Our values: respect, integrity and positive attitude.

From the Principal

Dear Parents/Carers

We are very proud of our school. Swiss Cottage has been rated “outstanding” by Ofsted in all five of its inspections, one of only eleven schools in the country to achieve that consistency. It has more than doubled in size since 1995. We were a Beacon school, gained Specialist status in Cognition and Learning in 2006 and have received a number of awards over the years, including the Investors in People Gold award in 2009.

We provide an outstanding learning environment for children aged 2 – 19 with a wide range of needs, including those with profound and multiple learning difficulties, moderate and severe learning difficulties, communication difficulties, and those on the Autistic Spectrum Continuum. Our learners are from a number of ethnic groups and there are over 60% of our students who speak English as an additional language. Over 60% of our families are eligible for Free School Meals.

We are also a Teaching School. We work with many other schools and organisations across the UK and internationally to improve the quality of teaching and learning in mainstream and special education. We have established a reputation for outstanding programmes and partnerships.

We are a school that is always responsive to changing needs. As such we are looking to develop provision for all learners post-Swiss Cottage and into adult hood. We are also looking to further develop our out of hours learning including our short breaks facility.

I hope you will find everything you need to know about our school in this Prospectus, but the best way to understand our school is to visit us. I hope you will take the opportunity to do this.

Best wishes,

Kay Bedford, OBE, MA, BEd HonsPrincipal, Swiss Cottage School, Development and Research CentreNational Leader of Education (NLE)[email protected]

Classroom EnvironmentAll our classrooms are large, open plan spaces which help support our learners’ development. Most classrooms have access to an outdoor space and a one-to-one room. Some of our classrooms have furniture that is adjustable in height enabling wheelchair users to fully participate in all activities.

Unlike mainstream schools, the number of learners per class is low with a high adult-learner ratio. Each class has one teacher and 2-4 teaching assistants depending on the age, ability and special needs of the class. Learners are grouped according to their age, developmental stage, number of boys to girls, compatibility and SEN. We organise class groups to get the best outcome for all members of the class.

Development & Research Centre (DRC)The Development & Research Centre (DRC) is a superb facility to support all the development of our staff and to host visits from people from beyond the school.

The DRC is also the home of our Teaching School, which leads an alliance of outstanding schools, charities, health, universities and higher education institutions to offer training for teachers at all stages of their careers from trainee to executive head.

As a Teaching School, we are committed to driving research in special educational needs and to steering scientific developments and educational innovation. We strive to be a hub for establishing outstanding approaches for special needs in a wide context.

Autism Support Team (AST)

The Autism Support Team is committed to facilitating learners on the autistic spectrum across the school to maximise their learning potential. We aim to ensure that these pupils develop and utilise their skills to the full by working in positive partnership with parents, class teams, and multi-agency support team professionals.

These learners will be supported to develop transferrable skills in the areas of communication, interaction, social understanding and self-development. We strive to increase the motivation of our learners to achieve their potential, become more independent, flexible and competent in self-managing their behaviour.

The team seeks to ensure that learners are provided with a consistent approach which respects their interests and learning styles. We support the use of accessible and consistent communication systems across the school. We work with class teams in the development, consistent implementation and maintenance of strategies. We also works with families.

Family and Inclusion Team (FIT)

The Family and Inclusion Team (FIT) support learners and families across the school, working with class based staff and other professionals in school to ensure that children and young people are safe, happy and able to make progress and do well.

The team works with learners directly in the classroom or in our specialist bases across the building supporting them to become “classroom ready”.

The team is able to visit families at home supported by other MAST professionals to help set up new routines, observe children and to model behavior strategies.

Safeguarding and pupil safety is paramount at Swiss Cottage and the FIT teams work closely with class-teams to develop Risk Assessments, Care Plans and Personal Handling, Intimate Care Plans and Behaviour Plans, and are happy to share these with families upon request.

