- HOLY OIL -

(White Vestments)

DIVINE LITURGY OF THE CHRISM- HOLY OIL -

ORTHODOX GREGORIAN (WESTERN) RITE

This liturgy may only be prayed by thepresiding diocesan (Arch)Bishop (or one

retired from that office), Metropolitan, Pri-mate, Patriarch, Bishop Superior General,or Bishop Abbot. It may never be prayed by

a Priest, or an suffragen or auxiliaryBishop.

(Preparation and some forms of anointingprimarily relative to Holy Thursday)

Holy Chrism or Holy Oil is composed primarilyof Olive Oil and Balsm. Balsm is simply oil ofan aromatic, resinous substance that is ex-tracted from (the wood of) certain trees orplants, especially those belonging to the tere-binthine group or family. It is primarily oliveoil with the addition of various aromaticessences, patterned after that described inExodus 30:22-33. It can be made by anybishop, but in smaller jurisdictions it is madeby the primate, who then distributes it.

Common proportions in places where balsmor oil essences are difficult to obtain are:Approximately one gallon or four liters of HolyOil composed of three quarters olive oil, one-eighth wine, and the one-eighth balance beingroughly equal proportions of (oils of the follow-ing where possible) Orange, Cinnamon, Nut-meg, Cloves, Balsam, Benzoin, Frankincense,Jasmine, Musk, Ambergris, Civet, Lemon,Bergamot, Myrrh and other aromaticessences. (Romans do not use wine, and pre-pare three oils: one for Extreme Unction, onefor anointing those who are to be Baptized andfor anointing the priest’s hands at his ordina-tion, and one for the Sacrament of Chrisma-

tion or Confirmation, anointing the Bishop’sforehead at his consecration as bishop, conse-cration of chalice, paten and star, dedicationof a church or altar.)

Let us pray that God ouralmighty Father will blessthis oil so that all who areanointed with it may beinwardly transformed andcome to share in eternalsalvation. God our maker, source of all growth in holi-ness, accept the joyfulthanks and praise we offerin the name of yourChurch. In the beginning,at Thy command, the earthproduced fruit-bearingtrees. From the fruit of theolive tree Thou hast pro-vided us with oil for holychrism. The prophet Davidsang of the life and joy thatthe oil would bring us inthe sacraments Thy love

hast given to us. After theavenging flood, the dovereturning to Noah with anolive branch announcedThy gift of peace. This wasa sign of a greater gift tocome. Now the waters ofbaptism wash away thesins of men, and by theanointing with olive oilThou doest make us radi-ant with Thy joy. At Thycommand, Aaron waswashed with water, andThy servant Moses, hisbrother, anointed himpriest. This too foreshad-owed greater things tocome. After Thy Son, JesusChrist our Lord, askedJohn for baptism in the wa-ters of Jordan, Thou sentthe Spirit upon him in theform of a dove and by thewitness of Thy own voiceThou declared him to beyour only, well-belovedSon. In this Thou clearlyfulfilled the prophecy ofDavid, that Christ would beanointed with the oil ofgladness beyond his fellowmen.

C. And so, Father, we askThee to bless (+) this oilThou hast created. Fill itwith the power of Thy HolySpirit through Christ ThySon. It is from Him thatchrism takes its name andwith chrism Thou hastanointed for Thyselfpriests and kings, prophetsand martyrs. Make thischrism a sign of life andsalvation for those who areto be born again in the wa-ters of baptism. Wash awaythe evil they have inher-ited from sinful Adam, andwhen they are anointedwith this holy oil makethem temples of Thy glory, radiant with the goodnessof life that has its source inThee.

C. Through this sign ofchrism grant them royal, priestly, and prophetichonor, and clothe themwith incorruption. Let thisbe indeed the chrism of sal-vation for those who will beborn again of water and theHoly Spirit. May they cometo share eternal life in the
