PROVINCIAL MEDICAL SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS HAVING SPECIAL CLASSES AND FACILITIES FOR CLINICAL STUDY.1 THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM (FACULTY OF MEDICINE).-An Ingleby Scholarship is annually awarded to the candidate obtaining highest marks in Obstetric Medicine and Surgery and Diseases of Women and Children at the final M.B. examination. One or more Sydenham Scholarships are offered annually of the value of 40 guineas each. The orphan sons of former students of the Birmingham Medical School have priority of election. No Sydenham scholars are elected whose age exceeds 23 years on the day of election. The Scholar- ships are held for three years, subject to good be- haviour. A Sands Cox Scholarship is offered annually of the value of 40 guineas. It may be held for three years, one-third being paid each year, subject to good behaviour. Qaeen’s Scholarships of the value of £10 10s. are awarded at the end of the University examinations. The Russell Memorial Prize is awarded annually after examination in Nervous Diseases. There are Faculties of Arts, Science, and Medicine. The medical courses qualify for the diplomas of all Licensing Bodies and for the degrees in Medicine and Surgery of British Universities. The Dental School, in conjunction with the General, Qaeen’s, and Dental Hospitals, affords a complete curriculum for all Dental diplomas. The Library contains upwards of 25,000 volumes. Syllabuses containing full information as to the various courses of instruction, lecture days and hours, fees, scholarships, &c., will be forwarded on application to the Dean of the Medical Faculty. THN GENERAL AND QUEEN’S HOSPITALS, BIRMINGHAM.- The practices of these hospitals are amalgamated for the purpose of Clinical Instruction under the direction of the Birmingham Clinical Board by whom all schedules will be signed and all examinations conduced. Assistant Ophthalmic Surgeon: Mr. Wilfred Allport. - UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, BRISTOL (FACULTY OF MEDICINE). -It is now arranged that Students of the College shall be admitted to the Clinical Practice of the Bristol Royal Infirmary and the Bristol General Hospital conjointly and consequently both these institutions are open to all Students. The Infirmary and the Hospital comprise between them a total of 470 beds ; and both have very extensive out-patient departments, special departments for the Diseases of Women and Children, and of the Eye, Ear, and Throat, besides large outdoor Maternity Departments and Dental Departments. Students may also attend the practice of the Bristol Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Women, containing 104 beds, and that of the Bristol Eye Hospital, with 28 beds. The total number of beds available for clinical instruction is 602. Very exceptional facilities are thus offered to Students for obtaining a wide and tt,orough acquaintance with all branches of Medical and Surgical work. Resident Appointments.-There are five resident appoint-ments at the Infirmary and four in the Hospital, and theDressers reside in rotation, free of expense. The Maternitystudents also have rooms provided in the institutions.Fees.-Medical Practice : three months, 4 guineas ; six

months, 7 guineas; one year, 12 guineas ; perpetual, 20guineas. Surgical Practice : three months, 4 guineas, sixmonths, 7 guineas; one year, 12 guineas ; perpetual, 20

guineas. Medical and Surgical Practice together in one

payment : six months, 12 guineas; one year, 20 guineas;perpetual, 35 guineas. Dental Surgical Practice: one year,7 guineas; perpetual, 12 guineas. The above fees includeClinical Lectures. Clinical Clerkship : 5 guineas for six months.Dressership: 5 guineas for six months. Museum fee :3 guineas (composition on entrance), or 1 guinea annually.Dispensing Fee : 2 guineas. Students from other schools or

qualified medical men wishing to attend Clinical Practice

for short periods and not requiring certificates for suchattendance may do so for the following fees :-Medicaland Surgical Practice conjointly : one month, 2 guineas; twomonths, 3 guineas ; three months, 4 guineas ; and six months,7 guineas.

LEEDS GENERAL INFIRMARY AND MEDICAL DEPART-MENT OF THE YORKSHIRE COLLEGE.-The Leeds GaneralInfirmary has accommodation for 482 in-patients, medicaJand surgical, including 46 beds at a " semi-convalescenthome" in the country. During the last year 6375 in-

patients and 37,688 out-patients were treated. Clinicalteaching takes place daily in the wards, and Clinical Lec-tares are given in Medicine and Surgery by the Physiciansand Surgeons. There are Medical, Surgical, Ophthalmic,Aural, and Electrical Departments, in each of which specialinstruction is imparted to students A Gynsecological andExtern Obstetric Department, together with Laryngeal andSkin Clinics, are in operation. The Public Dispensary, theHospital for Women and Children, the Fever Hospital, andthe West Riding Lunatic Asylum are other medical insti-tutions which are made use of by the Leeds students. Fiveyears ago the new buildings of the Medical School were

opened by their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess ofYork. Erected on a commanding site, close to the Infirmary,the new School of Medicine contains complete accommodationfor the training of medical students upon the most approvedmodern methods. A very fine dissecting-room, extensivelaboratories for Physiology and Pathology, with the mostrecent improvements in fittings and apparatus, ample lecture-room accommodation, a large Library, and separate Museumsfor Pathology and Anatomy-these are some of the moststriking features of the new buildings. Careful provisionfor the convenience of students, in the shape of a common-room, a refectory, &c., has also been made a featureof the school. UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, LIVERPOOL (VICTORIA UNIVER-SITY) : MEDICAL FACULTY.-New medical buildings are atpresent in course of erection, comprising departments ofAnatomy, Surgery, Anatomical Museum, and Laboratoryand Lecture-room accommodation for the School of DentalSurgery, Materia Medica, Toxicology, &c. These adjointhe Physiological and Pathological Laboratories, whichwere recently built and equipped by the generosity ofthe Rev. S. A. Thompson-Yates at a cost of over £30,000.These laboratories include theatres for physiology and patho-logy, laboratories for Microscopic, Physical, and ChemicalPhysiology, for Morbid Anatomy, Bacteriology, and ChemicalPathology, special rooms for research, &c., private rooms,students’ common room, and lavatories. The ChemicalLaboratories have been extended so as to provide inter aliamore complete accommodation for medical students andthose engaged in laboratory work for diplomas in PublicHealth. The Chair of Hygiene has secured adequate per-manent accommodation in Ashton Hall, an institute adjacentto the College which contains ample class-room and labo-ratory accommodation for study and research. The museumsof Anatomy, Pathology, and Materia Medica are furnishedwith complete provision for the needs of students and haverecently been reorganised and revised. The museum ofHygiene accommodated in Ashton Hall has been recentlyestablished on the lines of the Parkes Museum. It contains

