Qatar Youth Hostels (QYH) has recently set a new record when the number of its reg-

istered members surpassed the 3,000 figure representing both gen-ders and all ages.

Highlighting this, Ahmed Al Ajami, QYH Director told The Penin-sula that, QYH membership will help people to be a part of the world wide network of Youth Hostels and thus in turn to be a link in the ‘inter-national youth movement.’

“Qatar Youth Hostels is a part of the international youth movement around the world. Its gates are con-stantly wide open to all young people who wish to get a QYH membership, which has many priv-ileges, most prominently QYH is a gate to a network of safe and clean youth hostels. A QYH member can take advantage of the services of more than 4000 youth hostels around the world.”

QYH members are prioritised to ‘discounted hostel accommoda-tion’, along with cost-reduced activities and trips in several youth hostels in different countries around the globe.

Besides, QYH members are entitled to avail upto 20% discount on their youth hostel accommoda-tion in more than 140 countries all over the world.

Al Ajami has invited all the youth, through their membership in QYH to take advantage of trav-els and adventurous trips, take part in conferences and meetings, exchange visits with GCC countries along with other Arab and foreign states, discover the world at delib-erately minimum and affordable rates, and make use of all the facil-ities and utilities of youth hostels.

They can also have access to youth hostels libraries, which are highly distinct scientific, cultural and social references with all its varied global and local weighted masterpiece volumes, and to their

BOD meeting rooms. This adds to the privileged discounts in a spec-trum of hospitals, most notably including Magrabi Hospitals, offer-ing up to 50% discount on QYH member’s treatment costs. QYH membership card this year, accord-ing to Al Ajami, costs QAR60. A

youth requires a copy of the ID card or passport, a personal photograph, and a complete membership appli-cation form to obtain QYH full membership. A member will have access to the full privileges that are currently under a future QYH Priv-ilege Growing Scheme.

A future QYH Privilege Growing Scheme involving communication with many authorities and organizations inside Qatar and abroad for more discounts and benefits for its members.

“QYH membership has many categories, most importantly the

Active Member, who must hold the Qatari citizenship, and is entitled to participate in and contribute to all activities, have access to all the rights and hold the full liability for all the obligations of membership,” said Halima Al Azekwi, Relationship and Marketing Officer in Qatar Youth Hostels.

Azekwi defined the Associate Member as a Qatari or non-Qatari person, under 18 who has enrolled in the Youth Hostels for a limited period yet has full access to the privileges and entitlements.

Furthermore, QYH membership categories involve the Honorary Member, who is decided by the Director thanks to the public and great services rendered by this Honorary Member to the State, Youth Hostels, or other entities that contribute to the public interest.

A titular Member is a person who has rendered distinguished service to the State, Youth Hostels, or other entities that operate in the youth domain, after approval by the Youth Hostels Executive Board.

QYH Membership conditions, according to Al Azekwi, stipulate that, excluding Associate Members, a member must be over 18 years old, of good conduct, standing and reputation, have not been convicted of an offence prejudicial to honor or integrity unless they have been restored to good standing or pardoned, have not been sacked or eliminated from any other youth centers or sporting, cultural or social clubs for disciplinary penalties or, otherwise, causes relating to public morality, public order or the established tradition in the State.

Duties and rights of members comprise the attainment of youth hostels objectives and goals, avoidance of all and any potential vulnerabilities to its entity or reputation, compliance with the statute, internal regulations, bylaws, decisions of the Director and instructions of the officers in the hostels, participation in and cooperation with other members in implementing the hostels activities and programs, maintenance and preservation of its facilities, utilities and movables, and consideration of the rules and morals while in the hostels.

He gave insight on emerging trends impacting technology. “With Global growth still struggling to accelerate, innovations in technol-ogy can act as an enabler of growth. Technology is the platform for inno-vation, sustainability and for gross welfare to the mass. The forces of digitisation and the rapid adoption of advanced Internet technologies are increasingly resulting in the

international establishment of a flexible and proven corporate archi-tecture that is increasingly being referred to as a “digital ecosystem. Digital eco system is significantly more than digital banking, it takes a holistic view of the customer.” Dr.

