Global and Societal Impacts With
Clean Water 1 out of 6 people live without adequate access to water
Lack of basic sanitation
No access to safe drinking water Political and economic barriers prevent access to water
Water contamination (by people or naturallyoccurring)

Sources for Clean Water Major source comes from ocean salty water
Only 3% comes from fresh water from snow and ice
Groundwater aquifers
Salty water is unusable prior of treatment
Depleting aquifers
Contaminated and polluted water

Desalination Technology Reverse Osmosis: Water pressure is used to force water
through a membrane to separate salt from water
Advantages: Greatly reduces salt content and inorganic content in water
Can purify more water than distillers (easier to operate andmaintain)
Do not use electricity
Disadvantages: Expensive to build
Limited to certain location
Depend on high water pressure for process to work

Distillation Units Distillation: Water is boiled in a compartment and
vaporized, leaving non volatile contaminants behind
Advantages:
Can produce highly pure water Removes heavy metals, nitrates, chlorides that carbon
filtration can not remove
Removes pathogens by killing them
Disadvantages: Takes time to purify the water
Require periodic cleaning of the units
Units are expensive since they require electricity to run

Drip Irrigation Method Drip Irrigation: Strategy used to reduce amount of
water used in agriculture
Agricultural takes up 80 % total worldwide used
Advantages:
More efficient use of water
Disadvantages:
Not enough water to cleanse the soil

New TechnologyAwaiting Patent referred as UV007
Breeches technology gaps in social classes
Uses UV-Light in Germinal wavelength to disinfect Human Powered, circumvents high costs of electricity
Great for areas for with water availability, but lack ofsafe water
Potential for larger operations; still cost effective

Solar Water Purifier (Desalination) Cheaper alternative to traditional desalination
No filters, electronics, no moving parts
No plastic taste, color, smellJust needs sun
