End dinner so we will be requesting

?

our team of bandits to reverse the process this fall.

Meanwhile, don't forget the campout at Bonnie Brae, June 13, 14, and 15th. I think there are several new class members who will enjoy the opportunity to get back at us for some of our misdeeds. Especially me?

Trail end dinner is now history and our club will be taking a vacation til September 27th. Our beginners classes will open on September 29th, and it is upon these - still unknown people that the future heal th of our club depends. Please think about any friends you know who would enjoy our form of recreation and bring them to the open dance this fall. Don't forget to add a few miles to your dancing shoes this summer so you will be in condition to shake the rafters of the town hall this fall.

I rondequo if ~qs. June is busting our all over with weddings, graduations, banquets and the longed-for vacations. The Scotts will have two college graduation, a new grandchild and an anniversary trip to Maine. The Welch's son graduates in Windsor, Ontario, and then off they go to Williamsburg, Virginia. Tent trailer camping is gaining in popularity. The Deanes just added one for camping and the Hardings plan to sightsee coast-to-coast in one. That's the life! The Bubbs like the North to South route (Florida and Canada) and the Clarkes, recently returned from Florida, will journey in a cabin cruiser from the Thousand Islands to Ottawa via the Rideau River. We hear the Johnstons will move soon and have a basement to dance 6 squares.

Some square dancers are also good Scouts and will give a demo to Bill Wilcox's calling at the Arrowhead area Scout dinner.

While the Seymours and Johnstons danced the weekend away in Toronto, 20 couples bused to Syracuse for a funfilled evening. We discovered one old bag resting in the baggage rack (name of Jackie Hutchings) and wonder if Doug Shultz found his car. We're grateful to Florian Cxerniak and Carl Warschkow for the accordian accompaniment to our melodious renditions all the way home.

Congratulations to Jim Hughes for his nomination for Federation Vice President and to Kay Welch for Secretary.

By now we will have had a memory-filled 10th anniversary dinner-dance and be looking forward to our picnic from 2 to 10 P.M. at the Parkview Lodge in Webster Park. Bring the family, a dish to pass and table service. Coffee, meat and dessert will be provided. Any questions? Call the Brooks. See you in the fall!

Lirna Grand ~qs. We are soon nearing the end of the season at the Lima Town Hall. In fact only one more night of dancing in May. This will be on May 16th, ltQpen House" at which time all those who are interested in Western Square dancing are invited to attend, to participate in the fun, or just be spectators. Out of this group we are hoping to find some recruits for our class in the fall.

On May 23rd, there will be no dance in Lima but all

May 30th, being a Holiday, there will be no dance but on June 6th, our first night at the "Barn", in East Bloomfield, we are looking forward to meeting all our old friends and lots of new ones. A summer full of fun, guest callers and lots of surprises, is being planned. Our hosts for the month of June will be Joyce and Bill Walkley. They will be on hand to greet you and make you welcome.

Our Stork Badge wearer, is no longer wearing the badge, the stork visited their home three weeks ago and presented them with a bouncing baby boy. Congratulations Helen and Jerry Bischoping.

On Friday May 2nd, ·one or two couples attended the dance at Gates-Chili School, the proceeds of which went to the Muscular Dystrophy Fund. Because more members from Lima could not attend, the proceeds from Lima's dance that evening was also given to the Fund.

Will be looking forward to seeing you at the Barn June 6!

Lillian Stork, and Don and Mary Lou Mikel.

George and Heidi Betlem attended Ron Schneider's Cross Creek Weekend recently and at the end of April, they also traveled to Ohio for a weekend with George Jabbusch. They were joined by Ambrose and Dorothy Baker, Will and Rhoda Eagle, Don and Leah Huot, Jean Muench, Bernie and Doris Sixt, Don and Norma Weekes, and George and Elinor Wood who also enjoyed the Holiday Weekend with George Jabbusch, Dewey Berry, and Jack Lasry calling. While there we were glad to see and dance with Bart and Nita Gould, fomer Rollaways who recently moved to Ohio.

At our Mother's Day dance, we were sorry to hear that Al Kirvan, John Hayford, and Howie and Arlene Newton's son have been hospitalized. We wish them all a speedy recovery.

We have also learned that Carl and Anita Warschkow are going to be handling a lot of the work fa~ Promenader next year. This fun-loving and hard-working couple sure deserve a pat on the back and we want to be among the ones to extend it.

Swi11gin' Eights Trail-End's now a beautiful memory of a delicious sitdown dinner at The Statement, super movies and ingenious entertainment, mixed with some square dancing. Our last regular dance saw a good crowd, including our graduates and many guests, and a delicious cake for a change of menu. We missed Mike Prado cueing rounds but were most honored to have The Chief himself, Charlie Tucker, substituting. Wishing you completely well fast Mike.