R Seetharaman, the Group Chief executive officer of Doha Bank and an economic expert, has achieved remarkable success in banking, trade, economics, investment, envi-ronment, social responsibility and charity.

Gulf English School (GES) held ‘Annual Concert’ recently. The theme of the concert

was ‘around the world in 80 minutes’.

The programme commenced with the recitation of the National Anthem followed by reading from ‘The Holy Quran’ by Ahmed Al

Abadeen. As part of the concert, children from Grade 1 to 8 recited songs from different parts of the world that took the audience on a journey from the Middle East to Europe, Africa and South America. The ethos was to highlight the cul-tural richness across the globe, its coalescing and intermingling

culture and traditions. The stage and the props too were a reflection of this. The vista was resplendent with the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, amongst other famous landmarks. Against this mélange of a global backdrop, the students pre-sented an enthralling spectacle that had the audience spellbound and

applauding. The staff band also took part by singing and playing instru-ments as part of the programme. The programme concluded with greetings and appreciation for coor-dinators, facilitators and the administrative staff, who contrib-uted to the overall grand success of the event.

A new analysis of data shows that more than 6.5 million students, or about 13 per-

cent in grades K-12, missed 15 or more days of school.

The study revealed that instances of chronic absenteeism are found in almost every school district, but that half of the nation’s chronically absent students were found in just 4 percent of districts.

The report, by Attendance

Works, a national educational ini-tiative that looks at the relationship between attendance and outcomes, and the Everyone Graduates Center at Johns Hopkins University School of Education, also found that the problem of chronic absenteeism disproportionately affected African American, Native American, Pacific Islander and Latino students, as well as students with learning disabilities.

The scope of the absenteeism matters “because chronic absence is really a proven early indicator of academic risk starting as early as preschool and kindergarten,” Hedy Chang, executive director of Attend-ance Works, said in a conference call. “By middle and high school, it is a surefire predictor of kids being on the path to drop out. And if it reaches high levels, the classroom churn can affect the learning of all

the students in the classroom, not just those who are chronically absent.” Among the most harshly affected areas were poor, urban school districts such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, Milwaukee, Cleveland and Detroit, where more than a third of all students were chroni-cally absent. Smaller, post-industrial cities such as Buffalo and Utica, N.Y., were also hard hit, with absentee rates often topping 50 percent.

Just by looking at images of win-ter scenery and imagining yourself in such a setting can

help you have increased cognitive control, say researchers.

Cognitive control is the ability to deliberately inhibit responses or make choices that maximise the long-term best interests of the indi-vidual. For example, when a person is very hungry and sees a sandwich but does not eat it, he/she is exhib-iting cognitive control.

“Metaphorical phrases like ‘coldly calculating’, ‘heated response’ and ‘cool-headed’ actually have some scientific validity, which we demonstrate in our study,” said lead researcher Idit Shalev from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Israel.

The findings, published in the journal Psychological Research, demonstrated that the perception of cold temperatures elicits greater cognitive control, even from a

photo. “Previous research focused on the actual effect of temperature on the psychological phenomenon known as ‘cognitive control’,” Sha-lev said.

“But this is the first time we were able to measure the effects of per-ceived temperature,” Shalev added.

In one of the experiments con-ducted for the study, 28 students were shown images of winter scen-ery, a temperature-neutral concrete street and a sunny landscape, and told to picture themselves in those settings.

The researchers then measured how the participants performed on an “anti-saccade task”, an estab-lished cognitive control measure which requires looking in the direc-tion opposite to which an object is moving. “The result indicated that those viewing the cold landscape did better and that even without a physical trigger, cognitive control can be activated through concep-tual processes alone,” Shalev said.

The researchers said there is a

possible explanation for the rela-tion of temperature and cognitive control with social proximity.

“While signals of warmth induce

a relaxed attitude, cool signals trig-ger alertness and a possible need for greater cognitive control,” Sha-lev explained.

