FALL 2011 AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER AND SERVICE PROVIDER. Promises to Keep www.chail.org State of the Children’s Home Since 1866, Children’s Home has been serving children and families in the Peoria community. We have faced many challenges and changes over the years - Peoria’s population has grown from a mere 25,000 people, there have been foreign wars, economic downturns, and even the Great Depression. Throughout the years and despite these challenges, Children's Home has endured. Today we find ourselves in a sustaining economic downturn and with a state budget crisis that has had a dramatic effect on human service organizations everywhere. “Operating within our means” has taken on an even greater meaning and we have had to make some very difficult decisions including downsizing our workforce (including upper management positions), implementing operational efficiencies, maximizing our facilities by eliminating lease agreements and reducing benefits to our employees. As a result of these decisions and because of the vision and efforts of our previous leaders, however, I am proud to report that Children’s Home remains fiscally sound and we anticipate being able to weather any “rainy days” that lie ahead. It has not been easy, but we are steadfast in our mission and our staff continue to respond to the needs of children and families in our community with the same dedication and commitment we have become known for over the years. Our focus is on the future and our new strategic plan, “Vision 2015,” that includes specific priorities and ways in which we will venture into the future. At the end of this issue of Promises to Keep, you will find our Annual Report. While it is a greatly condensed report from those you have seen from us in the past, the information is significant. Serving more than 2,900 children over the course of a year doesn’t just happen, particularly in light of these difficult and trying times. It takes a team of passionate, committed professionals who not only believe in our mission, they feel it; it is evident every day in their work with the children and youth of this community. In addition to providing high-quality services, Children’s Home must also operate from high-quality facilities. Currently, three of our largest buildings are over 75 years old and in need of specific attention. Proper upkeep and maintenance of these structures is critical as this is where children and families receive our services. We must make these investments for future generations of children who come through our doors. Not only do these investments help the kids, but staff also need these facilities to continue providing the high quality of care that has been consistent throughout our history. The future at Children’s Home is filled with lofty goals and dreams. Moving forward, we must give attention to these and other priority areas for our kids, their families and our staff. The stakes are high and the challenges are great, but we cannot let that stop us. We are thankful for your passionate commitment to partnering with us to fulfill our mission of “Giving Children a Childhood and Future.” ® CLETE WINKELMANN PRESIDENT & CEO

FROM THE OFFICE OF COMMUNITY & DONOR RELATIONS

Dear Friends,

I am so pleased to be able to introduce myself as the recently appointed VicePresident of Community and Donor Relations at the Children’s Home!

I first became acquainted with the Children’s Home over 10 years ago and wasgenuinely amazed not only at the array of programs and services, but at thedifference being made in the lives of children and families right here in ourcommunity. It did not take me long to recognize the Children’s Home as a quiethero in the Peoria area; and I knew at that moment I wanted to be a part of it.

I waited a long time for this dream role, but here I am; and I could not be morethrilled! I am anxious to further our mission and share the many ways you can joinme in this effort.

As we move into our Holiday Season with our “A Light In Every Window” Campaign, when caring neighbors, community members and long-time friends of Children’s Home send a contribution to receive a candle light fortheir window, my vision is to take this effort to another level. Through “The Light the Way Society,” the candlelight can shine brightly throughout the year. Membership in this Society will involve a pledge to theChildren’s Home of $1,100 annually for 10 years. Our goal is modest…20 new members each year for 10 yearswhich translates into $2.2 million for the children and families who need our services! The reward of member-ship? The money raised through the Light the Way Society will enhance our ability to protect, teach and healchildren and families in our care, thus ensuring our children have a childhood and future full of endlesspossibilities. I am reminded of the truth behind the quote fromMargaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small groupof thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” So,I ask you to consider joining this small group of people who have the ability to make significant changes in achild’s life.

Another effort I will be working on ardently is our legacy group – the Walter and Mary Barker Society, namedafter prominent Peoria philanthropists who also were deeply involved and committed to the Children’s Home.Walter and Mary understood the value of planning ahead and knew that children sometimes have the greatestneeds yet the smallest voice in our society. They worked diligently to combine their concern for children withtheir ability to make a difference and, in doing so, have helped improve the lives of thousands of children in ourcommunity. Our Walter and Mary Barker Society consists of dedicated individuals who have made a financialcommitment through their will or estate plan to the children and families served by Children’s Home. BarkerSociety members have a deep concern for children and families who are hurting and troubled and play acrucial role in making our quality services available to those in need not only now, but well into the future.Membership in this Society is offered to anyone who includes Children’s Home in their will or estate plans.