We hear Tom Trainor distinguished himself on the staff at the Toronto Convention, making a big hit even with challenge dancers. Vreelands trailered to the convention successfully.

Tink being another Kodak transfered to Tennessee, Lucille is busy with home building plans as well as moving. Leichts enjoyed a visit home from son Ed enroute from Ft. Dix to Army-Na..-y Music School at Norfolk, Va. Judy Wilcox is more than busy between Bill's increased calling, Ironda Shop moving due to the tremendous success with it's Square Dancers' needs and daughter Sandra's marriage to Dave Schiltz August 16th. Judy is making the bride's and the brides-~aids' dresses. Want a PUPPY FOR FREE? Just contact Judy Wilcox.

The Ken Plains danced with Lasry's club in Miruni while touring Florida. How I envied Dorothy and George Riesen berger' s Jamaica Jamboree with Brundage' s United Squares. They toured a banana plantation - How I love bananas - paddled a brunboo raft lazily down river and walked up the Dunns River Falls and much more. Last but far from least, Alan and Bertha Dennison missed trail-end because of a five weeks trip to Europe. Just waiting to hear all about that •

Hope to see you all dancing somewhere as you follow this month's summer dancing calendar - where old friends meet again and greet new friends.

Page 11: PROMENADERsquaredancingrochester.org/history/Promenader-OCR/1969-06OCR.pdfKessler, Mike and Jessie Kramer, Frank and Jeanne McGinnis, Al and Millie Moyse. Don and Dorothy O'Connor,

we were all happy to see Bob Kausch back and dancing on May 6th.

On May 13th we welcomed and shared the evening with teens who were "demonstrating" their "abilities" instead or their "hostilities". Exhilarating!

Jim Holden printed the tickets to be sold by Bev and Ed Simpson and Lynn and Mewenn Britt for our Spring Fling on May 20th. Peg Huse arranged the program schedule, Jim Tears printed it, and Lila and Harold Pierce did final compilation of it. Judy GraYett and Don Aman decorated the Greece Grange Hall. A fine dinner was followed by a skit by Fayne and Paul Doering, assisted by Pres. Dick Benner, which was a sequel to the skit presented last year and consisted of a preview of the new TV show "Square Celebrities". Our Beginners class became Intermediates as of this evening and they, too, presented a skit with Ed and Barb DeMerritt heading up the fun. Marguerite and Bernie Nesbitt and Jean and Gene Pasquale concocted refreshments for the thirsty dancers. Our thanks to all who helped make this such a successful event.

We will be celebrating Xmas in July at the Podgers on the 12th of - yes, we said "July". This will include a gift exchange, dinner, swimming and dancing. Call Peg Huss at 663-7284 for more information on this or her Round Dance Basics classes which started on May-26th and go on every Monday evening in June, .Q! for further information (available about late August) on our September lJth (and 14?) club picnic. So far we have 4-10 P.M. on the 13th outlined for activities which !!!!!:I extend into overnight camping and more dancing on Sunday, but plans aren't firm yet.

Don't forget our summer dances at Bethany Church Hall (1000 Dewey Ave. - near Stone Rd.)

1'wirl A Rounds Surprise! Bet you didn't think we would be reporting this month, did ya? To be truthful, neither did we.

At our May 7th dance, Howie and Dot handed out diplomas to: The Sylors; Gangis; Copela.nds; Shirley Kirran and Dave Seeger and Lows. Jack and Agnes Low have been with us quite some time and finally made the grade and received their diplomas. Gordon Copeland was presented a C-A-R-E rackage, "Cope lands' Assortment of Rubbers Etcetera." They no doubt will come in handy by the looks of his shoe.

Nice to have the Kreuzers' back with us. They received their badges, a while back. Welcome to the club.

Our Trail-End dinner was switched to Sunset Lanes due to Wantkes' laying a rug.

The Camp-out is scheduled for June 6-7-8 at Bonnie Brae. All Round Dancers welcomed.

Falls! DeGraYes's and Dolans took a fast trip to Oneida to dance with the "Turning 2's" one Saturday evening. Had a nleasant time dancing to Lucy Pauls' cueing. Of course, Howie just couldn't be out done, so he did a "back-side-through" on the thruway, on the way home. Explain this one HowieJ Ha. Just had to get one more thing on you before we call it quits for this year. We all think vou and Dot are the greatest and will be looking forward to more fun come September.

As of this writing Al Kirran came through his operation

with flying colers. May you be up and out and back danein« with us before long.