Sotheby’s said yester-day it would auction a pair of “phenom-

enally rare” blue and pink diamond earrings next month that together may fetch up to $68m.

“The ‘Apollo and Artemis Diamonds’ will be the stars of our May sale in Geneva -- by far the most important pair of earrings ever offered at auction,” David Bennett, worldwide chair-man of Sotheby’s international jewellery division, said in a statement.

The earrings comprise two large pear-shaped gems of different hues. They will go on the block separately on May 16, the auction house said, adding that the seller wished to remain anonymous.

The 14.54-carat Apollo Blue, which is described by Sotheby’s as “the largest Internally Flawless Fancy Vivid Blue diamond ever to be offered at auction”, is estimated to fetch between $38m and $50m.

The 16-carat Artemis Pink, with its “Fancy Intense Pink” hue, mean-while, is expected to rake in $12.5-18m.

The diamonds were named after Apollo, the Greek god of music and of the Sun, and Artemis, his twin sister, who was goddess of the hunt and of the Moon. In Greek and Roman mythology, diamonds were believed to be the tears of the gods.

Who says only women make use of home remedies for various skin-related issues? Men do it

too, reveals a survey. The survey, by Big-stylist.com -- an online platform for beauty and grooming services, saw participation from 504 men aged between 25 to 50. As many as 36 per cent of them -- especially from Mumbai and Pune -- said they depend on home remedies for issues related to skin, especially their face. The market may be flooded with a range of fancy grooming products, but men limit their usage to only face washes and sunscreen lotions, the survey said. This was supported by the fact that only 3 to 10 per cent of the respondents agreed to using face packs or masks and scrubs. While most women in showbiz are shown to pre-fer men who are bare-chested and waxed, men in reality do not really believe in shaving or trimming. Only 14 per cent men said that they trim or wax body hair. “This is a really interesting finding, since mostly it’s only women who are known to look for home-remedy tutorials online for their beauty-related concerns. It was this survey that brought forth the fact that more and more men opt for home remedies too when it comes to clearing complexion or to get fairer skin,” Richa Singh, CEO, BigStylist.com, said in a statement.

The main attraction on the table during a festival - lamb by the leg. But options for a

modest holiday gathering can be rustled up more easily these days, thanks to the availability of tidy lamb roasts in netting.

Spring is the season to buy fresh lamb, as you’ll be rewarded with more flavour than a frozen cut yields. The shoulder is a juicier and chewier cut than the leg, so slow-roasting and braising are the optimal ways to cook it.

The headliner of chef Will Mor-ris’s Easter menu at Vermilion in Alexandria, Virginia, this year will be tender, rosy slices from a bone-less lamb roast rubbed with a paste of garlic and mint. He has stream-lined the preparation with a relatively short time for flavour infusion and exterior slathering only; no need to unroll the roast you bring home. He turns pan juices into a jus while the meat rests.

Garlic and Mint Roasted Lamb

6 to 8 servingsIf the lamb roast comes in cot-

ton netting, you can leave it on. If the netting is elastic or made of nylon, it’s best to remove it and tie the roast with kitchen twine.

You’ll need an instant-read thermometer.

MAKE AHEAD: The lamb rubbed with paste needs to rest for 2 hours at a cool room temperature.

From Will Morris, executive chef at Vermilion restaurant in Alexandria, Virginia.

IngredientsFor the lamb8 cloves garlic, coarsely

chopped

2 ounces fresh mint leavesLeaves from 1 sprig rosemary,

coarsely choppedFinely grated zest of 2 lemons

(about 1 tablespoon)Kosher saltFreshly ground black pepper1/4 cup olive oilOne 4-pound boneless leg of

lamb roast, tied or in cotton netting (see headnote)

For the jus2 teaspoons olive oil1 medium carrot, scrubbed well

and coarsely chopped1/2 medium onion, coarsely

chopped1 rib celery, coarsely chopped1 cup vinegar 3/4 cup no-salt-added chicken

brothKosher saltFreshly ground black pepper

StepsFor the lamb: Combine the gar-

lic, mint, rosemary, lemon zest and

a generous pinch each of salt and pepper in the bowl of a mortar and pestle or in a food processor; grind or pulse for 20 seconds, then add the oil. Grind or pulse to form a paste.