FIT works in conjunction with Camden’s Disabled Children’s team and always tries to ensure families are supported to avoid crisis interventions.

We run regular coffee mornings and events with our Family Link Workers who work closely with our Somali, Congolese & Bengali families to support the range of services and individual support. We also work in conjunction with KIDS and Elfrida Rathbone, two leading charities allowing parents and carers to access advice and support but also to meet and make friends with other families in the school.

Our Learners

Range of NeedsWe cater for children aged 2-19 with complex learning difficulties (PMLD and SLD), communication difficulties and those on the Autistic Spectrum Continuum (ASC). We are investigating the development of an appropriate provision for pupils with moderate learning difficulties.

Safe-guarding We take our responsibilities for Safeguarding children and young people very seriously and follow the agreed London Child Protection procedures rigorously. All staff are trained annually; all staff have clearance to work with children. We have clear procedures in place to report any concerns. We also teach our learners to keep themselves safe, both within the school grounds and in the wider world. We work closely with parents and multi-agency support team (MAST) to ensure that there is clarity and understanding of our procedures in relation to child protection. The ever changing world of technology creates opportunities, along with challenges for our young people and we ensure that our pupils are confident in safely using technology. Ofsted inspections have always graded our procedures outstanding and robust.

Our safeguarding policy can be downloaded from our website www.swisscottage.camden.sch.uk, and our staff will be willing to discuss this in more detail should you have any questions.

Page 9: Prospectus - Swiss Cottage Schoolswisscottage.camden.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/prospectus-print.pdfI hope you will find everything you need to know about our school in this

Positive Behaviour PolicyOur Positive Behaviour Policy is fundamental to our success and is based on our core values of integrity, respect and positive attitude. We aim to support children to self-manage their behaviour and to take responsibility for their actions and to develop their emotional intelligence.

At Swiss Cottage we believe that:

• Pupils want to behave well. We believe that our pupils are happy when they behave well and when that behaviour is recognised by adults and their peers.

• Pupils can learn to improve their behaviour. Our pupils find learning difficult. Learning new behaviour is a task, just like learning to communicate.

• Mistakes are part of the learning process. We understand poor behaviour as a mistake which can be rectified. We don’t make a judgement about it – instead we support our pupils to get it right. Practice improves performance.

• All adults can learn strategies to support pupils to improve their behaviour.

Rights Respecting SchoolWe are a Rights Respecting School. Learners and adults work together to recognise and act upon the rights of the child with respect to the school, community and the wider world. We believe that by understanding their own rights, children learn to appreciate and uphold the rights of others.

Healthy School

We are a Healthy School and promote physical and emotional health by providing accessible and relevant information and equipping learners and staff with the understanding, skills and attitudes to make informed decisions about their health

Learners flourish in a positive environment and are given a voice to influence whole school decisions. As a Healthy School, we understand the importance of investing in health and to help pupils do their best, raise levels of achievement, improve standards and develop policies and practice to promote health. We strive to work in partnership with our parents to embed the importance of developing healthy lifestyles.

Every moment is a learning opportunity at Swiss Cottage School. We provide lessons which are meaningful, accessible, motivating, contextualised and appropriately challenging to maximise progress for each child.

The teaching team has a thorough understanding of each child’s point of learning; their interests, strengths and barriers, developmental stage and learning level.

Learners are supported to develop attention, self-motivation, a “have a go” attitude and to take risks in their learning. They are enabled to use their skills in a range of contexts, to become increasingly independent, resourceful and resilient when faced with challenges.

Learning is promoted through well organised classrooms and routines, appropriately paced and motivating activities with assessment for learning firmly embedded across all contexts.

Teaching and Learning

CurriculumOur curriculum at Swiss Cottage is skill and context based and encourages active engagement in learning. The curriculum focuses on developing the key skills of communication, cognition, independence, physical development and self-care, all transferrable skills that equip children and young people for life beyond the school.

