INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND
¨ On March 12, 2013, Trustees approved the 2013-2014, 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 calendars
¨ On April 29th, 2014, the 2015-2016 calendar was amended to align the School District’s Spring Break with other metro districts’ spring breaks
¨ At that meeting, staff indicated that Non-Instructional Days could change (Red Days)

BILL 36: SCHOOL AMENDMENT ACT
Section 87.02
£ A Board may, in accordance with the regulations of the Minister, amend a school calendar made available to the public by the Board under section 87.01(9) or (10) if, in the opinion of the Board an amendment is necessary
£ A school calendar amended under subsection (1) must comply with section 87.01(3) and the regulations of the Minister

If approved, the amended calendars would be made public by April 30, 2015 as per Bill 36 section 87.02(3)

£ The Board must, as soon as practicable and, in any event, within 30 days of amending a school calendar under subsection(1) make available to the public the amended school calendar

RECOMMENDING CHANGES TO DAYS NOT IN SESSION
In the 2015-2016 calendar presentation on April 29, 2014:
£ Day not in session October 2 (School Improvement Day)
£ Day not in session November 2 (Design and Assessment/Report Card Prep)
£ Day not in session February 26 (Design and Assessment/Report Card Prep)
The days above have been redistributed to provide common collaborative time to school communities

RECOMMENDING CHANGES TO DAYS NOT IN SESSION
¨ In all proposed calendars except LEC, one full day Design and Assessment Day and one half-day School Improvement Day have been redistributed to create common collaboration times that are 75 minutes in length and occur six times throughout the school year
¨ Shareholders were consulted regarding the impact of late start times, including DPAC. As a result, collaboration time has moved to the end of the school day

Douglas Park Community School
School community was consulted regarding an altered calendar
£ Reduced nine week summer vacation to seven weeks
£ Redistributed the two weeks into “intersessions”
£ Used the intersessions to provide recreational and learning opportunities for students
£ Collaboration days aligned with the rest of the District
£ School Improvement Day and Design and Assessment Day were used in the same way as previous calendars discussed

Langley Education Centre ¨ School timetable is a linear trimester model
¨ Traditional five day school week is redistributed to four days per week
¨ Collaboration time is embedded in the calendar but not at the same time as other schools in the District
¨ Traditional start and end times are shifted to a later start and end time to accommodate students that work during the day