Lay the roast on a platter lined with plastic wrap, fat side down. Rub all the paste into the meat all over; let it rest at a cool room tem-perature for 2 hours.

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.Heat a stove-top-safe roasting

pan over medium-high heat. Once it’s quite hot, add the lamb, fat side down first; sear until golden all over, turning as needed.

Transfer to the oven; slow-roast for 2 1/2 hours, or until the internal temperature reaches 140 to 145 degrees (medium-rare). Carefully pour the pan juices into a large liq-uid (heatproof) measuring cup.

Let the meat rest for 30 to 45 minutes; meanwhile, make the jus: Combine the oil, carrot, onion and celery in medium saute pan over

medium-high heat. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, or until softened. Add the vinegar and stir with a spatula, dislodging any browned bits. Cook for 10 minutes, or until the vinegar has reduced by half.

Stir in the reserved pan juices and the broth. Reduce the heat to medium; cook for 10 to 20 minutes, or to the desired consistency (the longer you cook the jus, the more concentrated its flavor will be but there will be less of it). Strain, if desired, discarding the solids. Taste and season with salt and/or pepper, as needed.

Transfer the lamb to a cutting board; discard the netting or twine. Cut crosswise into thin slices and serve warm, with the jus.

HEALTH TUESDAY 11 APRIL 201710

If you have been wondering whether it is better to eat or fast before a workout, researchers

now have an answer. A new study has found that exercise on empty stomach is better for your health in the long term.

The study analysed effects of eating versus fasting on gene expression in adipose (fat) tissue in response to exercise.

After eating, adipose tissue “is busy responding to the meal and a bout of exercise at this time will not stimulate the same (beneficial) changes in adipose tissue”, explained corresponding author of the study Dylan Thompson from University of Bath in Britain. “This means that exercise in a fasted state might provoke more favourable changes in adipose tissue, and this could be beneficial for health in the long term,” Thompson added.

“We propose that feeding is likely to blunt long-term adipose tissue adaptation to regular

exercise,” the researchers noted in the study published in the Ameri-can Journal of Physiology

-- Endocrinology and Metabolism. The study participants were a

group of overweight males who walked for 60 minutes at 60 per cent maximum oxygen consump-tion on an empty stomach and, on another occasion, two hours after consuming a high-calorie carbo-hydrate-rich breakfast.

The research team took multi-ple blood samples after eating or fasting and after exercising.

The researchers also collected fat tissue samples immediately before and one hour after walking. Gene expression in the adipose tis-sue differed significantly in the two trials. The expression of two genes, PDK4 and HSL, increased when the men fasted and exercised and decreased when they ate before exercising.

The rise in PDK4 likely indicates that stored fat was used to fuel metabolism during exercise instead of carbohydrates from the recent

meal. HSL typically increases when adipose tissue uses stored energy to support increased activity, such as during exercise, Thompson said.

These results reinforce the view that “adipose tissue often faces

competing challenges,” Thompson wrote. “This is the first study to show that feeding prior to acute exercise affects post-exercise adi-pose tissue gene expression,” the study said.

Exercise on empty stomach better for health

Being obese or overweight may influence the blood tests used to assess the levels of inflammation

for rheumatoid arthritis in women, researchers have found.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that affects joint linings, causing painful swelling.

The study revealed that obesity may influence blood tests C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) -- used to diagnose and monitor rheumatoid arthritis.

Among women with rheumatoid arthritis, a greater body mass index (BMI) was associated with greater CRP, espe-cially among women with severe obesity.

There was also a modest associa-tion between obesity and ESR in women.

“Our results suggest that obesity may lead to increased levels of CRP and ESR in women with rheumatoid arthritis,” said Michael George, from the Univer-

sity of Pennsylvania in the US.“The increase in these levels of inflam-

mation was not because rheumatoid arthritis was worse in these women. In fact, we found that obesity leads to very similar increases in these lab tests even in women without rheumatoid arthritis,” George added.

