It’s a hard job but someone has to do it. Four combined rehearsals and two matinee and evening

performances. A gruelling schedule, long days and the added discipline of being on show for the entire

three hour performance. The choir participants had the thrill of being a moving choir this year and

thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Congratulations to Ryan H, Maddison M, Bayden M, Shania S,

Mason S, Taliaha T, Courtney M and Alanna B for their commitment to the production. A special thank

you to all the parents/carers for their efforts assisting with transport during show week.

My Southern Stars 2018 Diary August 1 - I attended my first Southern Stars - Arena Spectacular prodigious choir rehearsal. The entire choir initially met at Dapto High School to learn our songs for the Southern Stars performance 2018. It was a mesmerising day as we met many new individual singers and choir conductors, including Racheal and Sonia, who taught us many new songs to perform. We started our day by learning the National Anthem and The Greatest Show; it was a tremendous experience to be a part of something new and amazing. August 29 - We had a full choir rehearsal at Smiths Hill High School, where we finished learning the rest of our songs, as well as learning actions for our songs to it make more astonishing. We also met Jay Laga’aia, who stars in the popular children's show Play School. Jay was also one of the stars of Star Wars Episodes 2 and 3. He spoke to many singers about their experiences at Southern Stars. August 30

– We had our first rehearsal at WEC (Win Entertainment Centre) where we got our assigned seats for the show.

We had an amazing day as the entire choir got the chance to go down onto the stage and practise. We also got many props like glowing headbands, glow sticks that changed colours, wristbands that had 16 contrasting colours, as well as a torch. We used many of these props whilst performing our songs, which assisted in bringing the show more to life. August 31 to September 1 - Show Time! Our first official show for 2018 took off in a blast. Many schools from across the Illawarra had a chance to come and witness some new talent being born. We waited anxiously in the tunnels for about 15 minutes for our entrance, watching the circus actors running in and out and hearing people cheering. Assistant Stage Managers were holding up many QUIET signs, as there were many excited loud children waiting to make their entrance. The performers started to move and in we went, onto the stage. We waited for the Acknowledgement of Country and then the lights went low and the show started with us. All eyes were staring and waiting as we started to sing; it became more enjoyable. We finished the Anthem and started The Greatest Show. As the solo vocalists came onto the stage, we ran back to our seats, doing our dance moves and singing. At the end of the night we finished with a reprise of The Greatest Show. All 3000 dancers and actors on stage, including solo vocalists and vocal ensemble groups; it was truly a tremendous experience. As the final words were sang, confetti flew from the sky and the crowds cheered. This was a truly breath-taking show. Bring on Southern Stars 2019. I do not know how they will top this one, as it was truly “THE GREATEST SHOW”. Maddison M - Year 10

Our Stage 5 students continue to impress the firefighters at Albion Park Fire & Rescue for their Workers of Wollongong work experience. They've been helping wash the truck, clean the station and change the signs, as well as learning how the firefighters use the "jaws of life" to rescue trapped people.

The students will be visiting the Wollongong Station for their final two weeks. A huge thank you to all the staff at Albion Park Fire & Rescue for having us over the last 5 weeks

The MC class successfully worked through a C.S.I murder mystery task based around the game

‘Fortnite’. They had to use their mathematical knowledge to identify each clue and uncover the truth. It

has been an incredible learning experience for everyone.

SASS appreciation in Support As a part of SASS Appreciation Week, Mr Dean’s class

invited all of the SASS Staff from the Support Unit to a

luncheon prepared by the students to say thank you for

all of the hard work they do with the students at Kanahooka

High School.

The staff were treated to chicken schnitzel and soft pretzels,

which are dishes the students picked from their ‘Cultures

within Australia Cookbook’ as a part of their studies.

The staff were also given their very own ‘Grass Head’ made

by the students during their studies of ‘Living Things’ in

Science.

Sport

On Thursday 6 September Kanahooka High School celebrated National Health and Physical Education Day. The PE staff organise a number of different sports at recess for the whole school to get involved in and to help promote health, physical activity and healthy lifestyles. These sports include, soccer, touch football, volleyball, basketball and handball. It was brilliant to see the vast majority of students participating in these sports, continuing the Kanahooka High School tradition of getting involved in sporting activities.

Student Sport Selection Term 4

As Term 4 is fast approaching we have held our sports selection day this week with students registering their preference for sport next term. Below is the information parents need to be aware of regarding sport venues and costs. Permission notes and risk assessments will be distributed to students over the coming fortnight, and are requested to be returned before the end of this term. Any enquires regarding sport can be made to Mrs Fenton or Mr Nunn in the PE staffroom.

Kanahooka High School Boys Basketball Team 2018

A great season has come to an end with this year’s basketball team undergoing what was a rebuilding

year. Fuelled from Year 7 all the way up to Year 11, this team played with heart all season long.