Our curriculum strives to be responsive to each learner, and build on individual strengths and interests. A rolling plan is in place, which supports a balance of stimulating contexts for learning through different learning experiences, themes and subjects.

We have three core curricula which meet the range of learning needs of all our children and young people.

Students with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) are provided with an informal curriculum which is specifically designed to meet their needs in connecting and responding.

Pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) benefit from a semi-formal curriculum which promotes life-skills and is highly stimulating.

Learners with Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD) receive an adaptation of the National Curriculum which emphasises life skills.

In addition, children in the Early Years Foundation Stage follow the statutory EYFS curriculum.

We are committed to offering our children and young people the best learning opportunities. We therefore offer a personalised curriculum for all children to ensure we meet all needs.

Page 12: Prospectus - Swiss Cottage Schoolswisscottage.camden.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/prospectus-print.pdfI hope you will find everything you need to know about our school in this

Communication, Reading and WritingAt Swiss Cottage School we ensure that the emphasis on Communication and Literacy across the Curriculum is informed and effective. We use a range of augmentative or alternative strategies to promote the ability of many learners to communicate successfully, enabling them to respond and interact to their full capacity.

Where appropriate we provide regular Phonics and Guided Reading Lessons for groups of learners along with developing their Spelling and Writing Skills.

We constantly value our learners’ efforts, promoting self-esteem and confidence

through specific praise.

NumeracyAt Swiss Cottage we aim to teach the basic mathematical skills and concepts to help our learners function more independently in everyday situations. An understanding of number is essential in order for our young people to achieve competencies in using money, time, length, weight, capacity and handling data in real-life contexts.

A cross - curricular approach is used throughout the school to support the consolidation and extension of skills and concepts and provide relevance.

An integrated approach to teaching the different strands of maths is used in order for connections to be made explicit so that our learners begin to make sense of numbers, patterns and shapes they see in the world around them.

More able learners are given opportunities to generalise and transfer their skills, to solve problems, to develop their mathematical thinking and communicate their ideas.

Younger or less able are given opportunities to encounter, explore and respond to changes in patterns, quantities, size and shape of objects in their immediate environment.

Page 13: Prospectus - Swiss Cottage Schoolswisscottage.camden.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/prospectus-print.pdfI hope you will find everything you need to know about our school in this

ScienceScience provides a rich and current context for cross curricular communication, numeracy, personal learning and thinking skills throughout and beyond the school. In Upper school, this includes access to a range of accreditations and work experience opportunities including Entry Level Science, BTec Applied Science and Post 16 Unit Awards,

Partnership work with organisations like London Zoo, UCL and trAID are key to enriching learners perception of and access to science and technology; most recently we received Royal Society funding for an exciting project with a `real world expert` at London Zoo aiming to enrich and sustain our on-site biodiversity.

At Swiss Cottage, everyone is encouraged to experience the awe and wonder of everyday and unfamiliar scientific phenomena-in a way that is particularly appropriate for them and informed by sound knowledge of both learners and subject matter.

International EducationThe international dimension of the curriculum gives all learners on-going opportunities to connect with other young people from across the globe, and encounter different cultures.

Swiss Cottage holds International School status from the British Council and has just won International TES Special School of the Year award for our international work. In recognition of the embedded global approach, within our curriculum. We are developing a related ambassadorial role, through which we have been supporting other UK schools to develop their own international links, using tools such as e-twinning. We have links with schools in several countries, including Bangladesh and Ghana. We are part of the European Union Comenius Programme, which funds our partnership with Linkoping District in Sweden and these links are consistently expanded to other parts of Sweden.

We hold a Rights Respecting School Award from UNICEF. This is something which acknowledges our promotion of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and our commitment to education for all.

Page 14: Prospectus - Swiss Cottage Schoolswisscottage.camden.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/prospectus-print.pdfI hope you will find everything you need to know about our school in this

Life SkillsOur Life Skills classes help provide our learners with the valuable knowledge and skills that are essential for independent living.

