Dear Seniors,

The Warren Township Board and I instituted the Discount Taxi Ticket Program several years ago

to improve the transportation options for Warren Township senior and disabled residents. The

tickets are only to be used by the person who purchased them. The ride must begin or end in War-

ren Township. We have contacted the two taxi companies with whom we contract and reminded

them of these rules. Anyone caught selling the tickets or giving them to someone else will no long-

er be allowed to purchase them. This is a very popular service and we do not want any one person to put it

in jeopardy by abusing it.

We are frequently approached by home health agencies, assisted living developments, insurance agents, and

other for profit businesses if they can sponsor a luncheon or other program. They do this in order to have access to

our clients so that they can market their products to you. We listen to your wishes regarding this. You have repeat-

edly told us that you want the Senior Center to be a place where you do not have to be worried about someone tar-

geting you. We also do not want you to think that we are endorsing a particular business because we have allowed

them in the building. Please understand that we do this to protect you from this kind of unwanted contact. If you

are in need of any kind of service, please do not hesitate to contact the Senior Services department. They will guide

you toward reputable companies to assist you with housing, home health, insurance, or any of your other needs.

I often receive the request to eliminate the circle courtyard in front of the building and replace it with more

handicapped parking. This is not possible because many of our utility lines are buried under that courtyard. How-

ever, when the addition is completed next year, the entrance will be very close to the main parking lot, eliminating

much of the problem. Suzanne D. Simpson

Dear Members,

Our partnership with the Gurnee Park District for the Water Aerobics classes has been very successful. We

had a wait list for every class of the Winter session. That is why it is very important that those of you who register

actually attend the classes. We understand unexpected illnesses and emergencies. However , going forward,

at the end of each session when the Park District sends me the attendance sheets, I will be checking to see how many

classes you attended. If you attend less than half, you will be notified that you will need to skip a session before

signing up for another one. In addition, if you know that you will not be available to attend one or two of the clas-

ses in a session, we ask that you wait until the next session to register. As with our other session classes, we will

offer those on the wait lists the opportunity to register for the next session before the registration opens to everyone.

If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

We are changing the name of the Caregiver Support Group to Warren Township’s Support Group, BUT THE

GROUP WILL STILL BE MEETING HERE ON WEDNESDAYS. Family Services has a grant to provide

counseling to caregivers in Lake County. They have been providing a facilitator for the Caregiver Support Group

that meets at the Senior Center. Family Care has decided that they will no longer provide that facilitator and will be

starting a support group exclusively for active caregivers at another site. The Caregiver Support Group has always

been a shining example of how people with experience and knowledge can share those things with someone new to

the experience. I particularly want to voice my thanks to Royce Branning who always has a smile and has so kindly

welcomed new members into the group for over sixteen years. I also want to thank Susan Bergquist for her indefati-

gable baking of delicious treats every week. I look forward to still seeing you all on Wednesdays. Joanne Adams

Marquerite Mishkin was a hidden child of the Holocaust. Her mother had approached the Belgian Resistance for

Roosevelt University and became a teacher.

On Friday, March 23rd from 1:30 to 3:00 PM, Marguerite Mishkin will share her journey from the 1940s in Bel-

HIGH SCHOOL DINNER AND PLAY

The night you’ve all been waiting for! A show and dinner for only $10.00! This year we’re invited to the dress re-

hearsal of “Catch Me If You Can” on Wednesday, April 18th. The play is the high-flying musical comedy about

chasing your dreams and not getting caught. Seeking fame and fortune, precocious teenager, Frank Abignale, Jr.,

runs away from home to begin an unforgettable adventure. With nothing more than his boyish charm, a big imagi-

nation, and millions of dollars in forged checks, Frank successfully poses as a pilot, doctor, and lawyer - living the

high life and winning the girl of his dreams. When Frank’s lies catch the attention of FBI agent Carl Hanratty,

though, Carl pursues Frank across the country to make him pay for his crimes.

The play begins at 4:00 PM. Dinner will follow immediately after. The menu will be: Strawberry/Spinach

Salad with balsamic dressing, herb roasted pork loin, vegetable, roasted red potatoes, dinner roll with butter. Des-

sert will be an Ice Cream Sundae. Beverage choices are coffee, water, & lemonade.

The play will be held at Warren Township High School’s O’Plaine campus. You can drive yourself or sign up to

travel with us on the Township buses. The first day to register is Tuesday, March 27th and the LAST is Wednes-

day, April 12th. Cost is $10.00 for the dinner. The play is free. The buses will leave the Center at 3:30 and

return around 7:00. If you are driving yourself, it is best to park in the parking lot on the North end

so that after dinner it is a short walk from the cafeteria to your car. If driving yourself, please do not

arrive before 3:50 to prevent congestion as the students and buses are leaving the parking lots.