meteorological instruments and numerous models and speci-mens. Under the supervision of the Professor of Hygiene acourse of lectures on Sanitary Science is given during thewinter suitable for candidates for sanitary inspectors’certificates.Royal Infirmary.-The Royal Infirmary, which adjoins the

School, contains 300 beds with 40 special beds for the treat-ment of Diseases of Women. The Lying-in, Eye and Ear,Women’s, Children’s, Dental, and Skin Hospitals are in theimmediate vicinity and their practice is open to the studentsof the Medical Faculty.Fees.-The composition fees are :- £24 15s. for Preliminary

Scientific Classes; E60 for the Medical Classes required forthe Victoria, London, and other University degrees ; and E70for all the classes required for the diplomas of the ConjointBoards. The medical composition fees are payable in twoinstalments at intervals of 12 months. The fee for hospitalattendance at the Royal Infirmary is 40 guineas, also payablein two annual instalments.

Appointments.-Four house surgeons, three house physi-cians, and one house surgeon to the Thornton Wards areappointed for six months after (if necessary) competitiveexamination. Candidates must have a legal qualifica-tion. There are also one resident and one extra casualtyofficer. Clinical clerks for each physician, dressers foreach surgeon, and clerks to the Thornton Wards forDiseases of Women are appointed every three months.Post-mortem clerks are appointed for six weeks ; all studentsare required to perform this duty before the schedule for theFinal Examination is signed.

Major Ronald Ross, F.R S., late I.M.S., is theSuperintendent and Lecturer in Tropical Medicine, and theschool has already done excellent work in attempting toeradicate malaria in certain colonial stations.

MEDICAL DEPARTMENT OF OWENS COLLEGE (VICTORIAUNIVERSITY).-This medical school is located in a largEbuilding, which forms a part of Owens College. It isprovided with large dissecting-rooms, physiological labora.tories, private laboratories, and work-rooms, besides lecturerooms, a museum, and a library. In order to give thEfullest possible opportunities for teaching and investigation in the departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology,and Materia Medica, an extension of the school building)has recently been made. The greater part of the nevbuildings is devoted to the departments of physiologypathology, toxicology, anatomy, and public health. Thephysiological department occupies more than half of thenew buildings, and includes a large lecture theatre, accommodating 350 students, with preparation and diagram room!adjacent to it, and a research laboratory fitted with the

In the public health depart.ment suitable laboratory accommodation is provided for thestudy of sanitary chemistry, physics, and practical bacterio.logy in the departments of chemistry and physics and inthat of pathology. A large room is provided in the newbuildings for a museum of apparatus, models, plans, andother sanitary appliances for the practical instruction of thestudents, together with a special library of works on Statemedicine, hygiene, vital statistics, and sanitary engineering.In addition, a large lecture theatre for general purposes,accommodating 250 students, has been provided, and theexisting accommodation for students is supplemented by theprovision of a larger common room. The more strictly prac.tical departments of medical study are taught partly in theMedical School and partly in the Royal Infirmary, as wellas in a fever hospital, a lunatic asylum, and a convalescenthome. Medical and Surgical Clinical Classes are conductedin the infirmary, and separate instruction is afforded in theelements of Medical and Surgical Physical Diagnosis, inObstetric Medicine, Ophthalmic Surgery, and PathologicalAnatomy by the different members of the staff of the MedicalSchool and Infirmary. Thelectures qualify for the University of Edinburgh andother Universities, the Royal Colleges of Physicians andSargeons of Edinburgh, London and Dublin, the Facultyof Pnysicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, and other Medicaland Surgical and Public Boards.The anatomy rooms and laboratories will open on Tuesday,

In accordance with the statutes of the University of

Edinburgh one-half of the qualifying classes required forgraduation may be attended in this school, in addition tothe class of Practical Materia Medica and the classes ofClinical Medicine and Clinical Surgery. The regulations re-quire that the fee for any class taken for graduation in Edin-burgh i-hull be the same as that for the corresponding class inthe University. In all respects the students aretaught under regulations similar to those at the Universityof Edinburgh and the other Universities of Scotland, andthey receive similar certificates at the close of each session.Moreover, the University and College authorities in Edin-burgh and the governing board of the school call upon eachrecognised lecturer to supply them at the close of eachsession with a statement giving the number of studentsattending the class, the number of lectures or prelectionsdelivered during the session, the class examinations held,and the general mode of conducting the class. Thecourses on special non-qualifying subjects have for the lastquarter of a century formed a marked feature of the school.Indeed, such medical subjects could be studied in Edinburghonly in this school until lately, when the Univetsity of

Edinburgh appointed from the school lecturers on Diseasesof the Eye. Insanity, and Diseases of Children to take