For our MLD and SLD learners we practice home management, personal care, shopping, safety, travel and leisure with the addition of careers for our MLD classes. For our PMLD students the main focus of sessions is on personal care.

We are currently in the process of creating a Life Skills curriculum that teachers will be able to use within their own Life Skills lessons. We are also setting up a central hub of resources for teachers to rent out to help create as much

independence in our students as possible.

MusicLearners are encouraged to experiment, be creative and ‘have a go’ in a supportive environment where there is no such thing as a single right answer. This approach to learning boosts learners’ confidence.

Learners have many opportunities to build emotional awareness and develop their self-expression through improvisation activities. They play and explore a wide range of musical instruments and up-to-date technologies in lessons and performances. Performances are wide-ranging from the more traditional choir to accessible singing that uses assistive technology to great effect.

A number of our learners also receive bespoke individual instrumental lessons from experienced musicians.

The Music team work with a range of outside agencies and partnerships to support learners in connecting with the local community, the city of London and global cultures in a meaningful way. These partnerships and activities are tailored to meet every learner’s need, with many of them being developed over many years. In working with Drake Music, we have a developed the use of assistive technologies to enable PMLD learners to express themselves through music and sound, whereas with Camden Music Service, learners are provided with the opportunity to share and celebrate their musical skills in exciting community events.

Page 15: Prospectus - Swiss Cottage Schoolswisscottage.camden.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/prospectus-print.pdfI hope you will find everything you need to know about our school in this

HorticultureHorticulture is delivered across the Lower and Upper Schools providing valuable opportunities for pupils of all abilities to engage in multi-sensory activities, supported by lesson planning and informed by Science, Mathematics, Literacy and Creative Curriculum objectives.

Activities are designed to inspire learners to appreciate: their outdoor natural environment; biodiversity and to develop an ecological awareness of the world. Opportunities are given to dig; sew seeds; care for plants; understand how vegetables are grown and make healthy food choices. Lessons are fine-tuned to ensure that learning is pitched appropriately, so each pupil is challenged and achieves well.

We aim to ‘grow’ those with an aptitude for gardening. Just as the seasons change, planning for Horticulture constantly reflects learner’s needs, supports skills and provides new experiences as they arise. Currently, selected pupils in Upper School complete relevant aspects of national accreditations such as the OCR Life and Living Skills Certificate (Key Stage 4) and Ascentis: Introduction to Horticulture, Entry Level 2 (Key Stage 5) Whilst Post 16 Provision can support pupils wishing to develop careers or gain work experience in Horticulture.

ArtArt at Swiss Cottage is highly creative and inclusive allowing learners to explore the world of design, art history and modern culture. Learners develop skills including storytelling, basic drawing, painting, printing, photography, Photoshop and 3D sculpture.

Most learners go onto receiving their Arts Award, Entry Level certificate, or other awards such as AQA and OCR certificates at different levels as to remain inclusive towards all students.

We hold several art exhibitions a year displaying work both in school and at Swiss Cottage Library. Swiss Cottage have a strong partnership with Camden Arts Centre, and work closely with galleries around London, such as the National Portrait Gallery and the Tate Modern, allowing learners to develop their Art education to a high standard.

Page 16: Prospectus - Swiss Cottage Schoolswisscottage.camden.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/prospectus-print.pdfI hope you will find everything you need to know about our school in this

PE and Sports We have an excellent working partnership with The Greenhouse charity to help provide an inclusive PE and sporting curriculum for all our learners.

All classes at Swiss Cottage have access to a minimum of two hours per week of P.E that where appropriate follows an adapted national curriculum. Our more complex learners follow specialist programmes like ‘Elements’ which use a combination of rebound and hydrotherapy.

We compete in a number of national sporting events including the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games and the London Panathalon Games. We also run a number of sporting teams including football, bocca, netball.

