This year's Summer Reading Challenge is Mischief Makers; celebrating the80th anniversary of the much-loved comic, Beano.
Children taking part in the Challenge this year will follow clues to exploretheir colourful collector’s map of Beanotown; meeting Dennis, Gnasher andfriends along the way. As children read library books, they will collectspecial stickers to help them find the mysterious buried treasure!
Mischief Makers will celebrate adventure, friendship, reading and fun and is a must for all children who want to live in the moment and be themselves.

Following feedback from libraries, this year's core pack will return
to a fold-up poster format and will include 3 sets of sticker sheets.
Each sheet will include 1 sticker with scratch and sniff inks
(so 3 smelly stickers in total!).
Children participating in the Mischief Makers Challenge will follow
clues to explore a colourful map of Beanotown, meeting Dennis,
Gnasher and friends along the way. They will collect special
stickers to help them find the mysterious buried treasure!
Each core pack contains:
l 100 collector posters - pre-creased and delivered folded
l 100 sets of 3 types of sticker sheets
As usual, there will be space on the collector poster for children
to keep track of their progress and rate the books they’ve read
as well as other fun activities. The collector poster is easy for children to
fold up and transport to and from the library.
Please note: Each of the three sticker sheets can be easily separated into
two smaller sheets (they are perforated), thus creating six mini sheets of
stickers if required. This enables staff to give out an individual sheet per visit
over 6 visits, or a sheet per book read.

Each year The Reading Agency asks all Summer Reading Challenge co-ordinators to submit
an online evaluation form. The results of the evaluation form, along with the sales figures for
each promotional item, helps us to decide what items are produced for the following Challenge.
The promotional items listed remain popular with children and are good value for libraries.
Promotional StickersEach sheet contains 35 full-colour stickers with 8 designs.
These stickers can be used for a variety of purposes, including
identifying children in activities and for use with the pre-school card
(item 17, page 6).

Medals Children really do treasure the medals, and they can be given out at special
award events in libraries, schools or other venues. Gold finish, non-allergic
metal composition and packed in individual plastic bags.
Available as a themed Mischief Makers 2018 medal (English or Welsh).
Also this year, following library feedback, we are piloting a generic
Summer Reading Challenge top-up medal which can be bought to ensure
you don't run out of this hugely popular reward (English only).
Medals are not suitable for children under 3 years.

FOR PRE-SCHOOLERSFollowing library feedback, we have decided to introduce a large gold sticker for pre-school children
completing the mini challenge in 2018. The design will be based on the themed Mischief Makers medal
and will provide a safe and cost-effective reward for younger participants.

families with younger children to regularly borrow and read books over the summer, especially if older siblings are taking

The volunteer recruitment poster is beingprofessionally designed in consultation withyoung people and libraries. It will feature theword ‘volunteer’ repeated several times incolourful text, plus quotes form young peoplewho volunteered in 2017 about the value ofthe experience.

READING HACK YOUNG VOLUNTEER MATERIALSLast year almost 8,000 young people volunteered in libraries across 163 UK local authorities, gaining new skills, encouragingchildren to read and helping to make the Challenge a roaring success.
We now refer to all young volunteers (aged 13-24) as Reading Hack volunteers. This is to keep all young people’s workunder one strong, recognisable brand. Service chargeThe service charge is £69.75 per authority, which covers distribution and also goes
towards the costs of creating and maintaining the online resources and website.
Additional materials and delivery pointsCarriage and packaging to one delivery point per authority is covered by the