I would truly enjoy the opportunity to visit with you to discuss these two opportunities, or all of the otherwonderful work we are doing here at the Children’s Home. I hope you will contact me so we can schedule a timeto visit – here at the Children’s Home, in your home or at another location of your choice.

On behalf of everyone at Children’s Home, we thank you for all you do to help us fulfill our mission of givingchildren a childhood and a future!

Shining Brightly for Children & Families,

Live Mannequin DisplayOn Friday, May 27, the Children’s Home’s “Dirty Laundry Project” camealive for its 4th annual public awareness campaign to draw attention to theconsistently high rate of teen pregnancies in Peoria County and promotedevelopmental assets that allow youth to thrive. Children’s Home staff andcommunity members volunteered to pose as live mannequins at 3:46 p.m.wearing Dirty Laundry Project t-shirts to represent the 346 teens who gavebirth in 2008.

The Dirty Laundry Project began with a group of students in Peoria whorealized they had a story to tell, and messages they wanted to get out to thecommunity. As they received education regarding sexual health topics, they felt strongly that they should havelearned this information earlier in their lives. Instead of letting regrets be regrets, they decided to take action andcreate change. Their vision: to see the next generation of students equipped with knowledge they did not have andadults motivated to talk openly and honestly with youth about sexual health topics to prevent sexual health issues.

The Dirty Laundry Project campaign is designed to educate and empower youthto raise awareness of youth related sexual health issues in our community. We hopeto break the veil of silence surrounding sexual health. The campaign presentsmessages from youth, myth busters, or general facts. Our mission is to inspireparents to have a lifelong discussion with their children about sexual health andpersonal values. The campaign encourages educators to provide factualinformation early and often in their classrooms to create well-informed studentsand empowers students to take an active role in their own sexual health by askingquestions and making well thought out educated decisions.

Each year a t-shirt is created for every teenage girl who gave birth in Peoria County during the most recent year datais available. The t-shirts are designed with messages that represent both the experiences of those affected by anunplanned teenage pregnancy as well as information teens want parents to know and that may help the nextgeneration learn soon enough to help them make positive and educated decisions in their life. The t-shirts aredisplayed in the community to raise public awareness of teen pregnancy in our community.

It is astonishing to consider the impact this beautiful resource hashad on the children and families involved with Children’s Homesince it was gifted to us by the Robert E. Gilmore family in 2004.Through September 2011, Scott’s Prairie has had 1,409 visitors.October and November will increase that number significantly.

A Springfest was held in May for the students of Kiefer School andour youth who live in our Residential Programs. Youth spent timecreating pieces of items taken directly from nature, playing outdoorgames, face painting and nature walks. A great time was had by all.

During the Residential camping days in August, one of our AmeriCorpsmembers, Jessica Anderson, led nature art classes with the youth. Jessicahad easels and all of the necessary art utensils set up on the levee by thepond and asked each group paint the lake as their afternoon project.

The 4-H garden program has beenextremely successful so far this year.Youth from our Residential Programassist our Scott’s Prairie Site Manager,Alex Fuller, with growing a variety offruits and vegetables including corn, okra, green beans, tomatoes,

cucumbers, squash, several variety of peppers, lettuce, collard and mus-tard greens, watermelon and more. When ripe, staff are offered the op-portunity to purchase items through an inner-agency Farmer’s Market. Aprofit of almost $400 has been made to date. Those funds go right backinto the garden project for seed, tools and other items making it a verywell-rounded and beneficial program for our kids.

The last issue of Promises to Keep included an announcementabout five acres of land at Scott’s Prairie being enrolled in theUSDA’S Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), providing for theconservation and restoration of much-needed wildlife habitatalong with many educational benefits for our kids. A variety ofnative prairie grasses and flowers were planted to enhance thearea and provide wildlife habitat and we are pleased to nowreport that the CRP ground is a great success. The main 4.1 acreplot grew much better than expected. Aside from all the foxtail, you can see many tall blades of Big Bluestem, Switchgrass and In-dian grass. We also have Illinois Bundleflower, Canada Wildryeand Black-eyed Susans strewn throughout the main plot thoughnot as visible just yet. It is anticipated that this section will reallytake-off next year and interpretive educational hikes for classeswill be in session by

this time next year. The “Pollinator” plot was a guinea pig projectof sorts for both the Children’s Home and the USDA as it is thefirst time they have ever done this with the CRP. The plot did notgrow as well as anticipated but it is believed the seeds are lyingdormant until next season.