**If you only want to attend the play and not go to dinner, you do not have to sign up at the Center.**

OLD WORLD WISCONSIN

We are hoping for good weather for this re-schedule of our motor coach trip to Old World Wisconsin in Eagle,

Wisconsin. Journey back to the 1880s at Old World Wisconsin. It is a vivid re-creation of the working farm-

steads and settlements established by European immigrants in America’s heartland. You will see teams of oxen

and horses working the fields, hearty meals being prepared over wood burning stoves, and the heirloom plants in

well tended gardens. You can chat with the town blacksmith or the keeper of the general store.

Friday, June 1st. Motor coach leaves the Center at 9:00 AM and returns around 4:45 PM.

Lunch is on your own. The Clausing Barn Café offers burgers, bratwurst, and chicken sandwiches plus

salads and drinks. They also have bakery goods and ice cream.

Join this FREE class taught by experienced Folk Dance instructor, Sylvia Chang, Monday afternoons from 1:30

until 2:30. A new dance is taught each week so, new people are always welcome. Join the fun at any point.

Register anytime. For fun, exercise, and camarader ie join the group to learn easy dances from Greece, Is-

rael, France, Russia, Brazil, and other countries. No experience necessary. Sylvia promises that if you can count to

seven and know your left from your right, you can learn these dances. Come and join the fun.

Reminder: Only the person purchasing the half-price taxi tickets from Warren Township and their spouse

are allowed to use the tickets. Anyone found to be selling the tickets or giving them to someone else will no

longer be allowed to purchase tickets.

If you have ANY problems with any of the cab companies, please call Joanne Adams at 847-244-1101 ext. *503. It

is most helpful to have the cab number and date of travel when reporting a problem with a particular cab driver or

dispatcher. American Taxi and Gurnee Red & Black Flash Cab accept our tickets.

Please remember if you are calling the companies to ask if they serve a particular area, you must say you have the

Warren Township tickets - not the name of the town where you live. It is confusing when you say the town because

Warren Township is made up of Gurnee plus parts of six other towns. Just say you’re from Warren Township.

If you want to travel to Rosemont for a show, the taxi service is complicated because the City of Rosemont will on-

ly allow cab companies licensed by them to pick up at the theater. Special arrangements have to be made with the

taxi company. Please call Joanne Adams, if you have questions. Also, if traveling to Mitchell Field, check with the

cab company to make sure they can pick you back up there.

If you have never used the taxi program, everyone in our office can answer your questions. If you need one of our

Senior Guides, we are happy to get you one. It has a full explanation of the program you can keep with you.

On Thursdays from 1:00-3:00, line dance class is the place to be. We have the fabulous line dance instruc-

tor, Dan Pye. No sign-up necessary. Learn an entire dance and dance it every class. You pay $5.00 each time

IRS, TAXES, & E-MAILS

As tax season approaches, please be aware of possible scams involving information about your taxes and returns,

especially over the internet and through e-mail. Whenever you receive an e-mail regarding your taxes or W2s from

anyone, regardless of whether you recognize them or not, call to verify with the individual to ensure that they actu-

ally sent the email. If you do choose to send information via email, rather than selecting “reply” make sure the

email addresses are correct and manually type said address into the “To” field directly. This is one of many ways

scammers get access to your personal information. These are becoming more prevalent in regards to your taxes. To

read more on different tax scams to be aware of, visit this link: https://www.irs.gov/uac/tax-scams-consumer-alerts.

We want to tell those of you who still need to file for income taxes about two options for free assistance.

1. AARP volunteers provide free tax assistance at the Warren Newport Library on Mondays and Fridays. See

details under Library Services on Page 14.

2. United Way has partnered with H & R Block to help people easily and accurately file both their federal and

state taxes through www.myfreetaxes.com. For those of you making $66,000.00 or less this online product is

free through your computer, tablet or smart phone. There are also IRS-certified specialists available to answer

any of your questions.

Senior Citizen Assessment and Homestead Exemption

The Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption is a property tax program administered by the Chief

County Assessment office in Waukegan for Lake County home owners age 65 and older. It is a common miscon-

ception that registering for this program will freeze the amount of taxes charged. Instead, what it does is freeze the

assessed value of your home at the amount that was determined the first year you apply. Your taxes will still go up

when there are tax increases but, you are always taxed at the initial amount even if the value of your home increas-

es. For instance, if the first year you qualified, your home was valued at $200,000.00 but now your home is worth

$300,000.00, your taxes will still be based on the $200,000.00 amount. In order to qualify for this benefit, your

total household income must be $55,000 or less.

