From Cape Cod to the Monterey Peninsula, from the Rocky Mountains tothe Adirondacks, we’re celebrating gorgeous, welcoming communities. At Budget Travel, we are all about discovering affordable destinations that go far beyond the obviousvacation choices. Over the past fourteen years, a passionate and accomplished team of editors, writers, andphotographers have had a blast bringing you a different kind of travel experience: The Coolest Small Townsin America. What makes a small town “cool”? We believe that it’s cool to reflect the principles upon which the UnitedStates was founded, including cultural and ethnic diversity, the free exchange of creative ideas, and anentrepreneurial spirit that lifts all citizens in a community. We believe it’s cool to welcome and celebrate adiversity of visitors, the way Provincetown, Massachusetts, has been welcoming LGBTQ+ travelers fordecades. We believe it’s cool to live in harmony with nature, the way Pacific Grove, California, becameButterfly Town USA and Saranac Lake, New York, and its neighboring towns in Adirondack State Park havepursued a sustainable tourism industry that respects the region’s pristine lakes and mountains. We believeit’s cool to boast a vibrant downtown, cutting-edge cuisine, and a community spirit that makes visitors feellike friends, as all the towns on this year’s list do.Here, Budget Travel’s 14th annual 10 Coolest Small Towns in America, an editor-curated to-do list for 2019and beyond.

"Little in Common: 2 Artists, 1 Show, All Beauty" is just that, a show of two dissimilar artists withquality and visual beauty as their only commonality. This special show features Marilene Sawaf andMichael Palmer, two mature artists with very distinct styles showcasing differing subject matter. "We made no effort to tie these two together with a theme. Their work is too individual, and eachdeserves a stand-alone show," Curator Steve Bowersock. "Space and timing don't allow for it, sothey now each have a separate show - together. Two outstanding artists side by side, who shareonly the incredible quality and commitment of painters who have honed their craft and voice fordecades."

THE MODERN MALESOPENS JULY 5TH, THROUGH JULY 23rd

Over the centuries he's cut an imposing even ridiculous figure, donnedflowing gowns, ballooned breeches, Zoot suits, tuxedos, kilts and designer

farmer jeans. Long hair, bowl cuts, buzz cuts, mullets and man-buns, have been recycled with a decade's twist throughthe centuries. Beards, mustaches, sideburns and the clean cut look have all taken their turns. The decade's silhouette often presents like a uniform, along with the time's cultural view of masculinity, and the sexualnorm. Today things are looser, both in how we dress and what constitutes a man's role, his sexuality, and how hepresents and carries himself in the public sphere.

So, who is this contemporary man? What does he look like? Does he cling to the past, move with the latest trend orembracing a truer self. Is he one of the "buds" in a multiple ethnicity group, a practice once frowned upon; an at-homedad; Wall-street Shark; body builder; transgender, or drag queen?"So, we're excited about this show, an exhibition that takes stock of the contemporary man in all his guises, as seen bythe individual artist from all walks of life."

Exhibit Jurors are Realist Academy of Boston Assistant Director Julie Beck, and Bowersock.Invitational artists include a few of Bowersock's top painters including Darlou Gams and Jayne Adams. All exhibit isopen to all art forms."This exhibit feels part mystery and part celebration. First the mystery: what each submission might unfold - how do wesee this changing landscape," he says. "And of course the celebration of the male, in all his faces, transitions andessences."

“The Language of Sculpture -Spirit of Mayflower.” Carter’sjourney in the U.S. will end in Provincetown where she willbe an Artist-in-Residence at the Pilgrim Monument andProvincetown Museum (PMPM) August 11th through 25th. During her 13-day voyage on a freighter, she will be cut offfrom the outside world and will be charting her journeythrough a texture diary where she will spend time knotting, stitching and twisting twines and ropes while readingexcerpts of William Bradford’s journals he wrote abouthis Mayflowercrossing in 1620. She will also be usingancient weaving methods of macramé to weave newpatterns that are inspired by the Wampum belts of theWampanoag indigenous people. PMPM Executive Director Dr. K. David Weidner, said thatthis is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Museum andits visitors. “Rachel Carter’s Artist-in-Residency is uniquebecause it’s a cross-cultural exchange and also anopportunity for visitors to see history in the making. Rachel’stextile sculpture and expression of her own pilgrimage is animportant part of our programming connected to the400th anniversary of the Mayflower Pilgrims’ first landing inProvincetown,”

weavings she will have made on her journey in addition toweavings made with 50 women from the Pilgrim roots areaof the U.K. The 3D sculpture will be used to cast a bronzestatue depicting Pilgrim Women to be exhibited throughoutthe U.K. during the 400thanniversary ofthe Mayflower Pilgrims’ voyage to America. The PilgrimWomen sculpture will also feature a woman holding anapple, the Pilgrim 400 apple, a special species being grownin the U.K. for the anniversary and which will also be plantedin Provincetown.Carter’s project was inspired by research into her own familyhistory that she can trace to the 1500’s in the Midlands of theU.K. from where several Mayflower Pilgrims were from. Shesaid that her family never moved from that region and wereilliterate but could weave complex items as frame workknitters. She relates her family’s roots as weavers with thenative Wampanoag people who created weavings thatchronicled their milestones and historic events, two distinctgroups with no obvious connection but who were similarlyexperienced in story telling through textiles. When Carter is in her Artist-in-Residence at the PMPM, shewill display the textile art she made on the freighter voyageand talk to Museum visitors about her project. She will alsoprovide Museum visitors with the opportunity to learn how toweave.
