What is Research and Researching? Research is concerned with
Discovery
The process of discovery
Being inquisitive
Being creative

Terminology Explain, explanation, account
Argument, argumentation
Cause and effect, variables and relationships
Reason, evidence, fact, data
Test, verify

Your Idea and ResearchTransform your initial idea into a research topic in
terms:
(a) Research methodology
How to do research
(b) Theoretical thinking to do the research
The explanation

Literature Review Critically discuss existing research and findings on
your research topic as published in academic journals.
Critique and evaluate extant knowledge as published in peer reviewed research journals.
Identify areas of knowledge where improved understanding and explanation is required to develop theory – the research gap.
10/16/2013
Title What am I studying and what do I think will be the
expected outcome/contribution
Your thesis title should be succinct. It should contain subject keywords
Write the title to reflect your research aim - convey meaning concerning the research problem and potential original contribution
Titles, aims and objectives should be logically aligned.

Background and Context - WHY Relate your research topic with the relevant theory What is the theoretical problem? What still needs to be explained?
Argue with relevant reference citations Explain what other researcher have found in their research, and what
still needs to be researched and why. This will become your research question.
Make your argument through the published research. What new understanding and knowledge is needed and why. What is not well understood? What new knowledge is needed to make things clearer?
State the ‘research gap’ that you will address and generate a ‘research question’ from this research gap
State the expected contribution to knowledge that will result from your research
DO NOT USE TEXTBOOKS AS REFERENCES

Research Question
Why do I want to do the research? What am I seeking to explain?
Derive a research question from the literature and include it in the Aim section.
This question should reflect what you seek to explain by doing this research.
There should be ONE main research question. Two sub-questions are acceptable.
10/16/2013
Research Aim WHAT To define your research aim, ask the question: What do
I want to find out? There should be only ONE research aim.
The aim is To investigate/explain/understand....’
The aim is what you will research and it should reflect the Title of your thesis
10/16/2013
Research Objectives - HOW
What will I need to do to achieve the research aim?
To make research objectives ask the question: How will I meet my research aim?
Research objectives should begin with verb Conduct a literature review; Compile taxonomy,
Construct a model, Develop a framework... They should be outcomes
Four to five objectives
Objectives are HOW you will do the research and logically linked with the Research Aim and Title of your thesis
10/16/2013
Proposed Plan of Work (Research Methodology and Research Methods)WHERE, WHEN AND HOW How will I do the research? What research methods will I use to
collect data and analyse it? Where will I do the research?
Develop a research design to investigate the research problem and complete the research
Produce a Gantt chart of ALL research activities for 3 years of your study: Conduct literature review, determine research methodology,
identify data sources, identify journals in my subject area, learn to use electronic journals, collect data, analyse data, write the thesis, meetings with Supervisors
Research activities should have start data and end data , and the outcome resulting from the task.
Research activities lead to achieving research aim

Gantt Chart
You should read research textbooks and identify the research methods used in published journal articles to identify data collection and analysis methods.
What will you need to do in terms of (a) research methodology and (b) theoretical thinking to do the research? In terms of (a) and (b) how will you transform your initial idea into a researchable topic?
10/16/2013
Contribution What new understanding and knowledge will I obtain
from doing the research? What will I add to existing theory?
Discuss the expected findings in the context of the extant knowledge, theory, models and other explanations to evaluate your original contribution
What is the new understanding, knowledge and explanation that will result from your research? Discuss this with reference to existing theoretical explanations.

References List List references in Harvard style.
ALL references should from REFRREED JOURNALS. In-depth research is reported in the refereed journals.
Ensure references are accurate
Include all references you cited in the Background and Context section
