THE SUNSET STRIP

9

DID YOU KNOW?

In 2012 a documentary titled Sunset Strip was released, featuring interviews with stars like Keanu Reeves, Johnny Depp, Mickey Rourke, Dan Aykroyd, Hugh Hefner, Sharon Stone and many more. Get an insider’s look at the Strip by streaming or downloading the movie, SunsetStripTheMovie.com

The Sunset Tower Hotel was once an apartment building that old Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe, Bugsy Siegel, Frank Sinatra and John Wayne (who kept his cow on his balcony) called home.

The Las Vegas Strip was named after the Sunset Strip.

Sunset Strip boasts tall billboards that are second only to Times Square in size and cost.

INSIDER TIPS

Careful when parking on the Strip—some areas do not have meters but you must still pay at the kiosks. Be sure to read all signs and you won’t have any problems. You can also park at one of many garages or public lots ($10-$20/night).

Visitors to Sunset Plaza can park in the lots behind the plaza for free, but don’t stray away.

Check out what bands are playing the Strip while you’re in town at visitwesthollywood.com/events

TODAYThe Sunset Strip continues to launch new artists and attract crowds to legendary music venues like The Roxy Theatre, Whisky a Go Go and The Viper Room. Meanwhile, swank hotel bars such as Tower Bar at the Sunset Tower Hotel and Skybar at Mondrian boast some of the most popular and exclusive hideaways on the Strip.

The Strip isn’t all nightlife though; daytime visitors will enjoy the high-end shopping and alfresco dining of Sunset Plaza, one of the hottest places to “see and be seen” in Los Angeles. Experience the area entirely on foot, taking in the fabulous Southern California sunshine and spectacular city views. See why visitors are drawn from around the world to this eclectic destination.

A BRIEF HISTORYAfter decades of notoriety, the Sunset Strip continues to blaze its own path as a world-famous cultural landmark, setting trends in music, hotels, dining and shopping. This most famous stretch of Sunset Boulevard begins and ends in West Hollywood, and like the city it calls home, it is constantly breaking new ground and reinventing itself.

Though it’s often been portrayed in movies like Sunset Boulevard, Almost Famous and Rock of Ages, visitors say that nothing compares to seeing the Sunset Strip up close and in person. Bordered on the west by Beverly Hills and on the east by Hollywood, this iconic stretch of Sunset Boulevard features an array of world-class hotels, nightclubs, restaurants, shops and spas.

Through the years, the Sunset Strip has seen it all, starting with the seedy glitz of the 1920s, when Prohibition fueled the rise of nightclubs and speakeasies. Because West Hollywood was not yet an incorporated city, this strip of Sunset Boulevard was lightly policed, making the Strip the perfect playground for the rebellious denizens

of early Hollywood. By the 1940s, swanky nightclubs like Ciro’s, Trocadero and Mocambo reigned supreme, attracting A-list celebrity clientele like Marilyn Monroe along with less savory characters like gangster Bugsy Siegel, who called the Strip his stomping grounds.

In the 1960s, the Sunset Strip became the major gathering place for the counterculture movement in Los Angeles. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison were fixtures of the Strip and the surrounding West Hollywood landscape. The Whisky a Go Go introduced go-go dancers to the U.S. and propelled The Doors—who at the time were the club’s house band—to fame and notoriety. The Strip continued to be a major focal point for the punk rock and new wave scenes during the late 1970s, and it also became ground zero for the colorful glam metal scene, hosting bands like Mötley Crüe, Guns N’ Roses and Poison throughout the 1980s.

SANTA MONICA BOULEVARD: HISTORIC ROUTE 66

11

DID YOU KNOW?

Walk Score, a company that maintains a public-access walkability index of any place in the United States, Canada and Australia, has named West Hollywood the “Most Walkable City in California.”

Santa Monica Boulevard’s annual Halloween Carnaval is said to be the largest Halloween street party in the world.

Santa Monica Boulevard is named in the classic Sheryl Crow song, “All I Wanna Do ( Is Have Some Fun) .”

The Pride Parade on Santa Monica Boulevard is the second-largest event in Los Angeles County, second only to the Rose Parade.

The city approved permanent rainbow crosswalks. Installed in 2012, the crosswalks, painted in the rainbow colors of the LGBT flag, represent gay pride and LGBT rights and can be viewed on Google Earth.

