Promoting Forest Stewardship Through Education Spring 2020 Elementary Education at the Logging Conference This year, 753 students and 112 teachers and chaperones from 14 schools attended the Oregon Logging Conference School Tours. Students learned about trees and their many uses, were exposed to the diversity of careers in the woods, and learned what it is like to be a field forester. A highlight of the day was a tour of the big equipment, where students saw the big machines up close and learned how they are used in forest operations. We are honored to be part of this exciting and long-standing program that gives youth an intro- duction to forest management and builds early awareness about the many job opportunities in our local communities. 1 Forests Today & Forever Left: Students posing during the equipement tour (photo credit Heidi Leib); Top right: Talk About Tree Instructor teaches students to identify trees; Middle right: students meet a forester and tools of the trade; Bottom right: students and chaperones learning how the big equipement works in the forest. Forest Today & Forever’s 2020 Annual Meeting

One hundred and seventy-five supporters attended our annual meeting in January. The breakfast hour gather-ing had many highlights, including a compelling key-note address by Casey Roscoe, Seneca’s Senior VP of Public Relations. Casey engaged the audience as she shared stories that highlight the importance of forestry to Oregon and the success of the wood products indus-try. Using her personal storytelling about Seneca’s leg-acy as an example, Casey encouraged the audience to tell their own stories—i n effect, helping to highlight the broader story of how timber has and continues to ben-efit Oregonians. The event also included a presentation by Forest Field Day students and concluded by recogniz-ing the 2019 Volunteer of the Year (see below).

A word from our 2019 Volunteer of the Year It was a pleasure to honor Bob Johnson as the 2019 Volunteer of the Year at the 2020 annual meeting. Here is a statement from Bob that reflects why he is so great!

I have been fortunate to help with Forest Field Days since the mid-1990s. Along with hundreds of other volunteers, the landowners who open their property to Forest Field Days, and organizations/individuals who have financially supported FFD, we have made this fine program happen for thousands of middle school age students. That’s a good feeling! Long ago, when I was in sixth grade in Corvallis, I attended an outdoor forest education day. I remember a forester showing us kids how to use an increment borer to measure a tree’s age and radial growth. It’s a special memory. These days when I’m instructing at the Timber station of a Forest Field Day, I show the middle schoolers how to use an increment borer. I see the same excitement in these students that I remember when I was in sixth grade so many years ago! It’s a neat feeling and I am glad to be part of this ‘hands-on’ forestry education. -Bob Johnson
