    The ceramic museums, which

    demonstrate one of the provinces

    most important assets, deserve special

    mention. Ceramic production has been

present in these lands since ancient

times, and is in modern times a vital

    economic driving force.

In order to understand and admire the

rich ceramic history of Castelln, weshould visit not only the Castelln Fine

Arts Museum but also the LAlcora

Ceramics Museum, the Museum of the

    Barona de Ribesalbes and theManolo

    SafontCeramic Museum of in Onda.

These museums show us the works of

    the provinces ceramic artisans, and

if we want to see how modern-day

artisans work we can also visit the

    workshops in existence today.

In addition to the province of Castellns

    significant ceramic craftsmanship,

in these lands we can find others

which have also been passed on from

generation to generation, such as the

textile craftwork of the Maestrazgo areaand Els Ports de Morella, or the walking

    stick manufacturers in Segorbe.

    Alongside this historical backdrop,

whose roots are buried in bygone

times, the province of Castelln of the

present-day plays host to an abundance

of art and contemporary culture trends.

Museums and art galleries in which the

most up-to-date artistic trends can be

    observed are spread throughout the

    province, of which the Contemporary

Art Museum of Vilafams and the

    Espai dArt Contemporani (Space of

    A FESTIVALOF FIESTAS

The province of Castellns annual calendar includes a wide and varied program of festivals inwhich tradition and fun become intermingled.

En January, San Antonio Abad celebrations are common in every town of Castelln. In the county of Els Ports, the Santantonada

of Forcall is remarkable, whilst fire becomes especially spectacular in the town of Vilanova dAlcolea. In February, the celebration of

Carnival stands out, and is particularly striking in Vinars.

Thefiestas in the capital city and the third Sunday of Lent coincide, normally in March. During the week ofFestes de la Magdalena, the

city of Castelln experiences a great number of events and festivities that are noticeably popular. One of the most attractive elements

of the Festes de la Magdalena is that Castelln plays host to the first bullfighting festival of the year.

    23

Around the 19th March, on St Josephs Day,some towns in the province celebrate the

Fiestas de las Fallas. Burriana was the pioneer

but, a few years ago, other towns like Benicarl

and La Vall dUix joined this tradition.

The province celebrates the arrival of Holy

Week with popular performances of the

Passion, amongst which the towns Borriol,

Torreblanca and Chilches are of particular

    note. Solemn processions with beautiful

floats and deeply rooted traditions (Vila-real,

    Vinars, etc.) are carried out.

In May, the explosion of spring brings with it

a large number of rogations and pilgrimages

to several sanctuaries and hermitages in

the province (Els Pelegrins in les Useres,

the procession from Cat to Sant Pere de

Castellfort, the Vallivana Rogation, Virgen de

    la Cueva Santa celebrations, etc.).

In Morella, the Corpus Christi feast possesses a

truly unique character. The traditional Gigantes

y Cabezudos (people wearing large head masks,

and often tall costumes), biblical characters

and typical dances reminiscent of medieval

times parade along the main streets, forming an

    incomparable show.

In June, thefiestas of San Juan and San Pedro,

of which the most prominent can be found in

Vinars and el Grau of Castelln, are widely

celebrated in our province. The San Juanfiestas

are crammed with festivities of pagan origin.

Swimming in the sea at midnight and dancing

around bonfires are common traditions alongthe coast of Castelln.

    A

    FESTIVAL

    OF

    FIESTAS

When August comes, so do thefiestas in most towns of the province. Normally, they are dedicated to the Virgin of August

and San Roque. Along with them comes the hustle and bustle of towns whose inhabitants lead a peaceful lifestyle for the

    rest of the year.

On the subject of noteworthyfiestas, we should point out Sexenni de Morella, so called because it is held every six years in

honour to the Virgin of Vallivana.

    This itinerary of popular fiestas

    continues into the months of

    September and October throughout

    the entire province.

    In September, it is worth

    mentioning thefiestas celebrated in

Zorita (county of Els Ports), which

    take place in the incomparable

    Virgen de la Balma Sanctuary.

In Pescola, we must point out

the traditional Fiesta de Moros y

    Cristianos (Moors and Christians

Festival), which is also of Medieval

    origin and has the impressive

Castillo del Papa Luna (Castle of

Pope Benedict XIII) as its ideal

setting. The fiesta of Segorbe is

also notable due to the Entrada de

Toros y Caballos (Bull and Horse

Droving), that has been declared of

    International Tourist Interest.