INSIDER TIPS

The Pickup Line is a fun and free trolley service that operates on Friday and Saturday nights from 8 PM to 3 AM Look for the brightly colored trolleys, which stop at designated stops along Santa Monica Boulevard between La Peer Avenue and Fairfax Boulevard.

Santa Monica Boulevard is pedestrian and pet-friendly, with wide sidewalks, many crosswalks and outdoor cafés.

Parking structures on or near Santa Monica Boulevard include the Municipal Parking Structure at the West Hollywood Library, on the corner of San Vicente and Melrose. More information can be found by visiting weho.org and clicking on Parking Services.

Parking on streets adjacent to the Boulevard is mostly permit-only due to the residential community, so be sure to read the street signs. You can obtain day permit passes from the West Hollywood Sheriff’s station.

On Santa Monica Boulevard’s eastern side, visitors can check out local favorite bars and restaurants such as Laurel Hardware, Now Boarding, The Hudson, Harlowe Bar and the James Beard Award-nominated “seafood shack” Connie and Ted’s.

Heading west, you arrive in the heart of West Hollywood and discover unique celebrity-frequented restaurants, eclectic boutiques, coffee shops, gyms and bookstores. With the rainbow flags along The Boulevard, this area is where you see firsthand the guiding principle on which West Hollywood was built: the freedom to be yourself and to live life your own way. Santa Monica Boulevard is home to the most popular gay and lesbian scene in Los Angeles, with popular gay nightclubs like The Abbey, Flaming Saddles, Micky’s, GYM Sports Bar, Fiesta Cantina and Revolver, all of which are bustling on any given evening. From upscale to laid-back, anyone fits in when you’re experiencing Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood!

A BRIEF HISTORYWest Hollywood has never been known for following trends. It’s known for setting them, and nowhere else is this more apparent than on Santa Monica Boulevard.

This eclectic thoroughfare, which was once an industrial strip of road dotted with film studios as well as the Los Angeles Pacific Railway, connects the east side of Los Angeles with the Pacific Ocean, passing through Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Century City, West LA and ending in Santa Monica. And while this street goes through various personas as you head in either direction, nowhere is Route 66 more diverse, fun or pedestrian-friendly than the 1.9 mi/3.05 km stretch that runs through West Hollywood.

Route 66 was America’s main road in the 1950s for travelers heading west, and today, you can still see signage for Route 66. West Hollywood’s portion of “The Boulevard” runs from La Brea Avenue on the east to Doheny Drive on the west.

The beginnings of Hollywood can be traced back to the United Artists movie studio in the 1930s on Formosa Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard. Today, this studio is known as The Lot and is home to Oprah Winfrey’s OWN television empire.

You never know who you might see reading a movie script or discussing their next role at The Courtyard Brasserie at Palihouse Holloway. Located just off of Santa Monica Boulevard on Holloway Drive, at the Palihouse hotel attracts celebrities such as Zoe Saldana, John Mayer and Robert Pattinson.

The Historic club the Troubador on Santa Monica Boulevard, played host to Elton John’s first U.S. concert and continues to house both indie bands and bigger acts like Coldplay and The Cure.

This walkable district is an unrivaled international destination for design savvy professionals and sophisticated shoppers alike.

Back in the 1950s, the neighborhood held only a handful of shops, studios and cafés catering to the design trade, and Ed’s Coffee Shop was the place to meet fellow designers over a toasted ham sandwich and a cup of joe. Later, in the 1960s, businesses like Phyllis Morris Originals became “designers to the stars” and brought more and more style-seekers into the area, slowly transforming it into one of the most distinguished design districts in the country. As more design trade resources opened their doors, the influx of artists, dressmakers, upholsterers, dancers and musicians fleshed out the bohemian spirit of the burgeoning design district.

The landmark upon which The Charlie resides today was first built and established in 1924 by the Ruth Gordon family. Word has it that numerous movie star legends have roamed these grounds in the past, living out their glorious days to the fullest. Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe and Gloria Swanson are such legends who were believed to have called, at one point or another, these grounds home.

In 2002, threatened by redevelopment, this historical landmark was acquired by Menachem Treivush and has since undergone a multimillion dollar renovation. By carefully preserving historical details incorporating the technology of today and dedicating careful attention to detail, Mr. Treivush has rapidly built The Charlie into the unique establishment that it is today. Since reopening to the public in 2008, The Charlie has become known as the hidden gem of the legendary West Hollywood.

