A Grand Tour: Artists and their Journeys

Art History and Appreciation: Art in Vienna 1900

Turner wandered the continent, Rubens travelled to Italy and Hogarth visited the Isle of Sheppey. Learn on this course how travel changed these great artists, what art they encountered and what art they created under the influence of all that they saw and experienced.

Following the success of the National Gallery’s exhibition of Viennese portraits we will examine the succession of scandalous revolts against Austrian convention. There was an explosion of creativity in Vienna in the years before the First World War. You will explore the painters Klimt, Kokoscha and Schiele, architects Otto Wagner, Joseph Hoffmann and the controversial Adolph Loos.

Art History and Appreciation: Modern Masters

An Introduction to Western Architecture

Images of London: Lost Buildings and Streets

Museums of London

During this six week course, explore the art of six modern masters who redefined the very idea of art. Looking at Matisse, Picasso, Duchamp, Dali, Pollock and Warhol you will learn about their influence in the art world as well as popular culture. Encompassing a wide range of art movements including Cubism, Dadaism and Abstract Expressionism, this course will leave you inspired with a renewed sense of wonder at what modern art can be.

An accessible course covering the history of western architecture from Ancient Greece to the present day. All the major styles and eras of architecture will be covered, including Classicism, Gothic, Renaissance, Romanticism, Modernism and Postmodernism. You will focus on how to recognise and describe the important features of buildings from each given era, and explore the ways in which architecture reflects social and cultural history. An ideal course for beginners.

London can be confusing: buildings keep disappearing, changing and being replaced. As London continues to grow and change, a photographic record of its lost buildings and streets becomes ever more important. Using photographs and reminiscence, this course will look at how some areas of the city have changed over recent decades and consider the impact on Londoners.

There are more museums and galleries in London than in any other city. This course explores the history of London’s great art collections, and the buildings housing them. You will begin in the 18th century with the first picture gallery at the Foundling Hospital, and the British Museum at Old Montagu House, and then trace the evolution of museums in London to the present day.

A People’s History of the East End: 17th & 18th Century

An Introductory Guide to Radicalism

Why did so many modern political ideas emerge from the French Revolution – conservatism, nationalism, state terror? This course investigates the events of the French Revolution and reflects on the political interpretations (left-wing and right-wing) that were produced by the Revolution.

Why did Ghandi visit Bow in the 1930s? Who was Peter the Painter? Where was ‘the Wilderness’ and what links it to the London Olympics? See the city differently by taking part in a course inspired by hidden treasures in our library and archive collections. No prior knowledge of London history is required.

This exciting course explores the rich and vibrant social history of London’s East End. From the early 17th century, the East End was transformed by shipping and overseas trade and the influx of thousands of Huguenot silk weavers. Using original sources from Bishopsgate Institute’s Library archives this course will explore how and why the East End was transformed from open fields and separate hamlets to a densely settled and industrious eastern wing of the metropolis.

This lunchtime course will provide an introduction to radical movements in London since the 1830s. London Squares: A Short History

Docks to Docklands: A Social History

Tribunes of the People: Eight Individuals who Changed the East End

From the Chartists of the 1830s to the anti-fascists of the 1930s, ordinary people have collectively challenged the power and authority of the rich and powerful. Through a combination of walks and classroom sessions this course tells the story of rebellious London.

This course will give you an awareness of the social and cultural history in relation to London’s squares and rounds (circuses and polygons). You will look at the oldest, the newest, the exclusive and the working class. On the way you’ll find out about who built the squares and who lived there and what happened in them from executions and protest to scientific meetings and parties. There will be opportunity to use original documents for investigation and discussion in this classroom-based course.

The port of London has always been key to the city’s growth. The docks of the 18th and 19th century provided a way of life for over 100,000 families. The area became a desolate wasteland in the 20th century before regeneration with the LDDC. Using maps, images, interviews and archive material and a visit to the Museum of London Docklands the rise and fall of this area will be explored and discussed in this course.

Between the 1880s and the 1930s, East Enders fought on many fronts for better lives.