If you have registered for this program in previous years, the forms will be mailed to you by the Chief Assessment

Office of Lake County. If you have never applied and wish to do so, you must first sign-up for the Senior Home-

stead Exemption. This is an exemption available to any Warren Township property owner aged 65 and over. You

sign up for that on our campus in the Township Assessor’s Office. After you have registered for the Senior Home-

stead Exemption, you may complete the Tax Freeze application. You can get an application from the Senior Center

or call the Chief County Assessment office at 847-377-2050 to request one. They should be available sometime in

March. You can also make an appointment with Sherie Palmer, Carly Jastrzemski or myself and we can assist you

in completing the form and notarizing it. Please call to schedule an appointment. If you are uncertain whether you

qualify, want an application, or have other questions, you can call me, Jamaal Malone, at 847-244-1101 ext. *513.

You can also contact the Warren Township Assessor’s Office directly at 847-244-1101 ext. *201

Please be sure to REGISTER EARLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINMENTS IF PROGRAMS FILL.

Registration dates on the calendar are the first day that registration for a program or event is open. For your

convenience you may register by phone or in person at the Senior Center. Helpful hint: If you prefer to call

in to register and get our voicemail, please continue to call back until you reach a staff member to avoid dis-

appointment if the event fills. Voicemails are not checked until we are no longer busy. Remember to dial *

(star) before the extension you are dialing to call us directly.

Payments must be made within one week of the registration date. After the fir st day registration is

open, your payment will be due sooner. Payment may be due immediately if it is nearing the date of the pro-

gram or trip. Checks made payable to Warren Township OR cash are accepted. Please remember that we

are unable to accept fifty or hundred dollar bills for payment for any program.

YOU MAY ONLY REGISTER, PAY FOR AN EVENT, OR BUY TAXI TICKETS DURING OUR REGULAR

BUSINESS HOURS.

You may register yourself and ONLY one other senior.

RETURNED CHECK CHARGE: Any check that is deposited and returned by the bank for any rea-

son will result in an additional $17.00 charge and a replacement check will be due immediately.

Accident Procedures: When someone falls, especially if they are outside or bleeding, your first impulse is to

help them. We ask that you inform a staff member right away so that we can get help. We have all been

trained in First Aid & CPR and have strict procedures we need to follow—especially when blood is involved.

Library Users: Please be courteous to others by taking phone calls in the hall and using headphones for vid-

eos. Thank you for your cooperation.

A medical emergency card is required to be on file here at the Senior Center for all participants. Please up-

date any changes immediately.

All Trips (except ala car tes) will require you to bring your Warren Township ID worn as your name tag. A

lanyard will be provided the day of the trip.

Registration fees must be paid in full one week prior to the trip or on the last registration date—whichever

comes first.

For trips that begin or end before our normal working hours of 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on weekdays and

any trips that occur on the weekends, please schedule your pick-up before you arrive for the trip. We

cannot wait for a PACE bus or cab to be called and arrive after we return.

Our trips are offered to Warren Township Seniors; if you want to bring a friend who is not a Warren Resident

we will add them to the non-resident waiting list. If the trip does not fill with Warren Seniors by a week be-

fore the trip (and we have enough interest to run the trip), we will invite the people on the non-resident list.

Please arrive EARLY for trips (20 minutes prior to departure time). We will leave promptly at the posted

departure time.

Program/Trip credits will be given in full for programs or trips cancelled by the Senior Center.

Refunds cannot be given for programs/trips that require advance admission purchase, entrance fees or meal

orders unless we are able to fill your spot with someone from our wait list.

If you cannot make a program or trip you have registered for, please let us know as soon as possible. We of-

fer your spot to the first senior on the wait list. Do NOT give your spot to a friend or send a friend in your

place. That defeats the purpose of a wait list.

Caregiver policy: Due to the intensive nature of supervising tr ips, Warren Township staff, Tour Com-

pany staff or a motor coach driver cannot provide special individual assistance to individuals with special

needs for walking, dining or other routine activities. We strongly recommend that travelers who require as-

sistance, be accompanied by a companion who is capable of and totally responsible for providing assistance.

Warren Township, in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, requests that those with disabili-

ties who require certain accommodations to allow them to participate in the Senior Center overnight/day trips

or have questions about the accessibility of the overnight/day trips contact the ADA coordinator to allow the

Township to make reasonable accommodations for those persons. Warren Township Senior Services re-

serves the right to deny travel if it is determined that caregiving of this nature is required and a care-

giver is unable to attend.

Trip Etiquette: Please respect your tr ip coordinator , bus dr iver , dining staff, theatre/venue staff, and

your fellow travelers. Please arrive back at the bus or designated area at the time and place assigned by the

trip coordinator. Unacceptable behavior such as rudeness to your trip coordinator, fellow travelers, or venue

staff will not be tolerated and will be reported to the Senior Center Director who will assess whether or not

the individual may attend future trips.

Please be sure to REGISTER EARLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINMENTS IF TRIPS FILL.
