KAMPUS KEJURUTERAAN
UNIVERSITI SAINS MALAYSIA
INTRODUCTION
Urumee Melam is an Indian traditional music form that consists of Indian traditional music
instruments. Since this music form is the culture of Indians in Malaysia, it should be considered a
part of Malaysia’s diverse heritage and culture. This cultural form should be sustained in
Malaysia before it becomes unknown to the future generation. Therefore, the best way to
inculcate this cultural form is to build the foundations in a university campus and among students
of higher learning institutions. Thus, the main operation in this group will be to ensure that all
races can participate and learn about the rich tradition the Indians hold. This music form is not
only limited to Indians but open to all races as music is considered to be borderless and has the
capability to engage the soul and spirit of anyone who plays or listens to it. Moreover, this group
can develop its leadership and its member’s leadership skills at the same time fulfill the concept
of “One Malaysia”. As citizens of this proud country we are committed in fulfilling this concept
and it will be appropriate to do it in this group as it combines culture and unity at the same time.