Plans for the future include pursuing grant opportunities forbuilding a berm at the rock formation to create a fish raising area, marketing our low-ropes course to area business and communitygroups as a team-building activity and retreat site and replacingseveral fruit trees in the orchard.

The Forgotten InitiativeIf you haven’t heard of The Forgotten Initiative, we’requite sure it won’t be long before you do.

Bloomington resident, Jami Kaeb, founded theministry after beginning a journey in 2009 to adopt achild from the United States, even though she andher husband, Clint already had three children – twobiological and one adopted from Guatemala. At thebeginning of their journey, they wanted to bringhome a healthy baby with no issues but soon realizedhow difficult that outcome is so, they began consider-ing children with problems. During their two yearjourney, their eyes were opened to “the child in fostercare,” particularly children and youth with issues andchallenges because these children are much moredifficult to adopt. While participating in the series ofclasses required to become a foster parent, Jami sawthe environment foster children and their parentsendure during supervised visitation and was struck bytheir cold, institutional feel. As a result, Jami began“Project Sunshine” in 2010 out of a desire to createfriendly spaces for kids during this dark time in theirlives. The first project involved mobilizing friends toraise money for new furniture and toys to fill tworooms at the Department of Children and FamilyServices in Bloomington. Following that project, theycompleted a similar effort in two rooms at CatholicCharities and then at the Peoria DCFS office. Withevery room makeover completed, The ForgottenInitiative hopes children will know how very specialthey are.

Simultaneous to the Project Sunshine efforts, Jamifound other ways to help foster kids and their families, conducting drives for diapers and school supplies, creating a birthday club where volunteers send happybirthday letters to kids in foster care, and establishinga prison edition of Project Sunshine which recreated asmall space at the Pontiac Correctional Center wherechildren visit their incarcerated parents.

Finally, Jami formed The Forgotten Initiative in Aprilof this year, running various programs she created tohelp children in foster care.

The Children’s Home has been the very fortunaterecipient of this phenomenal initiative throughdonations of diapers, gift cards used to buy clothingfor a child in relative placement and several “journeybags” – backpacks filled with items for kids when theyfirst come into care - and, most recently, the ProjectSunshine volunteers conducted a complete re-do ofour Foster Care visiting and waiting rooms. Theirwork is nothing less than awe-inspiring.

We can confirm that Jami and Clint and the entireForgotten Initiative ministry are fulfilling theirmission “to bring joy and purpose to the foster carecommunity.” We thank you for your heartfeltcommitment and for bringing your incredible workto the Children’s Home Foster Care Program.

Soon Jami and her amazing group are going to haveto change their name because they are already ontheir way to being anything but forgotten.

We would like to take time to give special recognition to our good friends at ErieInsurance’s Peoria branch. Over athree year period, this amazing group has donated more than $60,000 to theChildren’s Home!

Our children at Kiefer School finally have a playground.Since Kiefer School moved to our Academy Campus inAugust of 2010, they were without a playground until earlyJune of this year when a playground system complete withmulch for padding on the ground was installed thanks to a$10,000 donation from Erie Insurance’s Peoria Branch.Volunteers from the community including staff fromAeropostale came out in force to assist our AmeriCorpsmembers and maintenance staff in completing theproject. This was a fantastic collaboration beginning withthe generosity of Erie Insurance and ending with theplayground’s completion by several volunteers. The kidslove it – and the teachers do too.

The Children’s Home was the fortunaterecipient of the proceeds from the PeoriaBranch of Erie Insurance’s Annual CharityGolf Outing held June 10 at Quail MeadowsGolf Course in Washington.

The Keepsacks for Kids Project strives to help heal the psychological wounds thathomelessness can cause by presenting to displaced children a tangible possessionthat represents safety, security, hope, and home. The project also serves to increasepublic awareness of our local homeless problem and children in crisis.

We need your help to bring warmth, comfort and security to those in need in Central Illinois.Through the 2011 Children’s Home Youth Connect Keepsacks for Kids project; you can be part ofbringing hope to others. People of all ages and abilities are needed to help by both making anddonating blankets or by volunteering at the event October 22nd at the RiverPlex in Peoria.

Don’t miss an opportunity to be a part of the Keepsacks for Kids project and help make a differencein the lives of children and families who are homeless and in need in our community. It’s a wonderfulexample of our community’s commitment to providing a sense of security to children and familieswho have very little to call their own.

Please contact Emily Happach at 687-7275 or [email protected] for additional details.