The Ramada West Hollywood sits on the site of the former Tropicana Hotel and Motor Lodge on Santa Monica Boulevard—near the end of the famous Route 66. The famed rock 'n' roll refuge with the black-tiled swimming pool, “The Trop” was where Jim Morrison lived, as well as Tom Waits, where Andy Warhol filmed Heat, where Janis Joplin partied and where other residents included Blondie, Led Zeppelin, Springsteen, Sam Shepard, the Clash, the Beach Boys, Elvis Costello, and Guns N' Roses. It was a first stop on the way up the rock 'n' roll ladder, as well as a place to stay once you’d made it. The big record companies grew on Santa Monica Boulevard and the Sunset Strip during this era and made LA the rock ‘n’ roll recording center of America.

The Ramada West Hollywood was built on this hallowed site in the 1980s and is still a stopover for the entertainment industry, as well as international leisure travelers. Given its provenance, it’s understandable why the Ramada Plaza has become the de facto hotel for both the music and entertainment business in West Hollywood.

In-room fireplaces with handcrafted mantels are complemented by hand-woven Turkish carpets.

The property boasts one of the most magical outdoor spaces in the city. The Private Rooftop—replete with native gardens, a saltwater pool, cabañas, an outdoor sunken fireplace and 360-degree views of the Hollywood Hills—is considered one of the premiere private spaces in Los Angeles. World-renowned chefs flock to West Hollywood to offer their delectable cuisines to the A-list clientele who frequent the local restaurants. Considered one of the finest restaurants in Los Angeles, Lucques—from Suzanne Goin—is located in West Hollywood on Melrose Avenue. Also popular among celebrities, but frequented by locals and visitors as well, is Cecconi’s, a classic Italian restaurant from the people behind the renowned private club Soho House.

The Sunset Strip is home to a diverse selection of notable dining experiences. The Church Key has been reeling in Young Hollywood with its stylish setting and playful American take on dim sum. Outdoor

dining is also popular at Sunset Plaza, where alfresco dining at Maia and Le Petit Four offers front-row seating right along the action-packed Sunset Strip—ideal for spotting exotic cars and glamorous people.

West Hollywood’s wide selection of dining establishments—from casual to upscale and classic to modern—makes this city Southern California’s most diverse and exciting culinary destination.

For a unique culinary experience that evolves into an exciting bar scene at night, try Laurel Hardware on Santa Monica Boulevard. If you’re in the mood for Mexican cuisine with a vegan twist, try Gracias Madre. Acclaimed Chef Michael Cimarusti has launched Connie & Ted’s, his modern take on a classic New England seafood shack. Eveleigh on the Sunset Strip offers an ever-changing seasonal menu using only the freshest ingredients. DID YOU KNOW?

The original Barney’s Beanery in West Hollywood opened in 1920 and has a fascinating history full of colorful stories, many involving celebrities. Among those who made Barney’s their home were Janis Joplin, who had her last drink at Barney’s before her untimely death, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, who was eventually thrown out one night for urinating on the bar, and in more recent years, Quentin Tarantino, who wrote much of Pulp Fiction at his favorite booth by the bar.

Rainbow Bar & Grill is where Vincente Minnelli proposed to Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe met Joe DiMaggio on a blind date. It was also featured by Guns N’ Roses in their music video for the song "November Rain." Try the pizza and delicious family-style Italian food in their romantic and cozy dining room.

INSIDER TIPS

Be advised that self-parking is limited at many dining establishments. Valet parking is the preferred parking method, with fees ranging from $3 to $12. It is customary to tip your valet parking attendant.

Reservations are recommended at most fine-dining establishments, so be sure to call the restaurant in advance or book on opentable.com.

For the complete West Hollywood experience, request outdoor seating and dine alfresco. People - and car-watching are favorite pastimes in West Hollywood.

A standard tip for a meal is 15%-20%.

West Hollywood’s hotels offer phenomenal dining options and are a great way to experience each hotel’s distinctive atmosphere, even if you’re not an overnight guest. Check out Boxwood at The London West Hollywood, Palihouse Café and Courtyard Brasserie, Oliver’s Prime at Grafton on Sunset, Tower Bar at Sunset Tower, Herringbone at Mondrian, 24/7 at The Standard, Cavatina at Sunset Marquis and Riot House at Andaz West Hollywood.

