“Cousin” Lois (cousin to Hattie Kolar) is one the West girls, having lived there all her life. Cousin Lois was a Floor Manager at Ben Franklins’ store for 35 years before retirement. She has two daughters: one a nurse in Salado, and one a teacher at Reicher High School. These girls married cousins, both by the name of Volcek. Lois has three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. This is

truly a Czech family.Cousin Lois is adjusting well – she goes to exercise class and to mass daily and has joined in many other activities as well. Get acquainted with Cousin Lois – just look for Hattie and she’ll be nearby.

Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 15 -21. With that in mind, Providence Park will be having its annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, “No One Holds A Candle To You,” on Thursday, April 19.

The meal will be provided by our own Nutritional Services department beginning at 11:30 a.m. It will consist of a stuffed tomato with chicken salad, fresh fruit, special muffins, and cheesecake petit fours.

Jonathan Ford, Vice President for Workplace Spirituality and Leadership Formation at Providence will be our speaker for the luncheon. We will also be giving special recognition to several of our volunteers and be handing out door prizes as well. Ok volunteers, be watching for those invitations, they’re in the mail.

Annual Picnic in the ParkOn Monday April 30th we will be going on our annual “picnic in the park”. We will be leaving for Cameron Park around 10:00 a.m. and returning to the facility around 2:00 p.m. We will be at our usual pavilion which is very close to the bathrooms and right on the river so you can watch the ducks and the boats as they travel past. We also take games to play and there are plenty of tables for everyone to have a seat. We will be cooking hamburgers and hot dogs prepared for us on the grill by Dona and her staff. There will be plenty of chips, soda and dessert as well. So, sign up on the trip sheet at your activity desk and hop aboard for some good food, fun and fresh air.

New Friends at Providence ParkWelcome! Rosa GillespieApt. 2110

Rosa moved to Waco from Midwest City, OK, home of Tinker Air Force Base, where Rosa worked for 34 years as Inventory Manager. This was a very demanding andstressful job --having all the B-52 inventory parts available on all occasions, and especially when they had B-52 “fly-ins”.She has a blended family of five - three

boys and 2 girls. The son who lives in Waco is a retired high school principal.

Rosa likes to read, and play dominoes (not 42). She is Protestant and plans to worship on Sunday in the Chapel.

Please welcome our newest resident, Rosa Gillespie.

The “girls” of The Village and St. Elizabeth Place will be taking a trip to play bingo at Geneva Hall on Friday April 20th. The van will leave The Village at 6:00 p.m. and return around

Girls Night Out!10:00 p.m. The cost of the cards are $5.00 per set with 3 out of set games costing $1.00 each. There is always plenty of good food and refreshments made by the ladies of St. Joseph’s Catholic

Church in Bellmead as well. If you are a “girl” living in the Village or St. Elizabeth Place and you enjoy playing bingo, this is the trip for you…….

Christian Rudolph Ebsen, Jr. was born in Belleville, Illinois, on April 2, 1908. His father opened a dance studio in Florida when Buddy was ten years old and taught all of his children to dance. How-ever, the young man looked forward to a career as a doctor and entered the University of Florida in 1926 with this in mind. He was forced to leave college in 1928 because of financial difficulties. So, at the age of twenty, he left for New York City with $26.75 in his pocket with hope of finding work as a dancer.

Buddy went on tour as a dancer during World War II while enlisted in the Coast Guard. In the 1950’s he was cast as Fess Parker’s sidekick in “Davy Crocket.” In the 60’s The Beverly Hillbillies became a television sensation. It is estimated that 60 million people watched the show between 1962 and 1971, when it was cancelled.

Although, he was by this time, a multi-millionaire, in 1973 Ebsen took the role of Barnaby Jones. This show ran until 1980 when it was taken off the air so Buddy could retire.

He was married three times and had seven children in all. He enjoyed dancing, swimming, fishing, sailing, painting landscapes and writing. He published his autobiography and his first novel Kelly’s Quest, in 2001 at the age of 93.

Buddy Ebsen died on July 6, 2003 at the age of 95 in Torrance, California from complications from pneumonia. His body was cremated and his ashes scattered at sea.

Pass The Bomb! The numbers for “Pass the Bomb” are growing by leaps and bounds and on the second and fourth Tuesday of April at 1:30 p.m. in the Village Activity Room, you will find a group of people passing a little black bomb around like a hot potato.

Don’t be afraid, they are just trying to tax their brains by coming up with words (the longer the better) before that bomb blows up. Just ask Don Oliver or Charles Tolbert how taxing this game can be, they’re the experts. They can come with some of the strangest words that take an explanation after the round is over, (for some of us anyway).

Sharon draws a card with letters on it and you have to come up with words in the exact order of the letters on the card. They can be in

the front of the word, the middle, or the end.

Everyone should try it sometime, it’s harder than you think, especially if the person in front of you takes your word and you have to think of another one on the spur of the moment and words cannot be repeated during any round.

This is a green dollar activity so if you want to get some of those green dollars to spend at the next dollar store, this would be a good way to get it. Bring a friend and give it a try, you just might get a good laugh and have a little fun in the process. The more the merrier.

Anyone wishing to go, please sign up at the activity table, so we can get a good count of how many we have. Wish us luck!!!!!

Happy Birthday!Don Oliver April 8