These links were also seen in men in the general population, but the connec-tion between obesity and inflammation was different in men with rheumatoid arthritis. In these individuals, lower BMI was associated with greater CRP and ESR.

The finding, which appear in Arthri-tis Care & Research, may be important for understanding the relationship between weight and inflammation and how it may differ between men and women, the researchers said. Physicians need to be careful when interpreting these lab tests since both rheumatoid arthritis and obesity can contribute to lev-els of inflammation.

Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor says after his upcoming film

“Half Girlfriend”, based on an eponymous novel, people might start debating on the importance of knowing one’s native language over English.

The actor, at the trailer launch of the film yesterday with director Mohit Suri, writer Chetan Bhagat and co-star Shraddha Kapoor, said:

“Since the character goes through the trouble of speaking in English language, I think after watching the film, people will start talking about the importance of knowing one’s native language over English.”

“In our country, no matter how intelligent you are, if your English language is not fluent, people look down upon you. It is a shame.”

He added: “Knowing English is good, but why do we feel embar-rassed to speak in our native language? Why do people start judging you based on that?”

The novel divulges the

sentiments and linguistic struggles of a backward rural Bhojpuri-laced Hindi-speaking boy from Bihar as he enrolls himself at an English-medium college and falls in love with a “high class English-speak-ing rich Delhi girl”.

Sharing his experience on this, Bhagat said: “During the launch of the book ‘Half Girlfriend’ I did a sur-vey and while I asked a girl if she would make a boy her boyfriend if he does not know English, she replied, ‘No way, never’. In a

country like India, I felt very strange and at times guilty, as an English language writer.”

Directed by Mohit Suri, pro-duced by Ekta Kapoor, the film

“Half Girlfriend” will release on May 19.

“Harry Potter And The Cursed Child”, a stage adaptation of JK Rowl-

ing’s fantastical world of witches and wizards, cast a magical spell at the Olivier Awards on Sunday, scooping nine wins at Britain’s big night for theatre.

The critically-acclaimed pro-duction, which opened last year in London’s West End, went in with 11 nominations. Its victorious haul made it “the most decorated pro-duction in the ceremony’s history”, awards organisers said.

The eighth story in the “Harry Potter” series, the play follows Rowling’s young boy wizard and friends Ron and Hermione into adulthood. It took best new play, best actor, best actor and actress in a supporting role as well as best director.

“The power of imagination is infinite,” director John

Tiffany said in his acceptance speech. “We need it now more than ever.” Jamie Parker, who portrays the older Harry, won best actor, beating off competition from the likes of Ian McKellen and Ed Harris.

Anthony Boyle, who plays Scor-pius Malfoy, took best actor in a supporting role while best actress in a supporting role went to Noma Dumezweni, who plays an adult

Hermione.“Thank you J.K. Rowling for cre-

ating Hermione and...the privilege of being able to play Hermione is overwhelming and humbling,” Dumezweni said.

The play also won best lighting design, best sound design, best cos-tume design and best set design.

Other winners at the glitzy cer-emony at London’s Royal Albert Hall included children playing instruments in “School of Rock”, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber’s adaptation of the 2003 comedy film,

who won in the outstanding achievement in music category.

“Groundhog Day”, an adaptation of the famed 1993 film starring Bill Murray, won best new musical as well as best actor in a musical for Andy Karl. m“Glee” actress Amber Riley scooped the best actress in a musical award for “Dreamgirls” while fellow cast member Adam J Bernard won best actor in a sup-porting role in a musical.

Billie Piper won best actress for “Yerma”, an adaptation of the play by Federico Garcia Lorca, which

won best revival.“Jesus Christ Superstar” won best

musical revival. “Our ladies of Per-petual Succour” won best new comedy while “Akhnaten” took the prize for best new opera production.