For a more informal experience, try the classic Mel’s Drive-In on Sunset Boulevard, which is open 24 hours. Ed’s Coffee Shop on Robertson Boulevard is one of the most enduring establishments in the West Hollywood Design District, having offered West Hollywood locals a cozy homestyle eatery for more than 50 years. And, of course, The Abbey serves not only the world’s best mojitos, but a top-notch menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, too.

Whether it’s day or night, dining is a see-and-be-seen activity, with tastes ranging from Mexican to Japanese, Italian to California cuisine, and steakhouse to organic. Bon appétit!

DID YOU KNOW?The Kardashians moved their West Coast DASH location from Calabasas to West Hollywood in 2012. Visit the store on Melrose whether you’re looking for high fashion or a souvenir.

Celebs have to run errands, just like we do! Some of the best places to spot a star in West Hollywood are at Book Soup on the Sunset Strip, browsing books and magazines, or at Whole Foods on Santa Monica Boulevard, shopping for groceries.

INSIDER TIPS

At Sunset Plaza, free parking is available behind the plaza at no cost to customers shopping or eating at the plaza.

Keep your eyes open, many of West Hollywood’s fashion boutiques have a large celebrity clientele.

in one of several upscale alfresco dining spots. (The people-watching can be almost as much fun as the shopping.) Explore Sunset Plaza and park for free in their designated lots—you can’t miss the signs.

One of the best things about shopping in West Hollywood is that the design and display of the stores are given nearly as much attention as the clothing. These cutting-edge structures elevate the shopping experience well beyond the mainstream, as is the case with interior designer Kelly Wearstler’s first stand-alone fashion boutique on Melrose Avenue. 3.1 Philip Lim’s striking modernist design serves as the perfect backdrop for the clean and crisp lines of the clothing. The Balenciaga and Alberta Ferretti stores—located less than a block from each other on Melrose—are must-sees for any design and fashion enthusiast.

Santa Monica Boulevard also has its share of fashion, mostly geared toward guys, including trendy men’s sportswear store LASC, Brick + Mortar and the flagship store from well-known underwear brand Andrew Christian.

Nightlife in West Hollywood is densely concentrated and conveniently walkable. Try hitting several different spots in one night, commuting either by foot or by taxi.

Nightlife on Santa Monica Boulevard just got easier with the Pickup Line from the city of West Hollywood. The Pickup runs a four-mile long loop along Santa Monica Boulevard with stops every two to three blocks, offering passengers a lift every 15 minutes Friday and Saturday evenings.

If you’re driving, it’s recommended that you use one of the City of West Hollywood’s local parking lots or a private garage (ranging from $6 to $15), and walk to your destination. Check visitwesthollywood.com for additional parking information.

Bars and clubs in Los Angeles are open until 2 AM, and usually get crowded around 10 PM Last call for alcohol is around 1:30 AM.

In the world-renowned gay district of Santa Monica Boulevard, crowds flock to pulsing gay clubs like Flaming Saddles, Rage, Revolver, Fiesta Cantina, Micky’s and, just south on Robertson Boulevard, The Abbey and Here Lounge. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of themed nights, attractive crowds and innovative drinks in an anything-goes atmosphere. Moving towards the east side of the city, you’ll find local favorites like Laurel Hardware, Now Boarding, Surly Goat and The Hudson.

West Hollywood has always had a reputation for living it up. With infamous live music venues, swanky lounges and pulsing dance clubs to choose from, it’s no surprise that West Hollywood’s population nearly doubles on the weekend. But it’s not just weekends that are hot in WeHo; any night of the week you’ll find vibrant crowds and streets alive with fun-seekers.

The Sunset Strip continues to reinvent itself as Los Angeles’ nightlife and entertainment epicenter. It first gained notoriety during the “Roaring Twenties” for discreet gambling and speakeasies that made it a playground for the rich and famous. In the 1960s, the counterculture movement moved in and musicians like Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix performed regularly at local music venues. The 1980s brought the legendary antics of rockers like Aerosmith, Guns N’ Roses and Mötley Crüe, who turned West Hollywood into the epicenter of raging rock 'n' roll excess.