Out of School Hours Learning (OSHL)Swiss Cottage gained funding to start a specialist play service in June/July 2012 after writing a successful bid to the local authority. The funding comes through “Short Breaks” and the school secured around £600,000 to provide a specialist play service for children with complex needs between the ages of 4-12 who attend Swiss Cottage and or live in the London Borough of Camden

Our extended play service provides a wide range of play and sport based activities for referred children outside school hours. Some of the activities include:

• Arts & crafts;

• Outside play;

• Swimming;

• Music;

• Trampolining;

These run for specific groups of children after school, on Saturdays and during the school holidays. All places for children are allocated through the Disabled children’s team in Camden with referrals being sent to the school by social workers based with the team.

• Drama;

• Dance;

• Sailing;

• Sports, and

• Trips and visits

School Journeys We currently run journeys to Sayers Croft Centre in Surrey, Stubbers Centre in Upminster, Salcombe Water Sports Centre in Devon and Tall Ship sailing. We also go further afield to Lille, France and to Linkoping in Sweden. We are looking to expand the range of trips to meet the wider range of need in the school and to include trips with a creative arts focus.

These start in the final year of Primary, and provide a supported opportunity for learners to spend a short time away from home. This is very important for their development and, if learners are offered a place, they are expected to attend. Parents/carers need to contribute to School Journey costs, and can pay over time if necessary. The experiences of our young people on these residential trips develop confidence and form long lasting memories for them.

Page 18: Prospectus - Swiss Cottage Schoolswisscottage.camden.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/prospectus-print.pdfI hope you will find everything you need to know about our school in this

The School DayThe school is open to children from 9.30 – 3.30. Buses arrive between 9.15 and 9.30 and 3.30 and 3.45.

School UniformThe school uniform consists of a dark trousers or skirt with branded polo shirts or zipped hoodies in funky Swiss Cottage colours.

Use of mobile phones and elecronic equipmentLearners in Upper School may bring mobile phones to school if parents are happy for them to do so. If they bring them into school they will be used as a teaching aid to teach children how to use them safely and responsibly. When not used for teaching purposes they must be handed into a member of staff.

Personal BelongingsWe discourage children from bringing personal belongings to school and encourage our young people to hand such items into the school office for safe keeping until the end of the day. If personal belongings are brought into school, please ensure they are labelled clearly with the pupil’s name.

Life at Swiss Cottage

Transport ArrangementsMost children at Swiss Cottage come from the London Borough of Camden. They have a Transport Policy and guidelines which indicate which children will be transported to and from the school and which children will have to make their own way.

Camden Transport are responsible for ensuring that our young people with the most complex need are safely transported to and from school. We work closely with the escorts to ensure that they are aware of our learners’ needs. Any transport issues need to be directed to the Camden Transport Team as we do not employ these staff. We endeavour to support our young people to become independent travellers at the appropriate time. We work in partnership with our parents and Camden transport to make this a safe and empowering lifeskill.

Complaints PolicyWe actively encourage all parents to work with the school and address any concerns as they arise. In the very few cases where we are not able to resolve concerns at source, the school has a formal complaints procedure which can be found on our website: www.swisscottge.camden.sch.uk

Money There is no need for children to bring cash into school.

Life at Swiss Cottage

Into Swiss Cottage School

When a place at Swiss Cottage School is agreed, we write to parents to arrange the following:

• Our staff visit the school the child attends to meet the child in that context and the staff there;

• Staff arrange a home visit to see the child at home and to exchange information with parents and other significant people; and

• We arrange an admissions interview to complete paperwork, share information and meet staff from the class team and therapists.

Within Swiss Cottage School

We mark the transition from one school to the next within Swiss Cottage in an appropriate way for each child. Not all students will transfer to our 6th form. We work with other organisations to ensure our students move onto appropriate provision.