Bulls are the common factor of the fiestas celebrated here

throughout the year. Castelln is the province where the largest

number of bulls is displayed annually. The typical bullfightis present in our towns, especially in Castelln, Vilafranca,

Vinars and Benassal, but the most widely spread tradition

is the toro de calle (bull in the street), which is bought by

bullfight clubs, folk clubs and festival committees. Together

with the bullfight, a series of related ceremonies, such as the

desencajonamiento (releasing of the bull), la prueba (the test)

and toro encerrado (trapped bull) are particularly spectacular.

At night, grooms make lamed and swaying movements in front

of the toro embolado (a bull with fireballs on its horns) to avoid

    being charged at.

To sum up, they are the ultimate popularfiestas and are often

unique because of a conception and a singularity that add

appeal for the visitor to the province of Castelln.

All these traditional events, together with a series of cultural

and festive shows organised either by private or public bodies,

also take place throughout the year.

The International Festival of Benicssim (FIB), The Rototom

Sunsplash also in Benicssim, The Arenal Sound festival

in Burriana, The Festival of Ancient and Baroque Music of

Pescola, the International Festival of Street Theatre of Vila-

real, The Leisure and Culture Fair of Moncofa (FOC) or The

International Music Festival of Oropesa del Mar (ORFIM)

are events that gather a large number of people and are only

a sample of the countless activities held in the province of

Castelln. We are sure that you will always find an event that

meets your preferences, allowing you to enjoy an unforgettable

Many beaches in Castelln are certified Blue Flagbeaches, they are accessible for handicapped people, they offer all amenities, leisureareas on the sand and in the sea, professional instructors, sea libraries where people can read for free, and childrens entertainment

including shows and programmed activities. At night, the visitor will enjoy watching a good film under the stars and on the sand of the

beach. Finally, on special festivities, there are Havaneras festivals, popular music or fireworks. We recommend our visitors to spend St.

Johns Eve at one of the beaches in Castelln, as they will experience the pure Mediterranean atmosphere: outdoor supper by the sea,

bonfires, street bands and fireworks, music

Next to the beaches are the impeccable seafronts of Castellns coastline, where the visitor can go for long and nice walks, bike rides

along the cycleway or skating. Another option is to watch the sunset by the Mediterranean Sea from one of the leisure areas, picnic

areas and outdoor bars on the beach.

Castelln has 120 km of coastline which is home to countless beaches with fine sand and gradualslope, bathed by the calm water of the Mediterranean Sea. Here you will enjoy long days with your

The marinas in Castelln are another choice of family tourism, as they offer nautical activities for children: ship naming andlaunching, sailing or canoeing for beginners and accessing the world of scuba-diving for those who have the appropriate age.

The Columbretes Islands Sea Reserve, formed by volcanoes, is an incomparable place to go scuba-diving thanks to the cleanliness of the

water. If the visitor does not have the opportunity to practice this great sport, a trip to the isles is one way of getting to know nature

in its purest form. Excursions on a ship along the coastline of Castelln are also available. A trip on the so-called golondrinas to get

By choosing the inland of Castelln you will discover amazinglandscapes and unique towns, mainly small. You can enjoy

a safe and relaxed stroll there along their streets, as very few

motor vehicles travel through them. You will be able to discover

monuments such as churches and old castles, as well as the rich

traditional architecture these sites are bestowed with.

Inland towns and villages are framed by appealing beautyspots (Castelln province boasts nine natural parks) and over

1,000 km of footpaths, along which your family will be able to

enjoy nature between riverside forests, pine trees, holm oaks

or mediterranean groves where thousand-year-old olive trees

stand out as part of the provinces pride and joy.

Furthermore, the province is home of two greenways; Va

Verde Ojos Negros stretches across the Alto Palancia regionamong inland villages and Va Verde de Benicssim - Oropesa

del Mar will reveal unexplored maritime landscapes of the

Mediterranean coast. Both are fairly easy trails which can be

covered on foot, by bicycle or horse.

Another amusement area found in the inland of the province is

Saltapins Adventure Park, which you will find in the forest near

the town of Morella. There you will have the chance to slide onwires, cross suspension bridges and footbridges, etc. There are

several companies, whose professional teams will be available

in order for you to carry out adventure activities, such as down-

climbing, canoeing, covering vias ferratas in total safety. All of

these are options for enjoying nature and adventure.

The earths interior is open to you in the caves of Sant Josep,

subterranean river in Europe will reveal the wonders hiddenby nature.

