Year 8 Future Me

Year 8 should be congratulated for their participation in the UOW Year 8 #Future Me program on 19 February. Year 8 worked with UOW student mentors to explore a range of things related to career paths. They considered their own skills and interests, to identify a preferred "career type" - Creator, Organiser, Thinker, Doer, Persuader or Helper.

Students also worked in groups to explore Design Thinking. They used the process of Empathise, Define, Ideate to consider something at school they would like to change, and to come up with a creative solution. We look forward to reading some of Year 8's great ideas. Well done for getting involved and treating our UOW guests with respect.

Year 11 HSC Boot Camp

On Monday 25 February Year 11 will experience a HSC Boot camp at Kanahooka High.

HSC Boot camp is a program offered to students beginning Year 11 at UOW’s In2Uni schools. The program is designed to give students a heads up for the HSC and help to prepare them for their senior studies. The program is delivered by current university students who have recently completed and been successful in their HSC, and who have previously attended a local high school. The program focuses on tips for approaching the HSC, soft study skills and what to expect over the next 18 months.

Dance Festival 2019 Another year, another Festival! All of our students (ranging from Years 7 to 12) who are participating this year are looking forward to being a part of a huge event, celebrating dance across our region and representing our school in 2019. Rehearsals for both Companies will take place every Thursday during sport, in Room 605. As it happens, we have had so much interest, both groups are completely full and we are now taking reserve spots. The performance will be at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre (IPAC) in Week 5, Term 2, from Wednesday 29 May to Saturday 1 June. Here are some happy snaps from last year’s festival…

Elective Dance 2019 This term all Year 9-11 Dance students have been working on learning their contemporary based solo

performance for Assessment in Week 8.

Year 8 Interest Elective Dance classes have been studying an upbeat style of Dance, Musical Theatre.

They are looking forward to possibly going to see a professional Musical next term.

Year 9 have been learning about safe dance practice, human anatomy and watching/discussing and

critiquing professional Dance works.

Year 10, in theory lessons, have been learning about a professional work ‘Cry’ by Alvin Ailey and learning

about African American Slavery and the Civil Rights Movement. They will then create their own

compositions based around these themes and ideas. It’s been wonderful to watch some of our students

flourish in this area and enjoy investigating their creativity side.

Years 11 and 12 have been learning their Core Performance solo Dance and preparing for the 6 minute

interview following their assessment on their knowledge about Performance and Composition. In

Appreciation, they have been studying the Choreographer, Jiri Kylian, and his Black and White Ballets.

Looking forward to another exciting year in Dance!!! Jannali E, Year 12, rehearsing for her HSC Core Performance Dance

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

2019 Assessment

On Friday 22 February all students from Years 7 to 11 will engage in Year Meetings to receive their 2019 Assessment booklets. The assessment booklets contain important information to assist your child to achieve their personal best in assessment tasks for 2019. A key aspect of the 2019 Assessment booklets is the assessment calendar that can be found inside the front cover. This calendar shows every assessment task that will occur across the year. The calendar has been designed to prevent an overload of tasks being due on any given week. This is also important information to assist students and their parents/carers to prepare for due dates. Please take the time to review the Assessment Booklet and Assessment Calendar within. The booklets look like this:

The assessment calendar looks like this:

Subject Selection This is the final week for students to change subjects in 2019. It is very important to establish settled classes so that the continuity of learning is not disrupted for students. If your child has not already done so, please remind them to see the Head Teacher of a subject that they wish to change from in order to obtain a 2019 Change of Subject Form. Best wishes for the rest of Term 1. Mr S Bird Deputy Principal Teaching and Learning

INTEREST ELECTIVES

On Friday 15 February, Year 8 Perfect Petz and Drama Interest Elective classes went on an excursion to Hoyts Warrawong to watch the movie “How to Train Your Dragon - The Hidden World”.

The bus trip was a new experience for some who had never used an OPAL card before and the luxury of the new Hoyts seating was enjoyed by all (again for the first time for some students). The overall comment from students was that; “I had a great time”.

The general public commented on the students’ good behaviour whilst on the bus trips and in the movie. Thank you to Mr Philpot who was also involved in this excursion. I would like to congratulate all the students who went on the excursion for the way they represented Kanahooka High School and look forward to our future outings.

MATHEMATICS

World of Mathematicians!

Welcome to 2019 marvellous Mathematicians! It’s already Week 4! Kanahooka students and staff are busy with their learning and teaching. Comments from the Mathematics staff has been how pleased that the majority of their students are settled and engaged in their activities. A reminder that all students need to have a book, pens, ruler and especially their own calculator! All students will have received a copy of their Mathematics Assessment and Reporting Outcomes for this semester. Please ask to see it. It should be pasted in their books. In the next few weeks, Year 7 through to Year 11 will be receiving their first formal assessment, which will be a prepared task. This means they will have opportunities to seek help in class, at the After School Tutorial Centre and at home. If, at any time, your child is struggling with this task, please contact the Mathematics Faculty and speak to your child’s teacher. I look forward to another exciting year, working with happy and productive Mathematicians. Remember – have a go, believe in yourself and succeed!