Actor and director Kenneth Branagh was honoured with the Special Award in recognition of his

“outstanding contribution to British theatre”. Performances on the night included songs from musicals “The Girls”, “Dreamgirls” and “School of Rock”.

For the second straight weekend, the tie-wearing toddler of “The Boss Baby” nosed out Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” at

North American box offices, while the new “Smurf” movie came in a distant and disappoint-ing third, according to industry estimates.

“Baby,” the animated tale about a cuteness competition pitting babies against pets, took in $26.3m for the three-day weekend, Exhib-itor Relations reported, bringing its two-week total to $89.4m. Alec Baldwin voices the chief baby in the DreamWorks production, distrib-uted by Fox.

“Beauty” showed continuing strength, net-ting $25m in its fourth week out for an impressive North American total so far of $432.3m. With its intricate production and rich musical score, the Disney film, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, is the year’s highest-grossing film so far. But Sony, which had been banking on the cuddly appeal of the blue munchkins in “Smurfs: The Lost Village,” faced disappointing numbers. The film’s $14m open-ing weekend was “one of the worst starts in recent memory for an animated offering from a major Hollywood studio,” said the Hollywood

Reporter website. The original film in the series, “The Smurfs,” earned much of its $563.7m gross on overseas ticket sales, and Sony appears to be hoping this film will follow form.

“Going in Style,” a Warner Bros. comedy starring Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin and Michael Caine as an octogenarian trio deter-mined to rob a bank after their pension money goes up in smoke, placed fourth in its opening weekend, taking in $12.5 million. And fifth was Paramount’s “Ghost in the Shell,” starring Scar-lett Johansson in an adaptation of a Japanese manga tale. It had weekend revenues of $7.4m.

Nasa has postponed the third launch attempt of its super pressure balloon (SPB) from

Wanaka, New Zealand, yesterday due to poor weather at ground and surface levels.

“Wind speeds were just slightly above those required for launch, and with the uncertainty for pre-cipitation in the area, the team made the decision to postpone for the day,” Nasa scientists said in a

blog post. No launch attempt is scheduled for today. Nasa will announce by 2pm today, whether or not tomorrow’s weather will sup-port a launch attempt.

The first attempt to launch the balloon -- designed to carry a pio-neering telescope to detect ultra-high-energy cosmic rays from near space -- was cancelled due to unacceptable stratospheric wind conditions.

The second attempt was can-celled due to a mechanical issue

with a crane used for launch oper-ations, which has since been resolved. The purpose of the flight is to test and validate the SPB tech-nology with the goal of long-durat ion f l ight at mid-latitudes.

In addition, the University of Chicago’s Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon (EUSO-SPB) is a mission of opportunity flying on the 2017 SPB test flight. EUSO-SPB is designed to detect high-energy cosmic rays

originating from outside our galaxy as they penetrate the Earth’s atmosphere.

As these high-energy particles enter the atmosphere, they inter-act with nitrogen molecules in the air and create a UV fluorescence light. EUSO-SPB will be looking downward at a broad swathe of the Earth’s atmosphere to detect the UV fluorescence from these deep space cosmic rays coming in from above, as per the information given by the concerned officials.

In a bid to remove problem apps and to focus on quality, Apple will stop supporting 32-bit

apps with the release of iOS 11 later this year, meaning that many legacy applications will no longer function at all.

“Starting with iOS 10.3, Apple has started alerting users when they open a 32-bit app on iOS.

The pop up notification reads that the app must be updated by the developer or else it may not work with future versions of iOS,” tech website 9to5mac.com reported on Monday.

The tech giant started support-ing 64-bit applications with the launch of the iPhone 5s in Sep-tember 2013.

The company also asked developers to submit new apps with 64-bit support since

February 2015 and app updates starting June 2015. Last month, Apple has officially released iOS 10.3 update that has major updates regarding its newly launched Air-Pods, WiFi calling and SiriKit. Other minor updates include new

security features and a new iCloud section under the Apple ID Set-tings menu.

The new section shows a breakdown of cloud storage usage. This feature also shows which apps use iCloud.