From Swiss Cottage School

Our Connexions Lead Personal Adviser supports learners aged 13-25 and their families to make successful transitions after Swiss Cottage. She works with teachers to support learners to understand the world of work and life beyond Swiss Cottage as well as offering advice on jobs, careers and making realistic choices.

Return to Mainstream Schools

Best placement is considered at each Education Healthcare Plan (EHCP) review. If a child has progressed to a level where mainstream would be an appropriate placement, we will support gradual re-integration, in partnership with the child and his/her family. This happens infrequently as most of our young people now have more complex needs.

Making TransitionsTransitions

Page 21: Prospectus - Swiss Cottage Schoolswisscottage.camden.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/prospectus-print.pdfI hope you will find everything you need to know about our school in this

Making TransitionsTransitions

Our 6th Form

This is currently for students aged 16-19, with the most challenging needs eg PMLD and/or Autism. Students with less challenging needs at age 16 will be supported into more “mainstream“ type provision, as this will better meet their needs. Connexions start work with pupils in Year 9, building a relationship and contributing to the learner’s Annual Review. Parents are advised of this process and on-going support is available so that a plan can be put in place to support the transition. Year 11 is another important year where the Connexions Adviser works with learners and families in ensuring that next steps are explored.

Our Connexions Lead Personal Adviser also “tracks” pupils once they have left school up until the age of 25 to support them with appropriate information, advice and guidance and applications for their next placement or getting into employment.

We are working with Camden to improve provision for all our students beyond Swiss Cottage School.

Other Provisions for Students Aged 16-25

New provision is to be opened in 2015 for students and young adults with complex needs- PMLD and Autism, on a nearby site. This will provide some supported living; supported Further Education and supported work placements. This will take some of our students and release places for others in our 6th Form. We will be working closely with this new provision, to ensure it meets the needs of our students.

Page 22: Prospectus - Swiss Cottage Schoolswisscottage.camden.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/prospectus-print.pdfI hope you will find everything you need to know about our school in this

Family SupportWe offer a number of family support sessions a week, where parents can gain support or advice with issues including benefits, transport and housing concerns. There are family support workers who can speak the following languages; Somali Bengali and Congolese.

Being a parent is one of the most important jobs in the world, but it can also be one of the toughest as family life can often be challenging and demanding. Our family support team runs a variety of workshops to help parents feel more confident in their role as a parent or carer. These workshops are an excellent way to meet some other parents within the school as well as developing new skills.

Parent PartnershipWe want a genuine partnership with our Parents/Carers and we encourage them to attend all meetings and events and to get involved with life at the school. As many parents do not live locally and many children come to us on School Transport, some of the ways we do this are through:

• email; • Sharepoint;• text messages; • Parent calendar;• Workshops and performances;• Opportunities to observe their child in the classroom;• Meetings (annual reviews, 1:1 and home visits)• Resource making workshops – school and home.

• Breakfast mornings;• Training events;• Parent Council;• Home – school diary;• Newsletters;• Website;• facebook and twitter;• Skype;

FundraisingFundraising is important to our school and we have successfully raised tens of thousands of pounds to purchase specialist equipment, learning resources, and to fund our out of hours and respite care programmes. We have also raised money for our teacher training and research projects. Without actively fundraising and the kind support of our Friends the school would not be able to afford these much needed services and equipment.

Swiss Cottage School Charity, the charitable arm to Swiss Cottage School regularly organises fundraising events such as school fetes, A Perfect Day Street Festival, bake sales and clothes sales but much of our charity funds come from the generosity of individuals and trust funds.

We also have the hugely successful Pigs4Kids fundraising campaign that raises money for children with special needs and to raise awareness of special needs education. We have been lucky to receive support from the local community, neighbouring schools and even some famous faces including Kevin Spacy, Niamh Cusack and Michael Gove. Please visit the www.pigs4kids.org for more information or email: [email protected]