In a visit to La Valltorta Natural Park you will be able to admire

rock paintings listed as a natural heritage site. The visitors

to get to know the various activities you can enjoy here with

your family, which are complemented with a wide offer of

accommodation for family tourism; hotels (most of them

boasting leisure activities for children), camping sites, holiday

    GASTRONOMIC FUSION

Although typical dishes of the coastal or inland regions do exist, the two cuisines

of the Province of Castelln are fused together to create unique flavours for the palate,

whilst always formulated with the same healthy elements of the Mediterranean diet.

In Castelln, fruit and vegetables are in abundance, as are excellent olive oils, fish,

seafood, and, of course, outstanding lamb and pork. In addition to these basicingredients in Castelln cooking, the province is rich in one of the most prized

delicacies: the truffle, which will add flavour to a multitude of dishes, much to the

delight of the choosiest of connoisseurs.

Other elements fused together in the varied menu of this Mediterranean cuisine are

game, field mushrooms, award-winning cheeses (Benassal, Cat, Almedjar) and

cured products like Serrano ham or cecina (calf or goat leg, cured in the mountain air)

both of which are true delicacies of the region.

Fish and seafood deserve our attentionwhen sitting at a table in the province. If the

king prawns of Vinars enjoy international

repute, an extensive variety offrutos del

mar (seafood) meet the same standard.

Sea snails, date mussels, mantis shrimps,

cuttlefish, gilt-head bream, sea bass, red

mullet, and the humble anchovy or sardine,

recently caught by the Castelln fleet and

made according to tried and tested recipes

by local chefs, have a unique flavour not-

    to-be-missed.

Good seafood paella, the typical suquet

    de peix, arrs a banda (rice with fish);

fideu (noodle paella) and fish or seafoodstews, are regional dishes which reach

high standards of quality and flavour in

    Castelln.

    32

Some of the abovementioned dishes haverice as one of the key ingredients, and it is

rice which rules in one of the main dishes

of Castelln cuisine: Paella. There are a

thousand-and-one ways to prepare this dish(almost everyone in Castelln has their own

    recipe) which, when cooked (preferably)

on the wood of an orange tree, excels in

taste and flavour. However, in all of them

(apart from those made exclusively from

    seafood) vegetables, meat (chicken and

rabbit mainly) and rice are brought together

to form one of the most well-known dishesof Mediterranean cuisine.

But there are also countless rice-based

recipes in Castelln: oven-baked rice; arrs

en costra (paella rice with sausages and

covered with an omelette); arrossejat (pan-

fried rice); broth, etc. are typical dishes both

from the coast and inland, and in each areathey have their own characteristic touches.

The smells of the sea and the orchards

of the coast morph bit by bit into a more

substantial cuisine in inland Castelln, a

    change favoured by the climate.

Inland Castelln also boasts a simple

cuisine based on natural products which are

transformed into rich stews and broths or

game dishes, all accompanied by excellent

olive oil, a variety of field mushrooms and

truffles or perfumed with aromatic herbs.

The tasty lamb and pork products deserve

separate mention. The former has a unique

regional flavour as a result of the pastures

rich in aromatic herbs (thyme, rosemary,

etc.) in which it is bred, and which we can

savour in the simple grilled chops as well as

in the elaborate truffle-filled suckling lamb;and of the latter, which is surrounded by a

series of cultural traditions, our cuisine uses

every part. We draw your attention to the

tasty cold meats and preserves (which come

about as a result of the traditional matanza

(slaughtering season) and used to provide

food during the harsh winter days) and,

above all, the regions exquisite mountain-cured ham, which is produced with great

    care and patience.

If the strong dishes of Castelln cuisine

are notable, the confectionary rooted in

ancient traditions, many of Arabic origin,

is second to none. This is reflected in good

torrons (nougat), almendrados (almondmacaroons), rossegons (diamond-shaped

    almond biscuits), coques (cakes with

    countless recipes and varieties: celestial,

malfeta, de castell, etc.), coll (curd

cheese), pastissets de cabello de ngel or

pastissets de boniato (cakes of pastry with

pumpkin and sugar or sweet potato), etc.

To enjoy these dishes to the full, they should

be accompanied with the best regional

wines, a good example of which are the

    ones stamped with Geographical Indication

Vins de les Terres de Castell.

Under this stamp we can find white, ros and red wines, as well as sweet muscatels, which can be happily brought together with any

tasty recipe of Castelln cuisine. This enormous gastronomic array, which we have hardly been able to do justice here, given that each

town and chef prepares the dishes with a personal touch, can be found in the province of Castelln. Numerous restaurants work every

day to maintain this heritage, renovate it and bring it up-to-date to suit modern palates, and gladly serve it up to any traveller wishing

to test their cooking skills, safe in the knowledge that they will always find excellent value for money which will doubtless make them

want to return to the gastronomic paradise so proudly laid claim to by the province of Castelln.

