Dear Parents and Carers, As we move through Holy Week this year, we are exposed to the radical nature of God’s forgiveness in the manner in which Jesus accepts his crucifixion and death. Jesus is a victim of great injustice but instead of nursing feelings of hurt, anger, disgust and contempt, he exhibits a strong sense of compassion toward those responsible for his execution when he says, “Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing”. Jesus’ lack of self-pity is further illustrated as he slowly approached his death, crucified between two criminals and mocked by the religious officials and others who passed by. When one of the criminals makes fun of him saying, “Are you the Messiah? Then, save yourself and us!” Jesus has no angry response. Instead, when the second criminal asks, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom,” Jesus does not ask him what he has done or how repentant he is, but with compassion responds, “Today, you will be with me in paradise.” The events of Holy Week remind us of our calling to be active Christians in the way we lead our own lives. If we are harbouring hurt within us, Jesus’ actions can encourage us towards forgiveness and away from grudges and bitterness. We have all experienced hurt through the actions or words of another and this hurt we might have carried for years and deprived ourselves of the opportunity to embrace peace, hope, gratitude and joy by being unforgiving. Forgiveness is a decision to let go of resentment and thoughts of revenge. In place of anger, confusion, maybe anxiety or even depression through being swallowed up by our own bitterness or sense of injustice, we can move away from our role as victim and relieve the power, that the offending person or situation has on our life. As we let go of hurt and resentment and don't allow them to define our life, we open ourselves to find compassion and understanding. Slowly, we embrace forgiveness and begin once more to live a truly Christian life. Jesus’ example to us on Good Friday, clearly defined for us the extent of God’s forgiveness and the encouragement for us to do likewise in our own limited human way. But Jesus’ example has an after effect as well, for on Easter Sunday he rose gloriously to a new life. No doubt this was the ambition of the three Nations that embraced forgiveness and reconciliation, instead of punishment and revenge. How about us this Holy Week? Is there unforgiveness we still have to deal with, that overshadows our lives? End of Term 1 Well the 10 week first term is finally coming to an end. I am sure you are all welcoming your well-deserved break. I know we have a few weary bodies in various classes and those poor parents who are ready to take a breather from preparing lunches and assisting with homework. As I said to our Kindergarten students they should be very proud of themselves completing their first term of school and for the marvellous achievements that they have made. In fact all the children need to be congratulated on their hard work, efforts and a fabulous start to 2017! I would also like to thank the fantastic teaching and administration staff at Prouille for their ongoing commitment and valuable contribution to quality learning and teaching at our school. A special thank you to our School Executive, Ms. Karen Townsend and Miss Jessica Russell for their hard work and assistance. Thank you for your very warm welcome and amazing support during my settling in to the Prouille Catholic Community as I sincerely appreciate it. Cross Country The School Cross Country will be held on Thursday 6th April at Gillespie Fields at Knox College. This is an optional activity and is only for the children who have elected to participate. Children will walk to the course and will depart school at 9.00am. We plan to be back at school by 12.00pm. Children participating in this event need to wear their sports uniform, sunscreen and a hat. They will also need to bring a water bottle and their recess. We are very grateful to Knox College for allowing us to use their facilities. In addition to this we extend a warm and sincere thank you to the many Prouille parents and students of St. Leos for assisting us with the marshalling and organisation of this event. We are praying for sunshine but in the event of inclement weather we will postpone this event till early Term 2. School Uniform The children return to school in full winter uniform in Term 2. Boys are permitted to wear the school uniform long trousers or the winter uniform shorts with long black socks. For sport the children can wear school sport’s uniform shorts or the school uniform long track pants. Farewell This week we farewell Amanda O’Brien, our very talented music teacher as she heads off with her family to Port Macquarie. I know you will join me in thanking Amanda for the valuable contribution she has made to quality learning and teaching at Prouille. We wish her every success and happiness in her new endeavours. Mr. Dominic Meagher will be returning as our music teacher from Term 2. First Week of Term 2 Term 2 commences on Monday 24th April and the children return to school on this day. Tuesday 25th is Anzac Day and it is a public holiday. Friday 28th April is a Staff Development Day and there will be no school for children on this day.

End of Term Thank you, to all staff, parents and community who have made my introduction to Prouille and happy and memorialble experience. This is a beautiful community and the children here are little people we are all very proud of. I hope all the staff and community have a safe but fun holiday and I am looking forward discovering what Term 2 will bring. Sneaky but Fun Ways to keep your Children During School Holidays Sure, it’s great to give the kids a break from the drudgery of school work over the holidays, but you don’t want them forgetting what they’ve learned. These fun ideas will keep their brains ticking over:

Get messy in the kitchen and bake- great for reading, following instructions short-term memory, recall and mathematics.

Build a worm Farm: They will learn about the environment and recycling and biodegradable products.

Pull out a deck of cards: good for number and pattern recognition.

Growing Minds App: great for 6-13 year olds as good for the memory, attention spans, as well as their smarts across key study areas of mathematics, English and science.

Have some tongue twisting time: great for a laugh but also helps with speech.

Fizzy Fun: here is a link to 91 different science experiments: http://www.kidspot.com.au/things-to-do/search?q=science+experiments

Take a day trip- this is a great way to discover the world

Teach them to Knit- fantastic for the fine motor skills and persistence.

Have a riddle of the day- fabulous brain therapy

Grow some food: get into the garden and plant and water your own veggies.

Play board games and complete puzzles as a family. Have a fabulous holiday and we will see you all back, Term 2

“Bee” a Missionary Disciple A very BIG THANK YOU to those who have been generously donating containers of honey to your child’s classrooms ready to be sent to the Asylum Seeker Centre Food Bank in Newtown this week! Some of our Mission Leaders collected the jars from classrooms and were astounded at the amount of jars you have so thoughtfully sent in.

Thanks to you, the families who would otherwise go without such items, will be able to enjoy some delicious honey!! We are so grateful for your sweet response Parent and Staff Prayer Thank you to those of you who attended our second ‘Parent and Staff Prayer’ on Wednesday 29th March (Week 9) at 8:20am.

We spent some time reflecting upon our Term and celebrating the small moments where we, in some way, have made a difference in someone’s else’s life. Viewing a TED Talk clip on Teaching proved to be a hit, whereby we acknowledged the imperative importance parents play as their child’s first teacher as well as the experience of teachers in schools. It was a beautiful time spent with parents and staff!

SRC representative group for term 1 – thank you A very special thank you goes out to all of our wonderful SRC class representatives for Term 1;

SRC representatives for Term 2 will be voted in, then acknowledged during Week 2’s Assembly.

Tuesday 4th April – Fr Joe visiting Kindy! As Kindy’s liturgical experience this term, Fr Joe will be visiting the children in their classrooms on Tuesday for a brief chat and some dedicated question time about life in the Church.