Last year, because of the compassion our communityshowed, the kids at Children’s Home enjoyed a brighter andhappier holiday season. We hope you will consider makingthat possible again this year.

If you would like to provide a child with items from his/herpersonal “Wish List,” or provide gifts from our general wishlist to children of all ages, please contact Emily Happach at309.687.7275 or [email protected]. She will be happy toanswer your questions and help you make a choice that bestsuits you.

On behalf of everyone at Children’s Home, we thank you for your support of our kids and familiesthis holiday season.

Thank you to Elmwood Junior High! Mrs.Janovetz and Erica Kane brought a gift of newshoes from Toms Shoes for our kids. In 2006,American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriendedchildren in Argentina and found they had noshoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, hecreated TOMS, a company that would matchevery pair of shoes purchased with a pair ofnew shoes given to a child in need. One forOne. Blake returned to Argentina with a groupof family, friends and staff later that year with10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by TOMScustomers.

Thank you to Apostolic Church of Washingtonfor collecting and donating all these backpacksfilled with school supplies for our kids. Greatlyappreciated.

We thank the Eureka College Resident Advisors for comingtogether as such a great team to help make our Youth FarmCampus more beautiful! Eureka College Advisors rule.

Volunteers (l-r) Bill Ridgely, Saskia Michl,Linda Eskildsen, and Angie Yoches fromCaterpillar’s Morton facility HR/RecruitingDepartment helped paint fencing at Scott’sPrairie on a Friday in July. Thank you.

Students from Bradley University’s Burger Center on StudentLeadership spent a beautiful early April Saturday withChildren's Home making significant improvements to oursupervised independent living homes. Thank you all for sharingyour time and talent.

Staff from the Heartland Partnership &Economic Development Council (EDC) forCentral Illinois volunteered their time andtalent to paint at the Children's Home YouthFarm Campus on a hot July day. Manythanks to you!

The Children’s Home would like to thank the Peoria chapter of the Real Estate Staging Association(RESA) for the complete re-do of the dining hall at the Children’s Home Youth Farm Campus in July. The project plan included updating the flooring, painting, replacing some of the tables, and addingadditional seating and window treatments. The overall goal was to make the space more comfortable, inviting and home-like for the young people who eat there every day. Volunteers spent about fourdays transforming the space. The décor itself, besides being beautiful, has a calming effect on thekids. One of the kids exclaimed, “Thank you. It makes us feel good to have a nice place to eat.” Theproject was organized by Traci Molendi with RESA who organized numerous volunteers and donationsto complete the project. We are truly grateful to everyone involved in this project.

Hooray for Volunteers…

For one of their classes, Kelli Mullen and friendsfrom Bradley University made and donated severalfleece blankets for this year’s Keepsacks for Kidsactivity. Thank you, ladies.

We are incredibly grateful to the CrossroadsUMC in Washington’s Vacation Bible School forthe very thoughtful donation of new pillows andbedding, personal care items, toys, art supplies, electronic equipment, and more. Shortly afterthat donation, the Crossroad’s Youth Ministrydonated over 50 brand new backpacks filled withback-to-school items for the kids in our program. We cannot thank both of these groups enough.

The Children’s Home was chosen by IVCstudents Jim Mitchell and Katie Herath tobe the recipients of a project from theirEveryday Leadership class whereby anyonewho donated to their “Connects us onelink at a time” project would receive apaper link with their name on it and a wrist-band made out of bandanas. Jim and Katiechose the Children’s Home because theywanted to help kids. Thank you, Jim andKatie, for being a great example of howyouth can get involved in philanthropy.

In early April, this beautiful, special young lady came to theChildren’s Home with her two younger sisters and her parentsbecause she had literally hundreds of Beanie Babies she wanted todonate to the Children’s Home. During her visit, explained thatshe received the Beanie Babies while she was a patient at St. Judeat the age of 3 when she was diagnosed with Acute LymphocyticLeukemia. It was incredibly touching that such a young girl whohad received Beanie Babies for comfort during such a traumaticand scary experience now wanted to offer that same comfort toother kids. We offer our most sincere thanks to Alexis for her kindand generous heart and to her parents for raising such an ex-traordinary young lady.

We appreciate the time and talents of our friends fromCaterpillar for choosing the Children’s Home for Heart ofIllinois UnitedWay Day of Caring projects. Pictured here is onegroup who spent time at Scott’s Prairie repairing a fence, weed-ing the garden and other outdoor jobs. THANK YOU.

More Cheers for Volunteers…