Toby, the Terror down low, managed to carve out some valuable real estate in most games with

lots of intensity and physicality for our wee Year 7 trooper. Splashing down threes and euro step drives,

needs to be less of a focus next season but with the likes of, On Fire Jye, running hot and cold, Splash

Down Simon, Leaping Liam, Jumpin’ Jackson and Cruz Control Cylus who knows what will be in

store for next year.

This season’s effort were also greatly aided by the injury prone, but never say quit, Clutch Powers Brock,

along with Just in Case Justin, I think I’ll leave half way through the season, and Freight Train Kurt

smashing his way through opponents from coast to coast. Thank you all for a memorable and most

enjoyable season. Enjoy the game. Mr Ursino

R U OK Day

R U OK? Day is a national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that any day is the day to ask,

“Are you OK?” and support those struggling with life. Kanahooka High held a special assembly on

Thursday and also ran activities throughout the day.

Toby, Cylus, Kurt, Mr Ursino Jye, Brock, Simon, Jackson, Liam, absent: Corbyn Next season all eyes will be on

3traight 3hooting Liam!

HSIE

Our primary schools sent some of their brightest and bubbliest students to Kanahooka High School for the HSIE Taster session. The students started with an exercise that saw the students racing round the school to find the mystery letters, which was an awesome sight. Afterwards they went back to the rooms to use an online program that saw the students try to simulate a bushfire prevention in a small town. It led to great discussions based on how best to prepare and prevent bushfires. The students also went with Mrs Lucas to use our digging pit and understand how archaeologists work. The HSIE staff had a great time with the students and wow, did those kids eat their way through the fruit!

KHS Students Artworks part of Dapto Square Activation

Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery attended our assembly this week to present a Certificate of Appreciation to Kanahooka High School students for their participation in the Artworks Group for the Dapto Square Activation. Several of our talented students contributed photographic artworks to the project, which can be seen in the renovated Dapto Square.

These works of art include the images displayed on the side of the ANZ Bank. Take the time to have a look next time you are down in the Dapto Square, it is well worth the effort.

Welfare

Our Knights of the Round Table

SRC leaders from Kanahooka High School joined with over 65 students from across the region to attend

the Eighth Annual Whitlam Youth Leaders Roundtable.

The round table gives students a chance to speak with their Member of Parliament and raise issues that

are important to them and they believe Parliament needs to act upon.

The day was a great success, with all students actively engaging and raising issues and ideas for action.

Interest Elective

Another Day Out at the Vet by Year 7 Perfect Petz!

Last Friday, Mrs Lowis and her Year 7 Perfect Petz interest elective class went to Dapto Companion

Veterinary Hospital near Dapto Mall. Bec and Lauren, Veterinarian Nurses, showed the class the

“behind scenes” of the Veterinary Hospital.

Students were able to see how teeth are cleaned on a dog: (it’s just like when we go to get our teeth

done at the Dentist, the only difference being the animal is under anaesthetic). Also the operating

theatre (no operations were happening whilst we were there) and the areas where dogs and cats are

hospitalised. A fascinating x-ray of a dog with stones was exhibited, as well as a visit to the cattery

boarding facility.

Afterwards, students visited the local pet store and then headed to McDonalds for their refreshment stop. We were very lucky with the weather, escaping the rain whilst in McDonalds, and returned back to school before the heavy downpour at lunchtime!

Legacy Week Warilla Grove 2018 On Tuesday 4 September four of our Student Leaders spent the day at Warilla Grove Shopping Centre assisting ex staff member, Mr Bruce Taylor, sell merchandise to raise awareness and money for Legacy Week. These students had a wonderful day learning about the importance of Legacy and what the organisation does to assist families and relatives of fallen service men and women. Well done to Naomi G, Holly W, Jolene R and Alexander F for representing KHS at this annual event. Mrs C Lucas

Mathmagician Taster Afternoons

The Kanahooka High School Mathematics Department hosted local school’s Year 5 and 6 students to

experience working like a mathematician. While in the maths rooms, our Mathmagicians were solving a

series of collaborative problems and then accessing a fun and entertaining Maths site called Prodigy.

Assisted by a great group of enthusiastic volunteers, our future students enjoyed meeting new people,

working mathematically and being at Kanahooka High School.

Mathematics

Year 8 and 9 students, accompanied by Mrs Heffernan and Mr Ursino, took their maths skill to the University of Wollongong recently to work collaboratively in different learning environments.

With the support of Associate Professor David Pask, Dr Tricia Forrester and their 270 Maths students (including a rather famous graduate from Kanahooka High School!), our students worked on Maths for hours and hours. The day centred around working on both whiteboards in groups of 3 and at tables in groups as well.

Students completed pre and post testing on the topics of Fractions, Algebra, Geometry, Decimals and Time. The university students will then be able to look at the results of some of their first teaching experiences. A great day was had by all and a return trip is scheduled for October 16 for Year 9. Our students really loved being on the University Campus.