The Nautical Station of Benicarl Pescola,

the marinas of Vinars, Alcossebre, Oropesa del

Mar, Castelln de la Plana or Burriana are pointsof reference for lovers of nautical sports. There,

apart from the berths and the typical services

offered by marinas, we can find other possibilities

like trips along the coast, sports vessels rentals,

sailing courses, canoeing or scuba diving, etc.

Whether you have prior experience of water

sports or whether you want to start from scratch,

Castelln is the best way to experience a sea of

    Mediterranean sensations.

If you dont regularly practise these sporting

activities but you want to watch them, you will

also find many opportunities in Castelln to

experience them first-hand, as the diary of events

is very full. In June, the Regata Castelln Costa

Azahar yacht race is of great interest and takes

place in the waters of el Grao de Castelln.

In addition to sailing sports, the Mediterranean

waters of Castelln are also excellent for

practising sport fishing or the abovementioned

scuba diving, of which the best example can be

    found on the Columbretes Islands.

Yet, if you want to enjoy the Mediterranean Sea

in a different way, in lots of places on the beaches

of Castelln you have the opportunity to rent jet

skis or other kinds of vessels to spend enjoyable

and unforgettable moments in the province of

    OUTDOOR ACTIVITIESADVENTURE, HEALTH, COMPETITION, FUN

The province of Castelln unites sea and mountains. We may have mentioned the possibility ofwater sports, but this region, because of its varied geography and its benign climate, is the perfect

place to do all sorts of outdoor activities and make contact with nature.

As well as hiking along old paths and trails, we can go cycling or mountain bike-riding, climbing, canoeing or white-water canoeing, archery, paint-balling, canyoning, caving, etc.

These sporting activities can be carried out either through personal arrangements or by consultation with outdoor activity centres,

which can be found throughout the province. It should be pointed out that, whilst most of these sporting activities are suitable for

people of any age and physical condition, it is always better to experience them in the capable hands of professionals. Such people are

accustomed to these activities through daily experience, and are able to facilitate a means to go about them. These activities are very

enjoyable as they allow us to remain in constant contact with nature.

Golf is another sport greatly favoured by Castelln. Thanks to the 300 or more days of sun a year and the fields available, this sport

can be enjoyed all year round and the inconveniences of climate will never be an obstacle to improving your handicap, or starting out

as a novice golfer, using facilities which offer the services every golfer needs.

Sergio Garca is the great reality of golf in the province of Castelln and the celebration of the Castell Masters (tournament of the

European PGA Circuit), held in October, is the most important date in the full diary of competitions held throughout the year. If you

are a fan of golf, Castelln is a magnificent destination.

    HEALTH-IMPROVING WATERS

Castellns hot springs are composed of the spas of Montanejos and Villavieja, both situated inland, where their presence has

an invigorating effect on the local hotel industry, whilst at the same time spurring on the promotion of complementary tourism.

Montanejos is currently working to market itself as a Hot Spring Town and increase the tourist attractions in the area.

There are also springs in the province which have water with health-improving properties. Such is the case with the Font dEn

Segures in Besassal where the Valencian Bourgeoisie once went in search of cures for kidney infections. A similar case is in LAvell

Spa in Cat or that of Navajas in the Alto Palancia district. Both in Benassal and in Navajas there are plans to build spas with modern

    installations.

New habits and new tourist destinations often bring with them better contact with nature, with environments associated with healthy living. The therapeutic use both of hot springs

and of sea water is starting to be valued again, and a large part of society is willing and able

    to use this natural resource.

The spring waters of LAvell in Cat and Fuente en Segures in Benassal are commercialised, as are the mineral medicinal springs of

Cortes de Arenoso, Bejs, Artana, Almedijar, Azubar and Chvar. The county council is currently working to commercialise them

under the same label Aguas Minerales de Castelln.

In addition, there are other types of establishments in the coastal areas and inland of the province which complement the activities of

the aforementioned spas, like thalassotherapy, fitness, health and beauty centres and hotels with spa, as well as other establishments

which offer services for holidays where health and body care and relaxation are the order of the day.

Among other establishments within the Marine Hot Spring category, El Palasiet in Benicssim and the Balneario de Marina DOr in

Oropesa del Mar are particularly notable.

As well as the marketing of these spas and springs, the province of Castelln boasts many fountains and springs of mineral medicinalwater, many of which are located in areas of outstanding natural beauty. A visit to these places will allow us to find ourselves among

    nature in all its splendour.