Today, world-famous clubs like the Viper Room, Whisky a Go Go and The Roxy Theatre light up the Strip with an infinite variety of musical styles. Countless top musical acts got their break in these

legendary clubs and sometimes drop in to make an impromptu appearance—like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters have done at The Roxy. While on the Sunset Strip you may also want to check out any of the decadent hotel bars such as the Tower Bar at Sunset Tower, Skybar at the Mondrian or Bar 1200 at the Sunset Marquis.

If you’re looking for a classic nightclub experience, consider Bootsy Bellows, 1 OAK and Henry’s, but note that you may need to reserve a table to get in. WeHo also offers a selection of drinking and dining establishments offering good times any

night of the week. Start on the west side of the Strip at The Church Key, State Social House, Pearl’s Liquor Bar and Eveleigh. A few blocks east will take you to the infamous mechanical bull at Saddle Ranch Chop House. End with margaritas from Cabo Cantina or a fireside nightcap at The Den of Hollywood.

Moving south of the Sunset Strip, the nightlife on Santa Monica Boulevard is full of energy. Here, the legendary Troubadour has helped launch some of music’s most talented performers—from greats like Elton John, James Taylor and Van Morrison to today’s top upcoming indie acts.

West Hollywood is at the heart of the Los Angeles region and surrounded by must-see hot spots in every direction. Here are a few of our favorite things to do in and around WeHo.

MELROSE DISTRICT

For a more funky and eclectic shopping experience, visit the eastern end of Melrose Avenue (1.2 mi/ 1.93 km from WeHo), which runs from Fairfax to Highland Avenue. Shop at trendsetting, independent and budget-friendly retailers, vintage thrift shops and charming boutiques.

MALIBU BEACHES

Crowds pack the shores in Santa Monica and Venice, but the spectacular beaches of Malibu and the Pacific Palisades are beautiful retreats from the city. Will Rogers State beach in the Pacific Palisades, the unofficial “gay beach” of Los Angeles, is ideal for beachside drinks or games of volleyball, while Point Dume and Zuma Beach in Malibu offer great surfing and crystal-clear water.

MOVIE SCREENINGS AND CONCERTS AT

HOLLYWOOD FOREVER CEMETERY

6000 SANTA MONICA BOULEVARD,

LOS ANGELES, CA 90038

323.469.1181

Take any opportunity possible to check out Hollywood Forever (4 mi/6.44 km from WeHo), whether it’s an outdoor movie, concert or tour. The Cinespia Cemetery Screenings occur every summer and on the Day of the Dead on The Fairbanks Lawn. Pack a picnic dinner and even drinks as alcohol on the lawn is permitted. There’s even a DJ who spins records before and after screenings. Creepy much? Not really, there’s something about Hollywood Forever that transcends creepiness and is just plain cool.

PICNICKING AT THE GETTY CENTER

1200 GETTY CENTER DRIVE,

LOS ANGELES, CA 90049

310.440.7300

At the top of everyone’s “must-see” list is the Getty (9 mi/14.48 km from WeHo). Find beauty and art even outside of the museum itself. What’s more, it’s all free. All you have to pay for is parking. Pack a picnic, catch some rays, read and frolic on the well-kept and manicured lawns. The Getty is great for groups and even better for dates, so visit this extraordinary gem. It’s one of LA’s finest.

DOWNTOWN ARTS DISTRICT

The Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles is a hidden oasis of art galleries, boutiques, restaurants and bars. Spend the day browsing through warehouse ateliers and the evening catching live music at one of the district's several dive bars and performance spaces. Make sure to visit Angel City Brewery, one of LA's best craft breweries, before the night is over!

VENICE

Venice, once infamous as Los Angeles’ “Dogtown,” is still rough around the edges but is now home to a wide variety of creative professionals in addition to skaters and surfers. The coffee shops and boutiques along Abbot Kinney epitomize the new Venice, a fashion blogger's paradise of California boho style. Fortunately, the old Venice is very much alive on the Venice Boardwalk, still bursting with performance artists, muscleheads, street vendors and other eccentrics.

SILVER LAKE

The hipster capital of the Los Angeles area, Silver Lake is the neighborhood of choice for aspiring musicians, poets and artists. You¹ll find all kinds of alternative outposts here, from record stores to leather bars, as well as a fusion of hipster and Hispanic culture that¹s uniquely Californian.
